Studios Respond to Unions' "The Hobbit" Boycott

Posted: September 28th, 2010 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Studios Respond to UnionsSubmit Comment
Australian union MEAA was recently joined by other major acting unions (including Screen Actors Guild) to boycott "The Hobbit" films due to claims that producers are offering non-union agreements with no guaranteed minimum payments or conditions.

Peter Jackson responded by saying that MEAA's motives are about power and money, that he takes care of his crew, and that "a very profit-sharing pool for the non-Union actors on 'The Hobbit.'" Jackson went on to say that such unpleasant circumstances will likely force the films to be moved to Eastern Europe, which will result in New Zealand loosing hundreds of million of dollars.

Now New Line, Warner Bros and MGM ("The Hobbit" studios) have also responded, stating that they have a great relationships with the unions but also feel that MEAA is pursuing this in order to gain power by representing actors in New Zealand.

The statement said: "The fact remains that there cannot be any collective bargaining with MEAA on this New Zealand production, for to do so would expose the production to liability and sanctions under New Zealand law. This legal prohibition has been explained to MEAA. We are disappointed that MEAA has nonetheless continued to pursue this course of action."

"Motion picture production requires the certainty that a production can reasonably proceed without disruption and it is our general policy to avoid filming in locations where there is potential for work force uncertainty or other forms of instability. As such, we are exploring all alternative options in order to protect our business interests."

I'm sure the Kiwi's will really appreciate all the work that the MEAA is driving out of the South Pacific. Add another 50 million to the budget to digitally recreate NZ in east Europe.

Hehe, unions are an important factor inn all work societies. Without unions working people have no power, and are subjects for minimal influens and other elementary rights. Inn Norway we have a strong union(s), and we have 5 weeks vacation, cant get fired before 3 mnd notification ect ect. People we don't like unions have no idea what the hell they are talking about.

@swoooop Unions don't work for their workers anymore, they work for the NWO.

Unions are good except that many times, the leaders of the unions abuse their power. Many times, the "official" stances of the unions don't always represent the beliefs of the majority of the union.

Just kill this project already and have Hollywood ban any production company from filming in NZ. With the loss of revenue, they will come begging H-wood to come back, sh*t they might even work for half of what they use to get paid.

We've heard from the Union, we've heard from Pete Jackson and now the studios ....

@Kurskij: Yeah!

I'm up for that.

@swoooop: Maybe in Norway works in that way, but in Mexico the Unions are like a virus. The destroy EVERYTHING...
