First Look: Frank Miller's "Xerxes," a Prequel to "300"

First Look: Frank MillerSubmit Comment
Dark Horse comics has unveiled a look at Frank Miller's upcoming "Xerxes" graphic novel, which is a prequel to his "300" graphic novel that was turned into a feature film by director Zack Snyder. The plan is for Snyder to bring "Xerxes" to the big screen as well.

Plot: Xerxes rose to power in fifth-century-BC Persia and became known as 'The King of Kings,' eventually raising and leading a massive army intent on ruthlessly destroying the hated Greeks who killed his father. Xerxes seeks nothing less than to become a god himself -- and achieves his wish!

Miller told LA Times that the graphic novel takes place ten years before "300" and that the story "starts with the Battle of Marathon. The lead character is Themistocles, who became warlord of Greece and built their navy. The story is very different than '300' in that it involves Xerxes' search for godhood. The existence of gods are presupposed in this story and the idea is that he's well on his way to godhood by the end of the story."

He added that Themistocles is the complete opposite of Leonidas, but the "300" character does appear in "Xerxes." If the movie is ever made, Gerard Butler will likely be asked to return for the cameo.

Cool, but i study Classical History, the student in me sees a few things i need to point out

Greeks didn't kill Darius (Xerxes old man) He just died, swearing to get back at the Greeks, but died before he could, so Xerxes took over

Themistocles was an archon, kinda like the King Leonidas of the diplomatic, government side of the Greeks, more importantly he was Athenian, not Spartan. (Not a warlord, but one smart fella, it was his idea to evacuate Athens, his idea for Athens to build a navy and his plan to fight the Persians in a narrow area)

Little more complicated than that, but thats it in a nutshell.

Also......

When it came to the Pelopennesian Wars, the war between Athens and Sparta. Sparta had many chances to beat the sh*ts out Athens before they finally did, but were too f*cking lazy to do so. And at one point, got help from their old buddies the Persian Empire to help beat the sh*ts out of Athens, and beat the sh*t out of them they did!!

@Skippy you are awesome!!! Personally, as a fellow hostorian, I find Xerxes story a lot more interesting than "300". I cannot wait for this GN to come out.

If this is a prequel then how does he have the cut given to him in 300?

Nice call Skippy. I've discussed that part of history a little bit on previous 300 sequel topics on WP, but someone (Frank Miller maybe) keeps getting the facts wrong. Darius and Xeres stories really are awesome though, so I can deal with some dramatic license if it still makes for a good film.
