Bruce Willis Says "Cop Out" Will Make Movie History

Bruce Willis Says "Cop Out" Will Make Movie HistorySubmit Comment
Myself and several other journalists were speaking to Bruce Willis about his upcoming "Cop Out" comedy during Sunday's press junket. At the end of the interview he gets ready to leave the room, but stops to say the following:

"One of you guys needs to write about this. Someone needs to write about the fact that even though this film descends from a long line of cop movies and cop buddy movies, I think this is the first time in history -- and maybe this is only important to me -- that a black actor and a white actor in a buddy cop movie where they work together everyday where it isn't even mentioned. Not one time in this film is it mentioned. That's a big step and that's a good thing. It doesn't have to be about that."

Since I have already seen the movie, I can confirm that not a single time does Willis or Tracy Morgan mention their race. But if you watch the first trailer for "Cop Out" there is a scene in which Willis says that he's in charge and will not let Morgan go undercover. Morgan replies: "Hello, the President is black now. We make decisions."

That scene was cut from the theatrical version. Could it be because Willis made a big deal about it? Or maybe because the script was originally written for two white actors?

When we spoke to the writers, they said that Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell were first considered. And at one point, even James Gandolfini and Robin Williams were attached to the project, with Williams playing Morgan's character.

WAIT a minute! Wahlberg and Ferrell are in the OTHER buddy-cop movie, "The Other Guys". I find it hard to believe THAT teaming just happens to come to mind for two different films. More likely the WP staff can't keep their facts straight... as usual.

Did any of the Lethal Weapon movies have any black and white jokes going back and forth between the leads either? No, I didn't think so.

Bruce...have you mind checked.

And Obama isn't 'black' - his mother was white (but that seems to get overlooked at every turn, which I think disrespects the job she did raising him).

So, 'Obama is white!' - take that you 'Obama is black!' folks that keep saying that.

@Shift-Eyed Dog

This happens all the time. Wahlberg and Ferrell were looking for a buddy cop project to do together. Studios show them their scripts. Warner Brothers had "A Couple of d*cks" and Columbia had The Other Guys. Why's that so hard to believe?

I f*cking hate Farmville!!!

I feel like killing all the f*cking animals of people that keep sending me invitations to play and then set their barns on fire with those people in them, if that were possible!

So, in a way, I get what Bruce Willis is saying.
From my perspective, we're both loosing our f*cking minds (over different subjects, yes, but still...) and we took the day to start saying dumb sh*t, just for the sake of it.

Also, I lost my respect for this movie and everybody in it, after they changed the title.
I can't stand censorship, in any shape or form.

Also, I can't stand Julia f*cking Roberts, but that's a different subject entirely.

Back to topic: Bruce Willis is out of his f*cking mind.

alexgi writes:

@Shifty-Eyed Dog: We didn't confuse anything. Wahlberg and Ferrell just moved on to another NYPD comedy. I know it seems strange, but this was said by both Kevin Smith and the writers.
alexgi writes:

Here is what I thought of the movie: Bruce Willis looks uncomfortable the entire time, just like he did when I ran into in the bathroom. I found Tracy Morgan hilarious, for the first time ever. And Seann William Scott was the big highlight of the film. I won't say how, but you can tell that the filmmakers would like to bring him back in case of a sequel.

The movie is just a plain buddy cop comedy, but it has lots of bizarre characters, like the little kid thief, Scott's character and the mother who thinks she can do a better job of capturing a burglar than the cops.

I enjoy buddy cop movies, which is why I enjoyed this one. But overall, it is nothing special.

Kevin did a pretty good job, but the editing felt choppy at times. He said that some Oscar-winning editor was brought in to fix the movie, but the editor didn't find anything to do and felt that Kevin's version was perfect. It still felt awkward at times.

And for anyone who cares, Tracy Morgan is very charming and polite in person, which is not how he seems on TV or in movies. He and Scott were some of the most interesting and down to earth celebrities that I have ever interviewed. Smith and Willis didn't make my "cool" list.

If you don't know what farmville is, clearly you don't use Facebook. ;)

I'm a little disappointed that the Obama joke is not in the movie. Sue me, but I thought it was actually funny.

@Ranger

I think there was some "racial tension" and a few racial comments thrown around in the Lethal Weapons but no jokes... Mel should have banged Glovers daughter in the movie.

SACdaddy writes:

@Ranger: Good call my friend. I was thinking about Lethal Weapon the minute I read Willis comments. I'm pretty sure that in the first film neither one's race is ever discussed, but of course the second one had a very racial atmosphere since they were dealing with the South African badguys (one named Adolf "Now you be a good caffa") but I still don't think the subject was ever discussed between Mel and Danny's character. "But...but...he's black" LOL! (priceless)
SACdaddy writes:

Outside of Loaded Weapon with Emilio Esteves and Sam Jackson are there anymore black/white buddy cop movies out there. Does Die Hard with Avengence count (only Bruce was a cop)?
RickyGabrielBird writes:

I think I have figured out the formula for buddy cop films...

Black guy: Talks fast. Acts stupid.
White guy: Talks slow. Acts straight.
Chinese guy: Dont talk. Kung fu master.
ACTIONFIGURE writes:

Tracy Morgan finds himself funny...it would appear that's enough for him.
SACdaddy writes:
on February 23rd, 2010 at 8:18:43 AM

@Ricky: Funny, Lethal Weapon is the exact opposite of your formula. Thats probably why it worked though :-)
RickyGabrielBird writes:
on February 23rd, 2010 at 8:27:42 AM

@SAC Indeed it is and what a awesome film that was. After that they just seemed to stereotype people by race in those type of movies.

bale01289 writes:

Poor, poor, drug infused Bruce Willis! One too many hits to the noggin, Mr. McClain! If its not mentioned in the movie, why bring it up and put spotlights on the issue at a press conf? I think sometimes Bruce talks, just to hear himself speak! BW puts out some hella-good movies, but he hasntbeen the same since he got caught doin the "white guy" dance with PuffDiddly at the VMAs!
barley_cat writes:

It'll make movie history because the leads are two different races ?

Rush hour?

Last time I checked, Chan & Tucker are not the same race
bale01289 writes:
on February 23rd, 2010 at 9:08:18 AM

@barley - they are saying that it will make history because their cast DOESN'T play off of their racial differences. I'm sure you just misread. It happens, lol xoxox!

Bruce, if you gotta point it out, it obviously isn't worth mentioning! Maybe ought to let the audience figure it out for themselves, and THEN, maybe you could make "history" with this one. Either way, I'm goin to see it, and I could care less. Still boils down to being white cop/black cop.
FYI - Alex, just saw a commercial for "CopOut" where they refer to themselves as "WhiteLightning" and "BlackThunder".......not a racial reference????
bale01289 writes:

@Alex - last part of my comment isn't directed at you to be bitching, btw. Figured maybe you might have missed that particular commercial (might be new, just saw it today) or they might have cut it from the final print.

Now as for this movie, I f*cking hate when movies show sh*t in their trailers that doesn't even take place in the actual movie. I mean come on!

@SofaKing - really? Honestly I don't remember even one racial comment in the Lethal Weapon movies (but let's not go with my memory).

As for Gibson should have poked Glover's daughter... no argument here.
Ranger writes:

@aut - apparently 'it's better' because Bruce says it is... lol.

As another poster above has already said, his making an comment about this 'race not being an issue' has now made it an issue... nice job Bruce.

Willis feels/sounds like he's becoming (already is) a lot like Michael Jackson eccentric.

@alexgi - was wondering if you got a chance to see the commercial I mentioned earlier? Curiosity has the better of me, and I was wondering if you recalled hearing those references in the movie? ("White Lightning" & "Black Thunder") I've been seeing the ad all day, and every time I see it I want to slap Bruce Willis! I know you're busy putting up new threads around this time, but I would really like to read what you have to say.

Ranger writes:

I'm looking forward to this...

But just to see if Willis playing his cool self is so cool... it freezes out any interest at the box office.

And if it's to fail... it'll take (hopefully) some of the wind out of his sails as well.

Diehard and The 6th Sense was quite a while ago already Bruce.
