Peter Jackson Responds to Unions Boycotting "The Hobbit"

Peter Jackson Responds to Unions Boycotting "The Hobbit"Submit Comment
Australia's MEAA, with the support of US and UK acting unions (including SAG), have decided to boycott "The Hobbit" prequels claiming that producers are offering non-union agreements with no guaranteed minimum payments or conditions. Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett are said to be supporting the boycott.

Peter Jackson has now responded to the claims in an angry letter, calling MEAA an "Australian bully boy" and stating that its agenda is "based on money and power" which will hurt New Zealand.

"My personal opinion is that this is a grab for power," Jackson explained. "It does not represent a problem that needs a solution. There will always be differing opinions when it comes down to work and conditions, but I have always attempted to treat my actors and crew with fairness and respect. We have created a very favorable profit-sharing pool for the non-Union actors on 'The Hobbit.'"

He continued: "I also feel a growing anger at the way this tiny minority (MEAA) is endangering a project that hundreds of people have worked on over the last two years, and the thousands about to be employed for the next four years. The hundreds of millions of Warner Brothers dollars that is about to be spent in [New Zealand] economy."

"Why is this endangered? Because the demands of MEAA cannot be agreed to, or even considered - by law - and therefore the only options that remain involve closing 'The Hobbit' down, or more likely shifting the production to Europe. It could so easily happen. I've been told that Disney are no longer bringing movies to Australia because of their frustration with the MEAA."

Jackson added that the financial impact of moving or shutting down production would cause other studios to steer clear of New Zealand. "Seriously, if 'The Hobbit' goes east - Eastern Europe in fact - look forward to a long, dry, big-budget movie drought in this country," he warned.

For the love of - STFU! Why isnt it ever enough? Just like Peter is saying, they'll employ thousands of people, put money into New Zealand and the actors will earn more than enough (not to speak about a careerboost) for them to live the rest of their lives wealthy.

I feel like taking a shoppingcart from Dead Rising and running the unions over. Or the sledge hammer. Which ever comes to mind first.

Well, that's it...Finito! I've said it before and I will say it again: Peter, For crying out loud, Kill this project already. It's time to move on.

Greedy bastards. Just to secure that they earn a couple of extra dollars they are willing to jeopardize a project which would create tons of jobs for people that don't earn the same amount of money.

And that's why unions don't need to exist anymore. They destroyed the best schools in the US, the bankrupted the big 3, and they're trying to shut down the Hobbit. And then they have the nerve to point and shout "GREED".

But Hobbits only make half what normal people make.

A bad quasi beginning isn't enough to see this movie will fail? There are alot of examples. He should follow Del Toro, it's time to abandon the ship, let those greedy d*cks drown with it.

The Left destroyed the global economy. And now they've destroyed the Hobbit. A profit-sharing pool means less union dues cause it's easier to hide back end money. That's less power for the union.

The Oompa-Loompa union strikes again! This time they killed the hobbits!

Ah well. It was a nice dream while it lasted. Now Ian McKellan and cast can move on to other projects. This is now dead.
