Guillermo Del Toro to Helm "At the Mountains of Madness" Next

Guillermo Del Toro to Helm "At the Mountains of Madness" NextSubmit Comment
Ever since director Guillermo del Toro dropped out of "The Hobbit" prequels, everyone wanted to know what his next project would be. While he teased fans at Comic-Con with several movies that he is writing and producing, all he had to say about his next directing gig was that he will announce it shortly and that the film would be scary.

Deadline has now learned that the movie he was talking about was "At The Mountains of Madness," which is an adaptation of the HP Lovecraft tale. Del Toro has officially signed on to direct and since it will be shot with 3D cameras, "Avatar" director James Cameron has decided to join as a producer.

In the Lovecraft tale, a gruesome discovery made during a scientific expedition to the South Pole in the 1930s hints at the true origin of mankind having come from elder gods from another planet. Bad things happen when those life forms are awakened.

Finally, a good filmmaker attempts Lovecraft.

If Haunted Mansion fails ... (and I bet it does) ... then he better hope his attempt at a Lovecraftian movie doesn't ...

I mean, it won't be too hard to top Reanimator.

As a big fan of the History Channel's Acient Aliens show I can't help but be somewhat interested in this.

I haven't read anything by Lovecraft, but I have read about his work and it seems like Del Toro is the right person to make an attemp on Lovecraft.

The elder gods will have eyes on their hands, look like Del Toro faeries, and then the terrible 3D gimmick will take the film to a new level of sh*t. Anyone hoping for a good film out of this is going to be really disappointed.

GDT couldn't be more perfectly suited for adapting Lovecraft to the screen. Please god, let him make a Cthulhu movie before Ratner finds out about it...

@Freudian_Nightmare Read his short stories. They're written almost with the same pattern, but they're worthy. Just stay away from his novels. Also check out "The Great God Pan" by Arthur Machen.

@ Max Rock - What are you talking about?? "Reanimator" is a classic in a "Repo Man" kind of way.

@SACdaddy

Same here. That sh*t's crazy. If this turns out anything like Pan's Labyrinth, this will be an awesome movie.

If anybody can bring Lovecraft's visions to the screen, it'd be Del Toro. This one is tough, though: Lovecraft's story has almost no plot, and relies on many pages of expository interpretation of rock carvings, and many repetitions of the word "hideous".

Hope they keep it in the 1930s, a fascinating time. Too bad they're going with the stupid 3D fad.
