"Speedy Gonzales" Movie in the Works, Without the Racism

"Speedy Gonzales" Movie in the Works, Without the RacismSubmit Comment
New Line Cinema has announced that it will bring the animated Speedy Gonzales character to the big screen in his own live-action/CG film with George Lopez attached to voice the character.

Known as the fastest mouse in all of Mexico, Speedy debuted in the 1950s as a regular nemesis of Sylvester the Cat. Friz Freleng and Hawley Pratt's 1955 short about the tiny hero, "Speedy Gonzales," won the Academy Award for best short subject. Pat Boone even wrote a hit song about the famous mouse in 1962.

Over the years, Speedy appeared in the live-action/animation features "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," "Space Jam" and "Looney Tunes: Back in Action." But the character has often courted criticism that the ethnic characterizations of him and his compatriots (especially lazy cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez) are stereotypically racist and severely outdated.

Aware of this, New Line and the producers plan to update the brand with a modernized sensibility (it takes place in present day). "We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s -- the racist Speedy," said Anne Lopez. "Speedy's going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he's a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he's good at."

That path becomes clearer once Speedy befriends a gun-shy race-car driver.

This is stupid. I mean, what did racism ever do to anybody? Stereotypes aren't even racist. sh*t, I'm going to have to cry racism the next time I see a cowboy on tv. Afterall, not all white men wear cowboy hats and speak with Southern accents. Stupid PC bullsh*t.

I dunno... that's worse than saying Pepe Le Pew isn't a smelly frenchman... or Tweetie Bird is a retard... or Porky Pig has a st-stu-stutter... Haven't we put up with enough from Ratatouille with this?

The racism is what made it funny!!

So they'll "update" it for a modern audience? What? With "Illegal Sanchez", or "Unplanned Ramirez" or "Home Depot Parking Lot Gomez" or "Why All The Z's In Our Last Name Vasquez"?
ChadRo writes:

They don't understand that almost the entire cast of Looney Tunes is based on racism? Speedy, Slowpoke, Elmer Fudd as the lovable loser, Daffy as the know-it-all stab-you in the back douchebag, Pepe the stinky Frenchman, Black Jack Cirack as a smelly French Canadian, Foghorn Leghorn as a racist deep south slaveowner, Yosimite Sam basically a solder for the South (Any of you Yankees step a foot out of that dugout and I'll fill ya full of lead!),
Who was bugs? The smart alec cool white guy who rarely screws up and always comes out on top!
Just about any stereotype found in the '40's and '50's can be found in these cartoons. Leave it alone, don't need any more pussification of Americans.

@ChadRo - well said, Sir! Everyone gets so up tight about race. Quit being so serious all the time and live a little. Make fun of yourself....its fun!!!

BunnyFooFoo writes:

100% correct Chad!! I've seen some horribly racist cartoons from the likes of Bugs vs. the Japs, or anytime ink or smoke is on the face of a character, they're referred to as "Blackie" (i.e. blackface) Hell Droopy Dog's main foil is the southern wolf decked out in soldier uniform from the civil war literally whistling Dixie.
They even redid the voice for the black "Aunt Jemima-ish" owner of Tom from Tom and Jerry until they just finally stopped showing them altogether.
Get over yourselves and loosen your jockstraps folks, it's just satire!!

What the hell was racist about Speedy Gonzales? The accent? The sombrero? Are Mexicans really that p*ssy that they get offended by a cartoon mouse? They need to trade in their vaginas for the c*cks they once had.

True that cyberpunk.

Me being Mexican, I've loved the racism in speedy cartoons. Couldn't imagine watching them without it. They said we've come along way, but really still got a long way to go without people taking sh*t up the ass like COC at the glory hole at club rainbow
