Stephen King Voted Favorite Author in the US

Posted: October 9th, 2010 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Stephen King Voted Favorite Author in the USSubmit Comment
A poll by Harris Interactive surveyed American adults ages 18 and over to name their favorite author. A top ten list was compiled, and Stephen King ended up on top.

The big surprise is that JK Rowling and JRR Tolkien ended up in 9th and 10th places, despite the fact that their books and movies (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings) are some of the most popular in the US.

The one author who didn't make the list is Stephenie Meyer, the author of "Twilight" books which have also became a huge hit in the US. Check out the full list below.

1. Stephen King

2. James Patterson

3. John Grisham

4. Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb

5. Tom Clancy

6. Dean Koontz

7. Danielle Steel

8. Dan Brown

9. J.K. Rowling/J.R.R. Tolkien

God I really wish King's Cell would get turned into a movie... it would be so badass!

Who are we kidding? Americans don't read. Too much sh*t on the Internet and tv. Not enough time or interest in books.

Surprised Richard Bachman didn't make the list!

@Ted - couldn't agree more! Definitely his best work in recent years. It would be the perfect time for it now too

lol dan brown is one of the most overrated authors alive, all his books a mediocre at best

To be fair, Stephen has had a running start to J K Rowling, Stephenie Meyer and Dan Brown. He also puts a lot of dark humour in his novels (Thinner; The Dark Half; Needful Things certainly come to mind) and he's a smart writer. He found his niche (Horror based in Maine) and has formulated himself to be almost a William Shakespeare in American horror. Most of his stories have already been adapted to the big screen and television (The Stand was one of the most highly watched mini-series) and he writes not only a column in ... Entertainment Weekly, I think .... but also wrote a very entertaining and enlightening book on the process of writing itself. The guy can knock the books out and his son is showing signs of progress as well.

I'm kind of surprised Elmore Leonard didn't make the list. Personally, I've always been a fan of King's work, but Jim Butcher and Stephen Hunter are my real guilty pleasures. Butcher's Dresden series is pure entertainment, and Hunter's 47th Samurai (and a few other books) should have been converted film a long time ago.

JohnZee writes:

No surprise with King making the #1 spot. And most of the others deserve their places. Well except for Dan Brown. The only people that think that Dan Brown is a good writer are the ones that like to purchase popular books but never actually read them.

At best he is a mediocre writer, if you can even call him a writer. He is far more talented in coming up with marketable sound bite ideas than he is a decent writer.

But honestly if he doesn't have access to several previously published books of detailed research on a particular subject he usually comes off as a complete dumbass.

And at least the one thing you can say about Tom Clancy is that he is a thorough researcher on his own, and at least gets his facts right...

Good. Some polls can reflect the truth about what is literature and what is not, and it's great that US readers didn't vote for Stephenie Meyer. She's just not an author for literature. By the way, @Ted Mosby, Eli Roth revealed before that he has some plans for King's "Cell" novel to be adapted as a movie.

@SACDaddy

Yeah, good question .... Leonard is a really good plot and character creator.

james patterson in second... really? why is he so popular? his books are poorly written and derivitive at best.

oh yeah.. it's cause he writes like ten every month ;)
proff that, like food and tv and movies, people will consume whatever sh*t is in front of them.

but glad to see stepho at the top.

and glad stephani meyer didn't make the list....

I am the Lorax! I speak for the trees,
Which you seem to be chopping as fast as you please.

But I also speak for the brown Barbaloots, Who frolicked and played in their Barbaloot suits, Happily eating Truffula fruits.

Now, since you've chopped the trees to the ground. There's not enough Truffula fruit to go 'round!

(Beats the sh*t our of Stephanie Meyer and Dan Brown if you ask me.)

Scott Baiowulf writes:

@ JohnZee

Dr. Seuss puts stephanie meyers to shame. It really is sickening how popular that no talent hack of a writer has become off of twilight.

Stephanie meyers is sooooo bad, she makes me question the 1st amendment.
