New Zealand Plans to Build "WELLYWOOD" Sign

New Zealand Plans to Build "WELLYWOOD" SignSubmit Comment
New Zealand is planning to build a "WELLYWOOD" sign which will mimic the famous "HOLLYWOOD" sign in Los Angeles, but will be a third of the size. Wellington Airport will pay for the construction on the Miramar site and expects to have everything complete by June.

"The sign will help cement Wellywood's place as an international tourism landmark," said Wellington Airport CEO Steve Fitzgerald. "It's Kiwi tongue-in-cheek humor at its very best, but beneath the leg-pulling is genuine pride. Several of the most popular films ever made were born in Miramar. Within a mile of the sign is the birth place of Middle-earth and Pandora."

Tours of film-related facilities in Miramar are emerging as one of the city's prime tourist attractions, with about 100,000 people last year visiting the Weta Cave Weta's mini-museum, theatrette and shop. The film industry pumps an estimated $285 million a year into Wellington.

"The sign will be one of the first things people will see when they arrive in Wellington," said Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast. "They will be left in no doubt that this is the heart and soul of New Zealand's film industry."

After living there for a while, I can truly say I love this town, but why not create something more original?

im based in Wellington, NZ and I don't think it's going to get made - there is a lot of opposition claiming that it is "tacky and gimmicky"..

im 50/50 on it - it's an interesting way to give a tip of the hat to the NZ film industry
