Video: Eric Stoltz as Original Marty McFly in "Back to the Future"Submit Comment
Even though everyone knows the "Back to the Future" trilogy, some of you may not be aware that Michael J Fox was a replacement for Eric Stoltz, who was originally cast as Marty McFly.

Director Robert Zemeckis was already five weeks into shooting with Stoltz when he decided to make a drastic decision to replace the actor with someone with better comedic timing. He convinced the studio to cast Michael J. Fox and to re-shoot five weeks of work.

Footage of Stoltz as McFly is on the "Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy" Blu-ray, which is set to hit stores on October 26th. It is also right below.

If I was Eric Stoltz, I woulda showed up on the set in my "Mask" makeup with the "life preserver" on. How's that for comedic timing, Zemeckis?

if Eric Stoltz was still marty mcfly would michael j fox be the drug dealer in pulp fiction

Maybe he would've ended up as the pedophile father in "The Butterfly Effect"?

Wow... that's so f*cking weird seeing someone else in that role...

Gee, way to tell us trivia older than Che's mom's p*ssy. Next you'll be talling me Gene Hackman auditioned for Mr. Brady from the television show, Kurt Russell auditioned for Han Solo and RuPaul is actually a guy .... (wait for it) .... ss is Che's mom.

@eVilKev2

Wait. Ashton Kutcher's character got molested as a child ? .... Was his father Che's dad or a priest ?

I can see how playing Marty McFly would've brought Eric fame, money, glamour, popularity ...

and epileptic shakes that make him look like Paul Greengrass is directing his ads.

Why couldn't Michael take one horse lesson ?

He'd be riding around by breathing in a tube by now and shaking uncontrollably would be the LEAST of his problems.

Another useless WP thread about another washed up Ginger actor in the 80s and 90s Along with the Carrie Fisher Article. His last movie in the theater was with Ashton Kutcher HAAAA poor guys struggling to pay the bills and is making TV appereances He was good in The Prophecy,Pulp Fiction,2 days in the Valley and Killing Zoe

That's just a poor job on the casting director. The screen tests alone should have given everyone in the production any indication that Stoltz had no comedic timing. I mean Jesus! 5 weeks in?
That's knocked down my respect for Zemeckis a cinch, because although he is not the one directly responsible for the movie not looking right, he couldn't get any comedic timing out of his actor. Comedic timing is only partially innate. The rest has to come out with the director's vision. 5 weeks in and he's going 'I can't put my finger on it.'

It's called poor visionary directing, Zemeckis!

Wow I wonder what would have happened if Stoltz hadnt been recast. How different the franchise (or single movie) would have turned out. Hope there's some more footage of Stoltz's preliminaries maybe with some dialogue to show that he actually wasn't right for the part. He does look very different, the "life preserver" is missing for starters.

poor Stoltz, but Zemeckis made a good decision

maybe he wasn't funny because they had him dressed like a f*ckin emo-goth kid instead of being dressed as marty mcfly. also, no footage with him actually delivering any lines?

Shame really, but I think they made the right choice, reckon Eric Stoltz is a better dramatic actor.

That's some f*cked up sh*t right there. Child slaves and Ford's f*cked up back in Temple Of doom. Landis's decimation of Vic Morrow and the 2 kids in Twilight Zone. Hiding from Stoltz for a MONTH that you think he sucks.

Damn. Spielberg was a party to some f*ckED UP sh*t in the '80s man.
Rambo writes:

where can we seen the entire footage of stoltz?you can call it 'back to the future-the stoltz cut'!
WV-Films writes:

It's ironic that a movie dealing with time travel drastically altered Stoltz career for the future.
Bunny X writes:

Insane. But watching Stoltz in the role, it looks like a completely different movie. Looks like a horror film to be honest. I guess that's what Zemeckis saw.
I love / hate the whole "originally cast in the role" story. I love it because it's wierd seeing or thinking about someone else in iconic roles. I hate it because hell, there's nothing that can be done about it now so move on.
Dre-EL writes:

If the movie was made with Stoltz it would have bombed, that means no BTF2 or 3,and more seasons of family ties.
