"Empire Strikes Back" Director Irvin Kershner Dead at 87

"Empire Strikes Back" Director Irvin Kershner Dead at 87Submit Comment
Irvin Kershner, who directed "Empire Strikes Back," the 1980 sequel to George Lucas' original "Star Wars" film, died Saturday at his Los Angeles home after a 3-year battle with lung cancer. He was 87.

"The world has lost a great director and one of the most genuine people I've had the pleasure of knowing," Lucas said in a statement. "Irvin Kershner was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. I knew him from USC - I attended his lectures and he was on the festival panel that gave the prize to my THX short. I considered him a mentor."

During his four-decade career, Kershner also directed "The Flim-Flam Man" (1967), "Up the Sandbox" (1972), "Eyes of Laura Mars" (1978), "The Return of a Man Called Horse" (1976) and "Never Say Never Again" (1983).

In June, Kershner received a lifetime achievement award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. At the time of his death, he was working on a documentary about his friend, writer Ray Bradbury, and a musical called "Djinn," about the friendship between a Jewish immigrant and an Arab sheik in Palestine before it became Israel.

The man who was better at Star Wars than Lucas himself has died. God speed.

@ Mink: Probably, but no ladies have gone with the wind (or dust shall we say), maybe Courtney Love or Brigitte Nielsen is the missing link to the fate of the 3's.

RIP Mr Kershner, you easily made the best star wars movie of all.

Love, I hope, but not Nielsen. She's still statuesque in my opinion, even if she looks more and more like a white RuPaul these days.

Neither Nielsen or Kershner were on my 2010 deathlist. Not only do my picks never die, but good people kick the bucket instead. Maybe I'll get lucky with the next one (they always go in threes)

Thanks for a the films you directed, 'Empire' was one of the most rarest sequels to ever live up to the original.

RIP.
