Sylvester Stallone to Play Mob Boss John Gotti?

Sylvester Stallone to Play Mob Boss John Gotti?Submit Comment
TMZ is reporting that Sylvester Stallone is getting ready to play John Gotti in a new biopic about the notorious mob boss. The story will be based on the recollections of Gotti's son, "Junior" John, who is looking to attach Stallone.

John Gotti took over as boss of the Gambino crime family after Paul Castellano was murdered. He was cocky, loud, and had a rather flamboyant style. All of these things managed to draw attention to Gotti, eventually becoming part of his downfall. Back in 1992, Gotti was convicted of numerous charges including 13 murders, conspiracy to commit murder, racketeering, and tax evasion. All of the charges lead to the verdict of life in prison without parole. After spending 10 years in prison, Gotti died of throat cancer.

The site says that the project is far enough in development that a search for a screenwriter is about to begin.

Has stallone ever done any real acting? Who is going to play his little sh*t head kids with those ridiculous haircuts?

sofa-

Watched Cop Land the other week he was pretty good in that , Have not seen F.I.S.T for a while (years in fact) think he was ok in that as well and dont forget Rocky.

Bet this never happen's BTW

Obviously from the picture above he was meant to play this role

Stallone's acting talent was never an issue.
He was actually nominated for the Oscars in the "Best Actor in a Leading Role" category in 77, for his performance in "Rocky".
He was reasonably good in the remaining Rockys as well.

If anything, his problem is being consistently typecasted. The fact that the man doesn't seem to have a wide range doesn't help either, but he can be convincing within his own style.

Considering that Gotti died of throat cancer, and taking Stallone's diction into account, this seems to be right up his alley.

Stallone is great but he doesnt have the acting chops to play Gotti. Where's James Gandolfini when you need him?

crazyhorse- John Gotti had the nick name crazy horse , was that the inspiration for your name ?

Danny Huston (30 days of nights) would be a good shout to play Gotti IMO
CCBlev writes:

Stallone could pull this off, way back when we came out out with the first Rocky in "76" he was actually being touted as the next "Brando".
Trailer-Huston could do it, that mans really come out of nowhere with aot of good movie roles the past 5 years.

Armande Assante already played Gotti,
and he looks pretty close. I thought he did a damn good job at it too!

Stallone has the Acting chops if you don't believe it watch Cop Land, he just hasn't been able to put it to a test, since all he made were action movies, but him in a serious dram and i think he could easily pull it off.

SofaKing writes:

First of all I am a big fan of Stallone's and I think The Expendibles is going to make me love him even more.

That being said, just because he was nominated for an Oscar 33 years ago doesn't mean sh*t. Why hasn't he done anything of this nature since? I saw Copland, but it was so long ago I don't remeber how he did. I hope he does take the role though. and prove the critics (me included) wrong.
Ranger writes:

I liked Copland a lot (for Stallone mainly - gaining weight - background yet, important character, etc.).

This movie... I can take or leave.

The Expendables - still gives me a boner!
trailertrash writes:

"I liked Copland a lot (for Stallone mainly - gaining weight - background yet, important character, etc.)"

That's the core of what made Copland a great film. The movie also had a great cast.

Anyways Sly can act, people just underestimate him and then they get bitch slap right in the face. Best example, Copland.

Then again, I'm eager to see The Expendables more than this Gotti film they are planning to make. Armande Assante did a great job as Gotti, why resurrect the story if Gotti? Instead why doesn't Stallone do a mafia movie a la Road to perdition. Now that would be f*cking epic, but he will not die in it, instead his son from Rocky 5.

The way they've spackled Stallone's face like a third-rate stucco job by illegal immigrants ... hey, I can see the resemblence.

Hey Sly,

Remember Oscar ? You were in a comedy musical about mobsters and it tanked ? Don't worry. None of us can remember it either. Or WANT TO.

Good luck tanking on this sh*t.

Sly Stallone AKA 'Snaps' Provolone to play the dapper don.

@SofaKing

Would Nighthawks count ?

Rocky and a pissed off Lando Calrissian versus Rutger Hauer aka Mr. Blind Fury/Split Second/Surviving the Game himself ?
Max Rockatansky Junior writes:

@Inception

Sly CAN act when

(a) Money isn't in the Equation.

Good example : Cliffhanger vs CopLand

(b) The studio isn't trying to milk a character for all its worth.

Example : Rocky III, Rocky IV and ... ha, ha ... Rocky V

(c) When HE isn't the director of the film.

Ex : FIST; Nighthawks; Rocky; CopLand; Death Race 2000; Victory

although * disclaimer : This can work against him ... JUDGE DREDD. DEMOLITION MAN. SPY KIDS 3-D : GAME OVER

Oh. Found this out :

Sylvester Stallone is planning to retire from acting in the next few years to concentrate on his work as a director.

The 63-year-old movie action man admits he is on "borrowed time" and will soon no longer feel comfortable in front of the camera.

But Stallone, who has written and directed numerous films over the years, hopes he will be able to continue his career by mirroring Clint Eastwood's decision to move behind-the-scenes full-time.

He says, "I'm on borrowed time. At this age I hear the ticking clock and it's as loud as the gong on Big Ben (London's famous clock tower). The ultimate ambition is to follow in Clint Eastwood's footsteps and move on to directing films without me having to be in them.

"I'm on borrowed time and know my longevity will be predicted on being able to make that move."

But here's the deal, Sly. Clint has been in a few movies he's directed.

"Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot".

Now that movie was forgettable.
gatesoftanhauser writes:
on June 26th, 2010 at 10:51:26 AM

Hmmm...I'd say get James Brolin, because he actually looks like Gotti.

And because it's a mob movie, the only justice that can be done to make it an actual good movie must come from the Master of Mafia himself: Martin f*ckin' Scorcese! If someone else directs, it WILL FAIL
Ranger writes:
on June 28th, 2010 at 2:07:59 AM

Does Sly look a bit more like Michael Jackson than Gotti in that picture?
