"Superman 5" Movie That Never Happened

"Superman 5" Movie That Never HappenedSubmit Comment
Back in 1974, three producers purchased the film rights to Superman that eventually resulted in the classic 1978 film. After a great sequel, there were two more installments that many believe led to the end of that series.

But the producers were planning a fifth film, called "Superman Reborn" with comic book writer Cary Bates on board to bring the franchise back to its past glory. Unfortunately, Warner Bros managed to get the rights back and quickly killed "Reborn."

Newsarama now caught up with Bates to get a few details about the project, which would have had Brainiac as the main villain. He said:

"The intent was to leapfrog over Superman III and especially IV, and return the series to the high mark achieved in 1 and 2. It was our desire to do a fully developed, balls-out science fiction story pitting Superman and Brainiac against each other mano a mano."

"Brainiac comes to Earth for the first time and shrinks Metropolis, adding it to his interplanetary collection of miniaturized cities. But because he becomes aware of the unique super-powered being in his latest acquisition, Brainiac miniaturizes himself and ventures into the bottled Metropolis in person. This leads to a knock-down drag-out battle that ends in what appears to be Supermanís death."

"A split-second before his atoms would've been permanently disintegrated, they are sucked into a bottle-city a few rows over... Kandor. There he is 'reborn' as a mortal man, where he gets to reconnect with his Kryptonian roots as he begins the arduous process of rehabilitating himself and eventually escaping from Kandor to resume his battle with Brainiac.

Sound really stupid. Thank god this never happened and thank god Nolan is involved with the reboot

They wanted to ' leapfrog ' three and four because (a) the only good thing about three was Richard Pryor's comedy. The whole video game and rocket missles were stupid and (b) four sucked giant Godzilla testicles as they introduced Nuclear Man to fight Supes, which ... well, it was the Godfather III of Superman movies. Though I'm suspecting DP would've given it a 9/10 back in the day.

Wasn't Bryan Singer's Superman movie TECHNICALLY the fifth movie (historically, not chronologically) ?

Given the right director this might have worked.

Maybe if they hadnt of pissed off Donner and Brando so bad they might have had 4 good blockbusters films instead of just two, because 1 was all Donner and part of what we saw in Superman 2 was Donners as well.

Typical arrogant Holy wood

Its a shame that the best actor to have played Superman didnt get another opportunity to right the disaster of at least Superman 4 and do another good one
Crazyhorse writes:

Did Woody Allen direct Superman 4?

I mean that film was a disaster, just wondering, maybe he was a consultant to the director for the film.

This would have worked...I know this story all too well. You have no idea how epic it could've been. Given in light of my high expectations to the potential, this movie would be hard to reach for most mainstream fans. But I love Brainiac and he deserves that fight.

Yea this does sound stupid

I think it sounds interesting, with a little tweeking here and there it could work.

Sounds pretty grea to me.

I've always wanted to see themissing hour of footage from Superman IV. Before Lex builds the Nuclear Man, he makes a failed clone of Clark that becomes Bizarro. The studio hated it and cut out most of the film.

I actually liked smallville's take on Kandor. rather than being a miniaturized city in a bottle, it was a crystal containing the clones of dead Kryptonians.

What about K Smiths Superman movie. That would a been 5 or 6 or whatever. Its definatley the best how not to make superman story!

Actually folks... I like this story.

IF pulled off well (like Puzo's Supes 1 & 2 - funny Dr. Strangelove you mentioned Godfather III - see Puzo above). It was ballsy for they to approach a 'realistic' (no, not the shrinking of cities as much), but for a Villain this bad-ass, Kal-El meeting his fellow Kyptonians, etc. A life or death battle.

I think it could be done 'super'-well now. Not so sure back then (story yes... effects no).
Ranger writes:

Supes NEEDS to get into the BIGGER stuff (having said that... I like the miniaturized cities Brainiac is collecting). Supes is a Galaxy-wide Super hero. That flying around Metropolis and a bit around the world for a few good deeds is REALLY LIMITED use of this character's potential.

Go fly through the sun to clean his uniform.
So him the minute he leaves the Daily Planet zip around the globe (as Singer had him doing) doing his super thing.

Have him sit on the moon... look back at Earth... pondering things.

Have him correct a planet's orbit for another species of life.

And lose the bastard child (WTF was that about?!?!). And kick bitchy Lois to the curb - that sh*t is tiring and decades overdue to can.

PS: I think Singer deserves a lot more credit (as does Routh) for the job they both did. If you know Supes well... there were TONS (snot spelled backwards - FYI) of references given out of respect for Singer's love for Kal-El and for the respect of Supe fans.

And Shannon Price is a murderous f*ck!

Go to Mel Gibson's thread.... see mustards post.

lol.
Crazyhorse writes:

Yes please leave the Superman has a son crap alone, if you want a family atmosphere with kids and a wife go do a remake of Married With Children

And yes Brandon Routh did almost as good as a job as Reeve did and looked like Superman too

Please Nolan if you do decide to make Superman happen go get Routh or someone that looks like him or Reeve.

I could only take so much of Dean Cane in Lois and Clark. He looked like that guy that delivers for UPS. Thank goodness Terri Hatcher played Lois or I wouldnt have watched

ranger- Nice post

I said before i like Singer's Superman and would liked to have seen him get a second shot at making another movie with Brandon Routh as Superman (good call Crazyhorse) again he did a good job and was very close to reeves superman without looking like he was just copying what he did IMO.

The first 2 superman movies (and donner's cut of 2 as well) are all good movies, 3 and 4 not so much.

This idea sounds pretty interesting though....

Anyway Superman can fly and that is the coolest super power of them all, They should use that to it's maxium in the next movie when ever they finally sort that out !!
