The Riddler Confirmed as Main Villain in "Batman 3"

The Riddler Confirmed as Main Villain in "Batman 3"Submit Comment
FirstShowing got its hands on a studio casting grid for Christopher Nolan's third "Batman" installment. The grid, which is used to keep production companies and agencies in the loop on the project's progress, lists a few bits of information about the new movie.

First, it says that the movie is still being called "Batman 3," which means that an official title has yet to be picked. Second, The Riddler is listed as the main villain. And finally, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is on the grid as the actor to play The Riddler. For now though, Gordon-Levitt is listed as just "interested."

It's still too early to say whether the actor will end up getting the role. After all, the studio is looking for someone between 35 and 45 years of age, and Gordon-Levitt is only 29-years-old. He did, however, just wrap up working with Nolan on "Inception." Stay tuned.

that would be fine, but as secretive as Nolan is I'd rather hear it from his mouth rather than just reading it from another source. as far as i'm concerned, this isn't exactly a confirmation

I guess this is good, but I would've prefered Deadshot. And although I like JGL, my favourite to play The Riddler is Crispin Glover. Perhaps Deadshot can be a secondary villain and be played by JGL?

like he seems so perfect for it, i dont want it to be anyone else
JGL isnt a bad actor but i think he just looks too young
and Michael C Hall from Dexter sucks (my opinion)
he was such a homo in Gamer and the show Dexter itself is over rated (not necessarily bad, just really over rated)but apart from that he shouldnt be the Riddler, he should stick to serious characters (I would say watch Gamer for evidence, but i would never so mean as to tell someone to watch Gamer, since it sucked monster c*ck)

This is great opportunity to do something different with a well known character. If I were Nolan I'd make the Riddler British. Nolan insists on always using Brits and Aussies to play American roles, so why not change things a little and turn an American character into a Brit and keep the accent. Plus, its perfect for the part, think Jeremy Irons' Simon from Die Hard with Avengence only a lot darker. I like the JGL but he's just not intimidating at all. My vote would go to Tom Hardy. Next to Leo he was by far the next best thing about Inception. We already know he can handle crazy after seeing his awesome performance in Bronsan, and we know how big and scary he can get. Hardy is the perfect choice imo.

have any of you even seen nolans last 2 batman movies? r u f*cking kidding me? nolans batman is not some f*cking disney fat-ass farting kid fest, yeah depp is great but not great for riddler. he is not dark enough, the movie would be a giggle fest instead of being a dark action. and dont any of you say, "what about depp in this role or that role?" i say STFU!! ive seen all depps roles and he does not belong in a batman movie. this is not a tom jones and jim carrey fag-fest. go watch batman forever or batman and robin you pirates loving homos. im just so f*cking sick of you duche-fags saying depp for riddler, it wont work. Just STFU and let nolan do his job, he picked ledger and you all were whinning about it like the basement dwelling p*ssys u are, and look how that turned out. now go jerk off to the gay thor pics u bitchasses.

It's official the 3rd film will make less money and I highly doubt it will surpass the first 2 films in any aspect.

JGL still looks like a f*cking brat, couldn't even remember in my film who was younger, him or Leo. If by any chance Nolan want's to f*ck up this more then let JGL play Robin.

Depp sucks he is an overrated actor. Children and family movies are the only ones Depp knows how to do (only " What's eating Gilbert's Grape" and "Donnie Brasco" are worth mentioning). Depp looks like another fake actor, look all the actors that Nolan always cast, they have some kind of realism in them that makes the film more realistic, Depp isn't bringing that to the table, he fits better in Burton's "Imaginary world for girls and kids".

Michael C. Hall can stay in the hall and wait until he rots and dies, cause he sucks.

The Riddler should be played by Guy Pearce. But apparently the studio wants a bigger name to f*ck things up and Nolan will give them that, f*cking himself up in the process. 2012 isn't the end of the world it's when Nolan will drop the ball.

@Freudian_Nightmare

I would 100% agree, and I think that it is about time that Deadshot was in a Nolan movie. And the thing is that Floyd's origin, especially with his parents and brother is right up Nolan's alley.

And on film it would be a great chance to see Batman up against someone that actually knows how to shoot a gun.

Riddler?

Oh no! not the Riddler.

Crap, I always considered the Riddler to be a one trick pony. Look at how much they had to alter the character from the comic books to the Val Kilmer Batman movie just to make him viable, and somewhat of a threat that a regular coffee drinking and donut eating police officer couldn't take down with a billy club and a stun gun.

Not psycho just an obsessive compulsive.

Not an inventor, just a schmuck that's good at solving riddles.

Fighting abilities? You're grandmother could take him out.

Superhuman abilities? Only if dropping to the floor, assuming a fetal position, and crying after he's punched in the stomach counts.

Skills? Did I mention that he's good at solving riddles, because that about covers it...

Difficult to catch? Well if you think that leaving a riddle detailing: what he is doing, where to find him, and the day of the week he let's all of his henchman take the day off as difficult for the second smartest man in the DC Universe to figure out, than I guess that is a yes on that one...

I think Michael Fassbender (from "Inglorious Basterds") would make a great Riddler, and he's not so well-known that it'd be a stretch.

JGL has been the dark horse of my generation. I couldn't STAND "3rd Rock from the Dumb", but "Brick" and Stop/Loss" made me take another look (after he cut that ridiculous hair- hard to think something else besides John Lithgow's pederast face could be more distracting on "3rd Rock").

"Inception" is a masterpiece, and Nolan doesn't toss his actors (clearly). Because of the success of "Inception", I'd say there's a better chance of him taking Edward Nygma if he wants it.

And "GIJoe" owes my childhood an apology.

Hate to break it to you, but Depp is simply just another actor in the biz who happens to have a huge fan base full of girls and faggots. Saying Depp is one or the best actors today it's like saying Andy d*ck is the best comedian today.

Daniel Day Lewis for the Riddler would be an amazing and perfect choice. That's the only way I see this film surpassing The Dark Knight.

Though i wouldn't be disappointed by JGL

For those who don't like the character because he's a bit of a 1 trick pony, you know this is a movie right? he may be a one trick pony but he has only got 2-3 hours to show us that trick so its not going to get old anytime soon, plus this is Nolan we're talking about,
he won't just put the gimicky, spandex clad, nerd against the dark knight, he'll be a f*cked up evil genius

As for Crispin Glover, i would LOVE to see him in a "the killing joke" adaptation

Until it's one of the Nolan brothers, David Goyer, or a Warner Bros. producer or rep making an announcement, I would take all Batman news with a grain of salt. Remember all the bullsh*t rumors surrounding The Dark Knight?? That's exactly what's going on here.

Another thing, Johnny Depp is NOT going to be playing the Riddler, or any character in Nolan's Batman series. Based on all the hype for the casting of the Joker and the fact that Nolan eventually chose someone that no one was thinking of, makes me think that this news is crap.

I also doubt that Joseph Gordon Levitt will be the Riddler, either. I remember after The Prestige, everyone thought that Hugh Jackman was going to be cast as Two-Face, or that Scarlett Johanssen was going to be Catwoman because both of those actors worked with Nolan on his previous picture. I know that Nolan likes working with certain actors, but he also likes to branch out and utilize other people outside his "circle" as well, such evidenced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, etc.

I have no doubt that Nolan will make an excellent "Batman 3", but I would be very surprised to see him use such a blandly traditional villain choice as the Riddler. And I'd be even more surprised if he cast somebody that we were all expecting. Nolan likes to go against expectations; I don't see that trend stopping with his next Batman film.

finally saw inception a few days ago...awesome movie...i'd watch it again but i'm dead broke...but back on topic...for this next batman movie, i know ever since the rumor got out there that people were supporting it like crazy about Johnny Depp for the riddler or Joseph Gordon Levitt for riddler...both are fine choices since despite some films, the better films brings out their quality more...but personally, i would like to stay surprised and let Chris Nolan be the man to blow the fish out of the water...he knows where he's going with his films...and if i were Nolan, i wouldn't use the riddler for the next batman...i mean sure it would be a more dark and sinister type, but it's not really necessary for Nolan's version...i'm just saying, Nolan introduced both new and familiar characters, and as long as he can keep that peak up, it really comes down to the story...and then everything else...professionals in the business seem to forget that...i mean, look at batman forever and batman and robin...they were so focused on keeping that feel you get out of tim burton's versions, but the story was terrible, and among that, the characters they used just didn't blend well like when you watch the cartoon versions...remember in batman forever where they show harvey dent on tv getting the coffee in his face and leads you to believe that is what caused him to be two face?...and then there's Nolan's version of two-face...maybe not exactly what everyone was expecting...but it worked...they even got his face more closer to the way he looks in the comics...even the joker interacted with harvey dent finally...i wasn't expecting that and that was awesome...so to sum it all up, i think everyone who's anxious about the next batman needs to take a chill pill and stay surprised...it'll ruin the fun...then again, Nolan is really great at keeping the best parts for the movie when you see it as opposed to some directors out there that show all the best parts in the trailer and then when you watch it, it turns out terrible

No, I am completely clueless that this is a movie which is why I also said in the same post:

"Look at how much they had to alter the character from the comic books to the Val Kilmer Batman movie just to make him viable."

Now, I don't have reading comprehension on your impressive levels, but from that statement it would seem that I knew that the Riddler they presented in the movies wouldn't exactly be identical to the one in the comic books.

i.e. If they make him an evil f*cked up genius for Batman 3, then they are altering the character for the movies.

The first thing I thought of after watching Inception was, "Which of these guys are going to be in the next Batman movie?" Well, now we know. Although, I'd like to see Berenger in there as the newest boss of the Falcone crime family.

Nolan might chooses Gordon-Levitt as Ledger look-alike on purpose and at the end of Batman 3 it is revealed that
a) the Riddler and the Joker are the same person or b) he is his brother, thus the similar look.

The Riddler is just the Joker only with Riddles! And I agree, he looks too much like Ledger!

Ah well, maybe if they do the Riddler like a skilled, loophole-savvy businessman, it will work within Nolan's universe.

@Left On The Moss

I'll agree with you that if they make him an inventor/scientist (ala Jim Carrey), it will be epic fail. I trust Chris and his brother wholeheartedly that it won't be a letdown with the Riddler. Remember, he took 10 years to create Inception and it's one of the few summer movies not to be overhyped and underperformed. And he is also smart not to pull out the two villian to one hero concept again, unlike some Batman movies in the past have done prior to Batman Begins.
Max Rockatansky Junior writes:

I still think Crispen Glover (Thin Man from Charlie's Angel) was made specifically for this quirky, smart role. He has a way about his acting that would fit perfectly into Nolan's Batman universe.

its funny how quick people are to judge with the possibility of this casting. i believe that the same thing happened to heath ledger when he was cast as the joker. i dont think depp is the best choice for this role and i think joseph has a chance to blow peoples mind like heath did

While Johnny has proven himself to be both a serious solid character actor (ex : Raoul Duke; the tranny in Before Night Falls; the detective in Sleepy Hollow; Blow), he also can do the heavy lifting of a main starring role (ex : The Libertine; Cry Baby; Pirates Of The Carribean), you have a point that he isn't right for the Riddler role. That role requires a fresh face, and Joseph is pretty solid. Has been since The Lookout and showed major chops in Killshot.

I just threw out Crispen's name, due to his qwirkey abilities.

Remember, he's still in negotiations.
Left On The Moss writes:

@Max
My only thing with Crispin Glover is that he's a little too obvious. Not that I don't think he's a good actor, he's just a little bit too... Out in the open. Like, if he plays a nerd, he REALLY plays a nerd. If he plays a crazy person, he REALLY plays a frickin' nut job.

I personally see Casey Affleck. The Riddler should be someone cold and calculating, not a disturbed madman.

@JohnZee
Notice how i didn't start my last post with "@JohnZee"?
Because it was a generalization for all those with that opinion, which includes but isn't limited to you. You aren't the first person to make the argument that Riddler is a bit of a gimmick.

I wrote "For those who don't like the characater because he's a bit of a 1 trick pony, you know this is a movie right? he may be a one trick pony but he has only got 2-3 hours to show us that trick so its not going to get old anytime soon"
Don't take me out of context to make yourself seem big

"Look at how much they had to alter the character from the comic books to the Val Kilmer Batman movie just to make him viable."

That's your quote and i didn't make an argument to that statement, what's your point? We both acknowledged that the character would be changed.
Now, I don't have reading comprehension on your impressive levels, but it's always good to understand the entire post you're criticizing
JohnZee writes:

@Monash

Understand that I wasn't trying to take you out on context. I thought your comment was directed at me, because you came about as close to directly quoting me as you possibly could.

You know with your use of the "One trick pony" phrase.

Yes it could have been a mistake, but you should be able to see how I could make such a mistake.

And if you have been on the internet long enough than you should know that I wasn't taking parts of your entire post and quoting them to falsely make myself look big, I was doing it to make a point. And seldom do you quote any other comment maker's entire lengthy comment.

Especially if the comment in its entirety is on the same exact webpage for easy reference by anyone.

Again look at your second paragraph in that post, it looks like you are addressing me. I could be mistaken, but it would be a very easy mistake to make. (Not going to quote it, because obviously that bothers you, but certainly not going to quote your entire original post...because that bothers me.)

I thought you were needlessly criticizing me, and so I reacted back. I'm not excusing my actions, I'm just explaining why and how I could have made such a mistake.

35-45 is te right age frame. JGL is too Young. He could still get away with playing 22 year old with his lools. I really wanted someone like Peter Skarsgard but now hes villain in Green lantern that wont happen. I trust Nolan will get the right guy. I also think it will be an interesting challenge for Batman this time not just problems with villain but the fact hes on the run.
Charlie9 writes:

You have to trust Nolan, when Heath was cast as Joker everyone was very skeptical, so if it turns out to be an actor you don't expect, prob best to just wait, its gonna be a long haul, a whole year of this kinda sh*t til we actually get a trailer.
SACdaddy writes:

Wow, no Tom Hardy backers? The guy is the best new blood on the market right now. With his acting range and ability to be physically intimidating, he seems like the perfect fit for the part. If not him how about Leo? Every great actor should play a villain at least once in his career. Leo might be the one actor in Nolan's stable that could possibly rival Ledger's Joker. Of course, Daniel Day Lewis would be better than any of these other suggestions, but he usually only does a film once every 5 years or so which would put his next venture at about 2014.
rabid writes:

I'm predicting that JGL, if he is in the movie at all, is playing the Joker and not the Riddler.
I kind of hope the Riddler isn't even in the next film. He's kind of a putz. I'd much rather see a villain who can wrack up a big bodycount, like Croc or Scarface or Penguin. Catwoman would be great too, but only if she doesn't have to be the love interest. Batman doesn't need a girlfriend in every movie.
darkraven28 writes:

Jesus Christ! Do a villain that HASN'T BEEN DONE BEFORE! Riddler was already the villain in the 3rd film of the previous set of Batman films (and frankly, Jim Carrey's contribution was the only thing that worked in Batman Forever).

What I would give to see Bane from the comics properly done in a Batfilm. That would truly erase the sh*tstain of Batman & Robin from memory. But then again, maybe Bane will be the second villain here cuz there's always 2. Plus, Nolan has said that it's a true trilogy end and not a sequel so maybe they'll kill off Batman? (Shivers).
rabid writes:

LOL, you say do a villain that hasn't been done before, and then you suggest Bane.
Tyrkae writes:

I think it will be the riddler in the movie and he will find out the real weakness to Batman which is his identity come on the Riddler is an evil genius and what how hard would it be to find his true identity and as for a 2nd villain i would say go with penguin and have him support Riddler with money to find out the identity and backstab him after finding it out and the story ends with everyone finding out batmans identity
