Concept Art: Paul Greengrass' Cancelled "Watchmen" Movie

Concept Art: Paul GreengrassSubmit Comment
Before Zack Snyder made "Watchmen," it was Paul Greengrass working to develop the graphic novel into a feature film. This was right after he directed "The Bourne Supremacy."

Now, production designer Dominic Watkins has revealed a few concept art pieces that were put together for the film. "This production book was page-by-page, set-to-set what we were going to be shooting," he told CBR. "We were that close to shooting."

Eventually Paramount Pictures shut down development and sent the entire thing to Warner Bros with Greengrass still attached. But the director then decided to do "United 93" and "Bourne Ultimatum," instead of "Watchmen."

So how are Greengrass' and Snyder's versions different?

"At that time, I thought it was very poignant because it was written under the backdrop of Reaganism and all that in America and the Cold War being in full effect," explained Watkins. "I thought that the political climate from Bush was escalated to a similar point, with us on the brink of something quite catastrophic, so I thought making a version of 'Watchmen' that was more contemporary and applying it to the decade of the '00s was a good idea and was a lot more relevant than it turned out to be."

He added: "I think the difference between Zack Snyder's 'Watchmen' and ours would've been night and day. He pretty much made the movie page-to-page from the graphic novel. Ours was definitely going to be based on the graphic novel and all the characters would've been drawn on that, but we'd have updated it somewhat."

Sounds like his version would have been some gay, liberal crap-fest. I am glad Snyder made the CORRECT version instead of this creat Graphic Novel being butchered by that moron.

Thank god he didnt make his version...Snyder adapted it perfectly, some might have thought it was boring (because they were expecting an action movie) but I think it was amazing.

I like Greengrass, but I think Zach Snyders version is as good and visually compelling as a subject matter as lame as Watchmen is ever going to get! The only thing that kept that film from being a COMPLETE bomb is the fact that Snyder directed.
The subject matter is just f*ckin stupid. The characters are completely unlikeable, their powers are a joke, and the story is boring......Not a good combination.

They should publish everything, so that all of the work, won't come in vain.

I love Zack Snyders |Watchmen| but it still deserves to be realesed.

Of course he's a got a shaky camera. He's filming with the camera in one hand and jacking himself off with the other.

@TH3D4RKKN1GH7

Oh yeah because the fans were all clamoring for a Watchmen movie that they would have barely recognized from the graphic novel.

A Watchmen movie that no only Alan Moore wouldn't have recognized, but also wouldn't have recognized. A Watchmen movie that only paid the most basic of lip service to the original graphic novel, yet would probably also have the majority of the same problems that Snyder's version had.

Or maybe not, if Greengrass was completely changing the setting so he could go on some unneeded tirade against the Bush administration, then it is possible that he would have severely simplified the storyline, and converted the rich history of each of the characters into something basic and pedestrian.

Wow the sketches show a different interpretation, big freaking deal, show me tangible proof that his version of the Watchmen movie would have been better.

...Especially since Greengrass' own "proof" that he is pointing out is that it would be his version of "Watchmen"...

...As not only did he think his "version" was better than the original graphic novel, but he was willing to sidestep the possibility of making a great Watchmen movie in favor of making some lame soapbox political point...

...You know like he did with that Matt Damon movie "The Green Zone".

Yeah that worked out great didn't it?

@SquirrelFlyer- with you on that one, I liked the movie, I liked the fact that not much really happens but at the same time there is stuff happening.

Watchmen doesn't need "updating". Then again, Watchmen didn't need a f*cking movie to begin with.
