Spielberg, Vaughn and Boyle Considered for "Oldboy" Remake

Spielberg, Vaughn and Boyle Considered for "Oldboy" RemakeSubmit Comment
About a year ago, news broke that Steven Spielberg was looking to direct a remake of Chan-Wook Park's "Oldboy" which had Will Smith attached to star. But due to rights issues, the project fell apart.

Now, according to Pajiba, writer Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) has turned in a script to Mandate Pictures. The studio loves it and is once again pushing forward with the remake. The plan is to re-engage Spielberg, but that may be difficult to do since the helmer is busy with his own projects. If he passes, the studio will then go to Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass). If Vaughn passes, then Mandate will try to get Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire).

All three helmers are incredibly busy, so it's likely that the remake won't go into production before 2012. Stay tuned.

Plot: With no clue how he came to be imprisoned, drugged and tortured for 15 years and no one to hold accountable for his suffering a desperate businessman seeks revenge on his captors, relying on assistance from a friendly waitress. Korean director Chan Wook Park a former philosophy student and Hitchcock devotee uses his influences to create a mesmerizing psychological drama with a resolution that will leave you speechless.

What's old is new again, I see. Sounds like Hollywood never passes up a chance to ruin a cult classic.

"With no clue how he came to be imprisoned, drugged and tortured for 15 years" Is this a movie about Che getting locked in daddy's basement?

go with Boyle, he's not afraid to use non traditional storylines like incest

Though Vaughn had a 12 year old pretty much yelling whatever was scripted so maybe it could work.. plus the violence is about equally over the top as O.B

... Go with Boyle or Vaughn

@Ranger-Yea no sh*t lol. Wonder if the movie will be made Saw style. He has to cut his lil d*ck off to get out. Either cut it off or Jake-Awesomeless and Lohan tag team him.

Just don't ruin it. Which will probably happen. Why the hell is everybody running out of original ideas?

This movie was already remade, it's called Zinda, it sucked sh*t.
Speilberg can blow it out his ass if he thinks he can remake this in an american society. it wouldn;t work.
It does in those countries :P

think about it....

The reason they want to remake this is because they loved the original? If that's case, why ruining something you love? They can't possible remake Oldboy and make it justice at the same time. It can't be done.

Three phenomenal directors but I think the only one who could really do it and not completely Hollywood-ize it and f*ck it up massively (because it will be f*cked up and not as good as Park's original) is Matthew Vaughn. I didnt like Layer Cake or Stardust, but after Kick Ass I can see the guy breaking all kinds of conventions (which Oldboy does) and making it f*cking awesome. Layer Cake had grit just didnt play out well and Oldboy needs so much grit. Boyle would probably do an honorable job but it doesnt seem like his kind of project. Spielberg, god love him, but he is probably the last person I would ask for this. He's better with period pieces and historical/biopics.
