David Fincher Says "20,00 Leagues Under the Sea" Remake is His "Empire Strikes Back"

David Fincher Says "20,00 Leagues Under the Sea" Remake is His "Empire Strikes Back"Submit Comment
Back in May, we learned that David Fincher (Fight Club, Curious Case of Benjamin Button) will direct the remake of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" for Disney. MTV News has now caught up with Fincher to get the status of the project.

"We're workin'," he said. "You know, the idea of doing a gigantic steampunk science fiction movie from 1873... Kinda cool."

Meanwhile, /Film spoke with Disney's President of Production Sean Bailey, who is excited to be working with Fincher. He said: "To be able to sit down with David and have David say, 'Look, Iíve never really thought about Disney before, but I really want to try to do my 'Empire Strikes Back.' And I think '20,000 Leagues' is the title.' It's a thrilling conversation to be in."

Bailey went on to speak a bit about the director's vision. "It's a bold, you know, Fincher-esque take," he said. "It's got some of the characters from the original. It's got Land, it's got Aronnax. It's got Nemo, of course. But it's kind of a bold way in."

It better have a f*cking Giant Squid in it; that's all I gotta say Fincher...

I think I'm going to wait for Bioshock instead.

Loved the Kurt Douglas and james Mason version , seems an odd comparison to make that it will Finchers Empire Strikes Back though....

Sounds great to me, but only because I want to see the sequel, "Mysterious Island". It's the better story.

Speaking of which, don't you think it's about time they rebooted "A New Hope"? in 3d?

@Rabid

Don't tempt George. He's already added deleted scenes once and re-mastered them, releasing them with such epic scenes as a young Jabba the Hutt and Han Solo strollin' the boulevard and checkin' out chicks butts ...

I wonder if they'll get Roger Corman to back funding on this one ?

Interesting thought, wonder how this will turn out.
@Rabid-Mysterious Island, have they amde that into a movie. Sounds so familiar.

Yeah, Mysterious Island was sort of a sequel to 20,000 Leagues. It was about a bunch of Yankees who escaped the Civil War in a hot air balloon and landed on an island with strange occurences. Sort of like the original version of LOST, but with Captain Nemo playing Mister Whitmore.
I remember watching it several times when I was a kid, and I had to read the book in school. I think the film was made in the 60s.

@Rabid
Yea I think I seen that growing up. It does sound so familiar.

Reading this just gave me the visual image of a south park episode I watched where Lucas raped a storm trooper and had the dead raped body of Yoda in his closet.

me too, encoreyourface. you don't compare ANYTHING to The Space Opera. if fincher fails (which i don't see why he will), Bailey will be calling him on his cell: "TK421, why aren't you at your post??"

I assume we all read the Jules Verne novel when we were growing up. Still a great adventure story. I'd love it if they made the Nautilus look right: Verne described her as cigar-shaped, which turned out to be a pretty good idea. (Funny thing: the novel has the Nautilus surfacing at the Pole -- the SOUTH Pole. That was before the full coast of Antarctica had been charted.)
