"How Do You Know" Cost a Whopping $120 Million to Make

"How Do You Know" Cost a Whopping $120 Million to MakeSubmit Comment
THR has learned that the upcoming romantic comedy "How Do You Know" has a budget over $120 million and $50 million of that went to the stars of the film.

Reese Witherspoon got $15 million, Jack Nicholson got $12 million, Owen Wilson got $10 million and Paul Rudd got $3 million. Director James L. Brooks (Spanglish, As Good as It Gets) is earning $10 million himself.

The studio got $20 million back in tax breaks, but that still leaves $50 million for a movie with zero special effects. Apparently the majority of the shooting budget was wasted on Brooks' filming style, which includes working extremely slow, and re-shooting the entire beginning and end of the movie.

Will the studio make its money back? It will be tough, considering "How Do You Know" opens on the same day as "Tron: Legacy," "Gulliver's Travels" and "Yogi Bear."

Just to compare, "The Departed," which featured a huge A-list cast (Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon), A-list director (Martin Scorsese) and won the Oscar for Best Picture, cost $90 million.

With those stars you have to add a few million for condoms, whores, jack daniels, nose candy and more nose candy

Oh and razorblades, tubs and sleeping pills

Must be nice to get paid ahead of time whether your work fails or not

By the way

The Crazy Horse guess is $50-$70 million for this one

Thoughts anyone

Yes this will be a hit as sad as it sounds but not tron

I hope it flops.
Why waste so much money on a movie that literally without the cast will have zero interest? (not that I am interested in any of the cast)

Used to love Reese but now she is ludicrously overrated. Dont know how she won the Oscar.

Hilarious, we've got flicks with amazing special effects (District 9) costing less than half of what this piece of sh*t cost. f*ck Paul Rudd, and romantic comedy's.

Sucks that wahlberg is considered an Alist actor and also got a big check from the departed .Nicholson got the second biggest check wat the f*ck are u gonna do with all that u look like u'll last 5 years tops, bet u dont even get a boner anymore and is taking sh*t roles like deniro and pacino.

It is wat it is in hollywood talented actors get paid sh*t and douchebags get all the money

sh*t. I'm supporting Jack Black, but his new movie has no chance against Tron.

Harrison Ford made $60mil for Air Force One. I don't mind one A-Lister making a ton but really adding to a movie. But with this movie (unless I'm missing something), with it's A-List(ish)... OK expensive actors here... couldn't this movie have turned out just with with a bunch of talented no-names?

I didn't even know this movie was/is being made. Won't see it in a theater, won't rent or buy it. Doubt I'd even watch it on my cable channel.

So Paul Rudd get's second billing and is the least paid..weird.

Not keen on this movie at all.

@Dave --- Terrence Howard was the highest paid in Iron Man. Yeah, pay has little to do it.

@ranger

yep heard about that, I heard he got paid the most because no one had faith in the movie and they were desperate to get someone as Don Cheadle their first choice was unavailable.

What ever happened to Warren Beaty after that movie, did New Line take his life as payment or something..

Ranger- I agree

Sly, Arnie ,Willis,Cruise, Ford even Nicholson for Batman.

These guys got massive pay cheques for various movie roles which also added to the hype of the movie , but they were the main draw of the film back when Name alone would open a movie no matter how good or bad it was, STAR POWER.

Today someone like Reece can $15 mil (And good luck to her BTW) a movie and as you say any actress could do it and for a lot less of the price.

These rom Com only have a limted boxoffice anyway , you would think the producers would want to get the out goings to a minimum wouldn't you.

Keep the out goings....

Working and WP dont mix sometimes..
Trip Maverick writes:

I think they need to start paying these movie stars after the film as made money. Give them half up front and then half after the film has had its Run. 15 million for Reece is crazy. I know she won an oscar but so did Marisa Tomei and where the f*ck is she?
Max Rockatansky Junior writes:

Reese Witherspoon earned more than Nicholson on this ?

Wow, that tells you how f*cked up this stink-com is gonna be.
