"The Great Gatsby" May Be Baz Luhrmann's Next Movie

"The Great Gatsby" May Be Baz LuhrmannSubmit Comment
MTV News caught up with director Baz Luhrmann (Australia, Moulin Rouge) to find out what he's working on next. Luhrmann replied that he's about to choose between two projects.

"One is a musical and one is a period work, both based in New York City, and I'm about to make that decision," he explained. "I've got the script for both of them and I'm making that decision in four to six weeks, no longer than six weeks."

Luhrmann added that one of the projects is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" and it's not the musical one. "I've been working on that quite a lot," he said.

It was previously rumored that Leonardo Dicaprio may star in "The Great Gatsby" since he and Luhrmann previously worked on "Rome and Juliet," but the director refused to comment on who he wants in the lead.

Update: ProductionWeekly has learned that Dicaprio is in talks to play Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire to play Nick Carraway and Amanda Seyfried to play Daisy Buchanan.

Pass.

Didn't watch the Redford version, probably won't watch the Dicaprio one either.

@Max

It really is a good story and I think Leo would be awesome as gatsby.

This is one that I would like to see made to give it an updated period peice feel.

PLEASE HOLLYWOOD do not give this guy any more money! After the travesty that was 'Australia' (I was embarrassed as an Australian to have my country associated with that steaming pile'o) nobody needs to see anything new from this man. Get this guy doing Spy Kids films - he loves the cheese and it'll free up Rodriguez to do better stuff!
