Nielsen to Include Online Viewing Into Ratings

Nielsen to Include Online Viewing Into RatingsSubmit Comment
Television networks have been complaining that their programming is looking less valuable to advertisers because more and more people are watching their shows online instead of on TV.

To solve this problem, Nielsen Media Research is now planning to track the programming on both TV and the internet and put together a combined rating.

The one big problem is that commercials that run during television shows would also need to run during the online viewings. Typically, there are fewer ads online and the shows attract different sponsors from those on television.

Because of this, sites like Hulu are not currently set up to be tracked by Nielsen. But Comcast's Fancast Xfinity is already displaying the same ads and Time Warner Cable is currently testing their on-demand online viewing service that is capable to do that as well.

Nielsen will launch its new service in September and will pull in online viewing data from 7,500 of the 12,000 households in its National People meter Sample.

Thank god, now maybe some worthy shows will survive cancellation.

Great. Soon we'll be able to know who is the most viewed pornstar alive. Looks like it's my time to shine.

Nielsen Ratings are absolute sh*t. I watch stuff online because of less commercials (or if I download - no commercials) and I'm not gonna start watching sh*t online on the websites that they do track if it's gonna have the same amount of commercials. They need to have a better system for TV shows, so great shows like Firefly don't get canceled.

Finally. Maybe now they can bring back Sarah Conner Chronicles.

Yep, Porn will be the number one rated show. I wonder if they'll hand out a Golden Globe for "Throat"?

haha clever.

it started of really good and then got sooo slow and every episode was anticlimactic. Like that sh*tty show Heroes.

If Nielsen included online ratings, Conan O'Brien would be on top and Jay wouldve been gone instantly. What a shame that they're deciding this now.

that's sh*t. now there will be WAY to many commercials on web-sites, which will piss people off. imagine YOUTUBE with commercials, that would be absolute chaos. i watch most of my TV shows/movies online, so this is a real downer.

bunch of money hungry *blanks* (insert whatever cuss word you want, multiple choice!)

if they want money they should ask James Cameron, he just recently stole nearly two billion with his hypnotic device.
