Plays and Musicals Coming to Movie Theaters

Plays and Musicals Coming to Movie TheatersSubmit Comment
In the last several years, movie-goers have been giving the option to watch more than movies, but concerts and even sporting events. And now it seems that stage theater may be coming to a big-screen near you.

There are many great musicals and plays out there, but most of the time you have to in big cities to see them. Plus, many great productions appear for a very limited time and then disappear forever. Over the weekend, however, a company called Hibrow, has been recording staged productions at the Traverse theater. And thank to multiple cameras, much is being recorded from every angle.

The goal is to get these performances into movie theaters and then on home video, where audiences can select their own camera angles and witness what's going on backstage. This means that people at home can choose what they want to focus on, just like they would at a live show.

Many are already wondering whether people would pay for this and whether exhibitors would even agree to participate. And then there's the whole issue of compensation to the creative team for theatrical ticket prices, DVD sales, etc.

Question: Would you pay to see a recorded stage performance at your local movie theater?

Why do that when you can just go see the real thing? Culture in this country is getting beat to death with heavy bats and blunt items.

Sounds interesting. It could be cool if you are unable to get to an actual theater to see a show.

Just one more push to obsolete theater from the public arena. Obsolete, you say? But it's bringing live theater to the screen?

That's the point...the point of live theater is that there is some sort of "magical" connection between audience and performers. That is eliminated by recording a singular show. If you want to view the show from every angle, become an actor, or get seats in 3 separate locations in the theater to view the show. That way, the show will always be different, not by viewing from different filmed angles. What if I want to look up or to the side in the auditorium the show is being performed in?

These producers will do anything they can to capitalize on theater even if it pillages the art to the ground.

The correct answer is "no" theatre is meant to be seen live, in a actual theatre...its not written or designed to be one dimensional....if you do this you lose the special feel for what real theatre is. Leave plays alone, if you want to see them go to a theatre...not a movie theatre!

O sh*t James Cameron just got an idea for an Avatar Special Musical Edition, just to suck more money out of our pockets.

absolutely f*cking not. the whole reason plays are great is seeing the actors and hearing their voices not light on a flat screen with a sound system. It's also nice to see what can be created for sets with the restrictions live theatre has. If it's being recorded why not give me drive angry instead.

No. Unless it's one of those live sex shows they have in the red light district, then maybe.

@BDeck - you jump to conclusions. I love the theater... in an actual stage theater. Movie theaters should be reserved for movies (just my opinion). When I want to go see a play I do so... at a stage theater.

What makes this production company even think I want to watch their version of 'Chicago' anyway?

This is like inter-breeding (of which I'm not opposed if the sister or cousin in question is HAWT!). But the 2 have be separate entities for over a century. I'm not against progressive thinking (see: 'pro' inter-breeding above), but I think they have remained separate for a reason.
