Edgar Wright Turned Down "Green Hornet," "Drag Me To Hell" and More

Edgar Wright Turned Down "Green Hornet," "Drag Me To Hell" and MoreSubmit Comment
The new issue of Empire magazine looks into the upcoming "Scott Pilgrim vs The World" movie and its director Edgar Wright. In an interview, Wright revealed some of the projects he was offered after "Shaun of the Dead."

Sam Raimi approached him to direct "Drag Me To Hell," which Wright seriously considered. "[But] it was so obviously a Sam Raimi film. I told him as a fan I wanted to see him do it," he explained.

And it wasn't the only horror film that he was approached about. Wright said that he was given the chance to remake "The Crazies." He didn't feel it was the right project for him, so Breck Eisner stepped in.

There was also "The Green Hornet," starring Seth Rogen as the title character. It's not clear if Wright was the first choice or whether he was approached after Stephen Chow left.

Wright also met with Tom Cruise about "Mission: Impossible 4," but quickly turned down the chance to direct the film. Brad Bird (Ratatouille, The Incredibles) then signed on.

The most bizarre movie offer that he received was soon after he made "Shaun of the Dead." The movie was "Failure to Launch," a 2006 romantic comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker. Wright said: "You get the script for that and you're thinking, 'Really? Me?'"

Edgar would have most likely made Failure to Launch a watchable movie if he had of done it.

Shaun of the Dead Is a classic...

SotD and Hot Fuzz were great films

can't wait for The World's End next in the blood and ice cream trilogy

I salute you back Mr. Wright... you are a legendary director.
But I am curious... The Crazies was a pretty badass movie... wonder what it would of been like if Edgar Wright actually had directed it... hmmm

@nope.com
I've seen The Worlds End on his IMDb... what exactly is it about though?

PS
Just out of curiosity, how many people on here are fans of Spaced? Great f*cking show.

@Ted Mosby
the worlds end is the final movie in the blood and ice cream trilogy. the others are shaun and hot fuzz and spaced is awesome.

@wonderBOY
Ohhhhhhhhh! ok ok I get it now... thought I was missing something there lol Its the ice cream mentioned in both SotD & HF and the final being The World's End... nice.

Spaced is Classic , this and the Comic Strip were channel 4 best comedys by a mile.

Art from series 1 was the inspiration for shaun of the dead apparently.

Liked "SoftD" & "HF" too, but could'nt get into "Spaced", but trailer you are right about "The Comic Strip", my favs "Bad News", "Coppers on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown", "Bonehead & Foyle" and the one about the skinhead and the artist change places.

he would have a really good green hornet movie. aug. 13 can't come soon enough.
rabid writes:

Good. Drag Me To Hell was good and Green Hornet looks decent. Edgar Wright is a mediocre director who got lucky with a funny script once. He'd have ruined either of those films.
velocityknown writes:

@Rabid

Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Spaced are all just lucky huh? Either he's a good director or he's the luckiest son of a bitch in the world.

My money's on good director.

And @Wonderboy

I really really hope "The World's End" is Wright's next project, can't wait for another Pegg, Frost, Wright collaboration.

I bet all the films he passed will end up being better and making more money than what he chose to do. SOTD is okay and benefited from a zombie drought and Hot Fuzz is mediocre and just recycled a lot of other movies, intended or not, it's just lazy writing and directing.
rabid writes:

Shaun of the Dead was the only of his films that I liked, and I'm pretty sure that was just the funny script. Maybe you have to be british to like him or something.
rabid writes:

and I really don't understand fans of Hot Fuzz. That film was abyssmal.

Dave-

The Bullsh*ters , Gino, Fist Full of Travelers cheques , Bad News , More bad news, The Yob , Funseekers...

What a great series that was. Pretty much anyone who was anyone in comedy at the time was on the show and launched the careers of a lot of people as well.

It helped established Chan 4 as a serious broadcaster, now they rely on sh*t like Big Brother :(

When it went over to the BBC and all the stars came back (5 stone heavier this time) it wasn't as good.

Keith Allen What a legend he is (off camera i mean LOL)

I like how he quickly turned down a Mission Impossible movie. It's like "I'm not f*cking going anywhere near Crazy Cruise". Smart man. Hot Fuzz was BETTER than that last M:I movie anyway.
arkflash writes:

SOTD a classic. Funniest scene Shaun and Ed are stunned and jaw dropped as zombie woman gets up after taking a beating in the backyard. Ed rewinds his camera...

Shaun of the dead was meh(Don't understand the popularity and the accolades)
His other one with Pegg and Blanchette was sorta ok.

Dunno why he's so highly acclaimed already.
Him helming Ant-Man(never heard of it though) might not be such a bad idea.Other directors like Neil Blomkamp(District 9) and Alfonso Cuaron(Children Of Men) should be given fair priority as well.

Barney Stinson writes:

@Jake - "His other one with Pegg and Blanchette" - wtf are you smoking? Cate Blanchette was in it for about 2 minutes tops. It's Pegg & Frost, you know the other guy that was also in Shaun of the Dead.
Jake_Awesomeness writes:
on August 8th, 2010 at 3:46:46 PM

Yeah, I know that.
It's that movie where Pegg was paired with a dunce cop.
Just couldn't recollect the name of the movie.
