Drew Barrymore to Direct "Wizard of Oz" Sequel?

Drew Barrymore to Direct "Wizard of Oz" Sequel?Submit Comment
Almost eight years ago, it was reported that Drew Barrymore was attached to the "Wizard of Oz" sequel, called "Surrender Dorothy," which Warner Bros was developing. Now comes news that Barrymore is planning to direct the new film.

In "Surrender Dorothy," Dorothy might have melted the Wicked Witch with a bucket of water, but the Witch didn't die. Fast forward to present time and she is still alive, has broken out of Oz jail and is on her way to New York to get the red slippers once and for all.

No word on whether Barrymore will play the great, great granddaughter of Dorothy, or if she will just stay behind the camera. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, Josh Olson (A History of Violence) is writing a "Wizard of Oz" prequel, which has Robert Downey Jr attached to play the Wizard, who will be the focus of the movie.

Just get a 'Wicked' movie going, that will be better than a sequel.

1. Co-produced by Asylum ?

2. Dammit! I thought they were doing the sequel to They Saved Hitler's Brain!

3. Sounded like a lesbian snuff film to me at first. With Toto there and the Cowardly Lion, maybe some beastility.

4. If Robert Downey Jr is doing the prequel, they need to dress him up as Oz(zy) and show specks of while, Bolivian fairie dust trickling from his nose.

5. Since the Wicked Witch of the West was in ' jail ', she oughta be sportin' a butch hair cut, tattoos and maybe a gold tooth. And she can make Dorothy her new bitch.

6. Case in point : Why the f*ck does everything center around New York ? First the f*cking blue-ball Smurfs, now this ?

@max
lol I'd definatly see this, if the wicked with came out loking like that. Cussing everywhere, making Dororty her new bitch, tatted up.

some movie ideas should never be made

well, that sucks

Agree with masht7, it's high time for a "Wicked" movie.

Yes, Wicked soooooo needs to be made.
I love Drew and all but an Oz sequel has been done and failed. And this concept doesn't sound promising either. As soon as you bring the Oz world into the real world, you automatically fail.

Now the Oz prequel is an interesting concept.
I would love to see on film how the Wizard came about from humble guy flying a hotair balloon in a state fair to the great and powerful Oz and flesh out the story as to why he was pitted against the witches. And just how bad was the witch that Dorothy flattened.
And with RDJ in it, good times indeed.

I'd like Drew to direct my balls resting on her chin.

LOL @Ranger, how do you think she got that crooked smile in the first place?
rabid writes:

So instead of using any of the original sequels to the story, they're going to make up a new one and set it in New York?
If I want to see a reimagining of Oz, I want to see Dark Oz.

@Bunny - were if from me, I'd be telling anyone that would listen!

Wizard of Oz in present time:

The lion would get shot on site and/or taking by animal control.

The tinman and scarecrow would fit right in oddly enough because there are people who put on gayer sh*t this world.

Flying monkeys in New York? Bring it on.

Wizard: Be played by Robin Williams "Frank Caliendo"

Munch skins will be midget's on tricycles (always a good time)

Finally... Dorothy, Witch of the East and West have a threesome.

Potential for oscar.
