Will "Battleship" Earn Back Its $200 Million Budget?

Will "Battleship" Earn Back Its $200 Million Budget?Submit Comment
Peter Berg's "Battleship" movie, based on the popular board game, is getting ready to begin filming in Hawaii in 15 days. But with a $200 million budget (not including marketing) and no major movie stars (Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna), will this investment work out for Universal Pictures?

"Transformers" faced similar risks and the franchise has now turned into a trilogy, with the last two installments grossing over $1.5 billion together. "Battleship," on the other hand, has no back-story and revolves around naval battles, which is less marketable than giant robots.

But Universal seems confidant. "You're talking about a property that worldwide has more awareness than most, if not all, of Hasbro properties that preceded it," said chairman Adam Fogelson. "Worldwide, more people have played Battleship than played with Transformers."

At one point there was a rumor that Universal was going to shut down the project, but Fogelson denies that the film was ever in jeopardy.

Question: Are you as interested in seeing "Battleship" as you were in seeing "Transformers"?

why r they spending so much on this movie? 200 million dollars is way too much money for this franchise. i hope this budget is just a rumor because that is just ridiculous.

Not in ticket sales, but possible in movie-game/toy tie-ins.

Wtf, This movie won't even make $200,000. But Double Penetration will give it a 9/10.

I DEMAND to know who Universal's weed supplier is because HOLY f*ck GODS that has to be some good sh*t! Take one hit of that stuff and next thing you know you wake up in small town in the middle of India with child and wife who happens to be an giraffe....

Well either that happens who you actually somehow convince yourself that "Battleship" is going to make $200million.
rabid writes:

Universal also sunk a sh*t ton of money into Scott Pilgrim ads and it's looking like it's going to come in FOURTH this weekend. Does it deserve to? Naw, but Universal had no business throwing 60-90 million at it. This has financial failure written all over it.
SaulSilver writes:

Why do we ask questions that we already know the answer to? Not even the Eric Northman/Tim Riggins combo can save such a sh*tty idea.

Short answer: No.

This movie is the dumbest idea I've heard of in a long time. What's next... and animated Terminator?! ... oh, wait!
Johnnyb writes:

It depends how works it out. Is obvious with the alien plot in the game and not knowing actor in this one, this can sunk faster than Titanic, but just wait and see the outcome!!!!!
GIST writes:

@qwertyuiop22ful

That will be the REALITY SPOILER if you ask me. Instead of a "Miss", it will definitely be a "Hit" on the box office Battleship when it gets released. And boy, will this sh*t it sink fast! Or stay buoyant like sh*t, but will still stink.

Oh, you ignorant sh*thead. "Rock, paper and scissor" has more built in awareness than Transformers, but that doesn't mean it should be made into a 200-million dollar movie.

Question: Are you as interested in seeing "Battleship" as you were in seeing "Transformers"?

NO, but I am interested in the pitch man that secured the $200mill budget for this film. The guy must be the best salesman in the world! Billy Mays and Vince the Sham Wow guy are lucky this shark didn't decide to get into slinging worthless products on tv, they wouldn't stand a chance!
ZenShark writes:

how did this ever manage to get that kind of money? when there are movies with actual stories that struggle to get one tenth of that. hollywood makes no sense...
j-man writes:

they'll prob have 'from the studio that brought you tranformers' in the trailer, not saying it'll make people not wanna go see it, but looked wa happened the golden compass when they had ' from the studio that brought you LOTR' in the trailer, plus that film sucked donkey balls
rabid writes:

ZenShark, between Universal Studios and Hasbro, there's a lot of money to spread around. Think of how much money is spent on an average commercial. Now imagine a 2 hour toy commercial.
These people must be pretty egotistical to assume they can turn board games into hit movies.
