The Wizard of Oz is one of those rare timeless classic that doesn't need to be remade for any reason (other than $ in warners pockets)
You just can't improve on perfection !!
Sad day if this ever happens ...

Idiotic. First of all some of the last minute directing changes to the "original" script include several highly recognizable "Wizard of Oz" points with audiences world wide.
Second. f*ck you Robert Zemeckis. Why don't you try to do something original bitch? Isn't there an Issac Asimov story you could buy the rights just for the title and then just shoot a bunch of footage of Will Smith making cutesy faces at a roll of toilet paper?
This will go over like a lead balloon. Just like that television remake of Casablanca.

It would be so much better to use the books instead of the Hollywood script. Hollywood screwed up all the subtleties and metaphors that Frank L. Baum hid in his books. They were about social change and I don't think Zemeckis has enough respect for history to even care.
I'm fine with a new OZ film if they can stick to the books this time and follow it up with the apropriate sequels.

Robert Zemeckis is officially dead to me. Nothing he makes is interesting at all now and none of it is original. He is a huge part of the problem with Hollywood right now. Whatever happened to the guy who did Back To The Future?

Of course it's a horrible idea but is anyone actually surprised that it's happening? I mean, how the hell is not remade 3 times yet? They remake movies from the 90's now. This movie is like 80 years old. If it's done right it'll could be cool .. obviously not the same as the movie we've loved since we were 4.

I don't see what's so sacred about the movie. It's not as if The Wizard of Oz movie was an original idea to start with. It was based on a previous black and white movie, which was based on a play, which was based on the books.

-A Clockwork Orange
-Citizen Kane
-Shawshank Redemption
-Goodfellas
and
-All three Godfathers
I mean, he might as well, right?
f*ck, hollywood officially has no shame now. It's time for a film revolution.

I don't see why people have an automatic revulsion to remakes. There have been plenty of remakes that completely surpass the original.
Inglorious Basterdz. 12 Monkeys. Oceans 11. The Island. Chevy Chase's Invisible Man. the Birdcage. The Blob. Little Shop of Horrors. King Kong. The Getaway. The Fly. Cape Fear. I could probably name 20 others.

Memoirs of an Invisible Man and Inglorious Basterds are not technically remakes. One's based ona book and the other is Tarantino's version of a war genre film.

rabid writes: on November 18th, 2010 at 10:28:06 AM
There have been at least ten film versions made of H.G. Well's Invisible Man. And just because Tarantino changed (gladly) the storyline doesn't mean it wasn't a reboot of the original film.
