"Casino Jack" Director George Hickenlooper Dead at 47

"Casino Jack" Director George Hickenlooper Dead at 47Submit Comment
According to the Denver Post, director George Hickenlooper was found dead this morning in Denver. He appears to have died from natural causes and was 47 years old.

The filmmaker was in Denver for the Starz Denver Film Festival, where he was planning to attend a screening of his "Casino Jack" movie (starring Kevin Spacey), which was just picked up for distribution by ATO Pictures. His attempt to sell the film at the Toronto Film Festival was recently documented in Morgan Spurlock's "Committed."

Hickenlooper is also known for "Hearts of Darkness," a 1992 documentary that chronicles Francis Ford Coppola's troubles during the making of "Apocalypse Now."

Hickenlooper's cousin, John Hickenlooper, who is the mayor of Denver, issued the following statement: "Shock and sadness do not begin to describe our emotions. We are devastated. George had immense creative talents and cinematic gifts, but he was so much more than that to us and all his family. His passion for life, zeal for people and unquenchable curiosity enriched everyone who had the fortune to know him. We will miss his sense of humor, his warm character and the avid encouragement he gave anyone around him."

Hearts of Darkness was an intriguing perspective and is still socially relevant in today's climate.

RIP

Why is it when I see the late George Hickenlooper (rest in peace, by the way), I envision Brian Posehn ?

@otis

What's even more impressive is that Coppola spent all the money he made from The Godfather (& The Godfather, Pt. 2) to make Apocolypse Now, risking financial ruin ...

and that the whole last part of Col. Kurtz speech and ending of the movie was improvised.

" The horror ... the horror ... "

* Additional Note : Martin Sheen injured himself on the full length mirror in the room scene with the oscilating fan.

I really love that Apocolypse Now scene they parody in Hot Shots : Part Deux!

" I really loved you in Wall Street! "

Dude dies in the one city his brother is mayor of; it's either Irony or Conspiracy.

'Natural causes' means a death caused by an internal biological failure: heart defect, high-blood pressure or disease, anything other than murder, suicide or drugs/alcohol.

And RIP, sure, like he, or anyone else, has a choice...

Also anything other than an accidental death, like playing chicken with a train.

Even Jesus Christ didn't get a better eulogy. The only praise missing was for Hickenlooper's uncanny, but rarely used, ability to raise the f*cking dead.

In related news, somebody somewhere died doing something; consequently, he was immediately eulogized as savior of the world.

@minkowski

OBVIOUSLY not Mel Gibson ....

his eulogy would include the words 'BLOW ME' somewhere ...

With a last name like Hickenlooper, it's like Duckworth or Snodgrass. I'm bloody surpised he hasn't bitten down on the barrel of a shotgun and painted his walls in brain grey and crimson blood.
