Robert Zemeckis Remaking "Wizard of Oz" from Original 1939 Script

Robert Zemeckis Remaking "Wizard of Oz" from Original 1939 ScriptSubmit Comment
Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros is in early talks with Robert Zemeckis to direct a live-action remake of "The Wizard of Oz" with plans to use the original script from the 1939 classic.

The studio owns the screenplay, which was penned by 19 writers - including Bert Lahr who played the Cowardly Lion - because Ted Turner bought it along with the MGM library before Warner Bros bought Turner's empire.

At the same time Disney is developing "The Great and Powerful Oz," which is a "Wizard of Oz" prequel starring Robert Downey Jr as the Wizard and directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man).

Zemeckis is known for such great films as "Back to the Future," "Forrest Gump" and "Cast Away," but his last four projects have all been animated, including "The Polar Express," "Beowulf," "A Christmas Carol" and "Yellow Submarine."

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO ONE, AND I MEAN 'NO ONE', CAN REMAKE WIZARD OF OZ, THATS BLASPHEMY, I CALL BOYCOTT!!!!!!

They can't remake this film. Not this one! Where's the immunity at for such classics?

Let me guess, Queen Latifah and Cedric the Entertainer get starring roles somehow?

NO. NEVER. EVER.

The Wizard of Oz is one of those rare timeless classic that doesn't need to be remade for any reason (other than $ in warners pockets)

You just can't improve on perfection !!

Sad day if this ever happens ...

Hey Robert!! Go ask Gus Van Sant how his remake of "Psycho" went before you say yes to this.

Even sadder is that they are going to cgi Judy Garlands face onto Lohans body

If they can remake this then best believe in no time we will have a Star Wars remake.
JohnZee writes:

Idiotic. First of all some of the last minute directing changes to the "original" script include several highly recognizable "Wizard of Oz" points with audiences world wide.

Second. f*ck you Robert Zemeckis. Why don't you try to do something original bitch? Isn't there an Issac Asimov story you could buy the rights just for the title and then just shoot a bunch of footage of Will Smith making cutesy faces at a roll of toilet paper?

This will go over like a lead balloon. Just like that television remake of Casablanca.

why doesnt someone do a f*cking adaption of the book and not try to top the original. f*ck this noise.
buttabean writes:

I bet it will have that chi overlay stuff like beowulf and a christmas carol had. Would be interesting if they did that I think.
rabid writes:
on November 17th, 2010 at 11:57:29 AM

It would be so much better to use the books instead of the Hollywood script. Hollywood screwed up all the subtleties and metaphors that Frank L. Baum hid in his books. They were about social change and I don't think Zemeckis has enough respect for history to even care.
I'm fine with a new OZ film if they can stick to the books this time and follow it up with the apropriate sequels.
Orias writes:

So Rabid is in favor of another Hollywood remake of a timeless classic...Big surprise there.

Robert Zemeckis is officially dead to me. Nothing he makes is interesting at all now and none of it is original. He is a huge part of the problem with Hollywood right now. Whatever happened to the guy who did Back To The Future?
stevepoots writes:

Of course it's a horrible idea but is anyone actually surprised that it's happening? I mean, how the hell is not remade 3 times yet? They remake movies from the 90's now. This movie is like 80 years old. If it's done right it'll could be cool .. obviously not the same as the movie we've loved since we were 4.
Crazyhorse writes:

Next up will be

Gone with The Wind Remake
rabid writes:
on November 17th, 2010 at 3:59:26 PM

I don't see what's so sacred about the movie. It's not as if The Wizard of Oz movie was an original idea to start with. It was based on a previous black and white movie, which was based on a play, which was based on the books.
Rambo writes:
on November 17th, 2010 at 4:59:18 PM

I'm sure zemeckis will find a way to turn this into animation.
SpookyCupcakes writes:
on November 17th, 2010 at 5:17:34 PM

Well sh*t, while they're at it, why don't they remake:

-A Clockwork Orange
-Citizen Kane
-Shawshank Redemption
-Goodfellas
and
-All three Godfathers

I mean, he might as well, right?

f*ck, hollywood officially has no shame now. It's time for a film revolution.

Well, here's something to lighten us up from this horrible news, here's the trailer for 'Cowdays and Aliens':

rabid writes:

I don't see why people have an automatic revulsion to remakes. There have been plenty of remakes that completely surpass the original.
Inglorious Basterdz. 12 Monkeys. Oceans 11. The Island. Chevy Chase's Invisible Man. the Birdcage. The Blob. Little Shop of Horrors. King Kong. The Getaway. The Fly. Cape Fear. I could probably name 20 others.
Rambo writes:

@masht7

thank you for the link :-)
billofill writes:
on November 18th, 2010 at 9:22:28 AM

Memoirs of an Invisible Man and Inglorious Basterds are not technically remakes. One's based ona book and the other is Tarantino's version of a war genre film.
rabid writes:
on November 18th, 2010 at 10:28:06 AM

There have been at least ten film versions made of H.G. Well's Invisible Man. And just because Tarantino changed (gladly) the storyline doesn't mean it wasn't a reboot of the original film.
