Zac Efron in Talks for "Akira" Remake

Zac Efron in Talks for "Akira" RemakeSubmit Comment
Back in February, it was reported that the Hughes brothers (The Book of Eli) were in talks with Warner Bros to direct a live-action remake of the cult favorite "Akira," from a script by "Iron Man" writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

Now comes word from Production Weekly that Albert Torres (Henry Poole Is Here) is writing a new screenplay and Zac Efron (17 Again, High School Musical) is in talks to star. Here is the plot description of the new movie:

Neo-Tokyo has risen from the ashes of World War III to become a dark and dangerous megalopolis infested with gangs and terrorists. The government seethes with corruption and only maintains a token control over the powerful military that prevents total chaos and hides the secrets of the past.

Childhood friends Tetsuo and Kaneda plunge into Neo-Tokyo's darkest secret when their motorcycle gang encounters a military operation to retrieve an escaped experimental subject. Tetsuo, captured by the military, is subjected to experiments that make him a powerful psychic, but, unfortunately for Neo-Tokyo, Tetsuo's powers rage out of control and he lashes out at the world that has oppressed him! Nothing can stop the destructive forces that Tetsuo wields except possibly the last boy to destroy Tokyo.

@Max Rockatansky Junior

Thank you for mentioning this first (under HB headline). Worst full-assault raping to anime manga since they desecrated Speed Racer.

Here's a wild idea, why not have Asian characters be portrayed by.......Asians?

NO no no not again I thought this was dead, this does not need to be turned into sh*t... for the love of god leave this alone. I will not watch a live action like I have not watched speed racer or dragon ball

@SACDaddy

Of course, that would make sense ... but this is Hollyweird.

Look at what they did with Dragonball Z & StreetFighter ....

AKIRA= Awesome the original that is

Please don't f*ck this up by putting high profile actors in it. Just let the story and film speak for it self without trying to drive up ticket sales with douchettes like Efron

Pull a Sucker punch and get know actors and actresses that can carry the movie and send it into the stratosphere with special effects and story.

leonardo dicaprio (who owns the rights) needs to step in and make sure this is done right. i don't think efron is the right choice

No way. Live version will never match how epic the anime film is. Specially considering how Otomo lost control of his own script.

If screewriters try to rearrange the end, this will suck like never has evever sucked before.

zac efron is an hero to everyone, and he doesn't afraid of anything
minkowski writes:

Baaaaad f*cking idea. Someone just rape him with a broomstick coated in blood from a San Fran vampire orgy, please.

The original film was FINE. Perfect. A f*cking anime classic. Leave it the f*ck alone. Hollywood knows it cannot do these types of films correctly, so instead of ruining them, just let be.

@sacdaddy

Because asian actors can't act.

Don't you dare argue haha

As much as I think this is a f*ckING TERRIBLE idea, that doesn't have anything to do with Zac Effron. The guy is completely tied to his lame High School Musical image but that isn't necessarily his fault, apparently he is not bad in Me and Orson Welles....

Obviously I hate his face

Instead the problem lies with hiring sh*tty directors and sh*tty writers. If this had to be done I would want something like Chris and Jonathan Nolan writing and Chris Nolan directing or someone demonstrably intelligent

but instead...

Some things were meant yo be expressed only in their natural media, and not otherwise. Turning Akira into a live-action is like rendering Van Gogh's Starry Night into Pixar's style of 3D.

When you change media contained from one format to another, you have to inevitably alter and edit the original media to fit the new container.

Taking Akira out of cel-anime, and into live action means inescapably destroying much of what defined the original film.

On the other hand, if they wanted to remake the film using the mixed style of Appleseed 2004, then that would work for me, and I think a lot less would be lost, considering the natural transition from cel-drawn to 3d-cel shading available. In others, same movie, better visuals.

Any other idea would just suck.

One thing I do admire about Zac, is that he seems to be staying clear of any scandal (unless something has happened I didn't hear about), unlike others in his age group in the entertainment industry. Bust your ass for 5 years min. and you can be set for life.
