"Avatar" to Surpass "Titanic" on MondaySubmit Comment
Winning the weekend for sixth time in a row, James Cameron's "Avatar" has grossed another $36 million to bring its domestic total to around $553 million. That was enough to surpass "The Dark Knight" to become the second highest grossing film ever at the domestic box office.

While Cameron's "Titanic" still holds the domestic record with $600 million, "Avatar" was able to beat it internationally. Overseas "Avatar" has now taken in $1.28 billion, which is about $40 million more than "Titanic." And while it will probably be another two weeks before "Avatar" can become the highest grossing domestic movie of all time, it will likely only need to wait till Monday to become the highest grossing worldwide movie. "Avatar" only needs another $6 million.

Elsewhere this weekend, the sci-fi actioner "Legion" took second place with $18.2 million, while the family comedy "Tooth Fairy" bowed with $14.5 million. The drama "Extraordinary Measures," which took seventh place, grossed only $7 million.

I liked this movie, even though everyone on this site seems to bash anybody who was involved with it.

I have a man-crush on Sam Worthington.

Sam W. is the worst thing in the movie. And the movie itself was very OK.

Tooth Fairy on the third place? Really?! Did anyone actually saw the trailer for that "thing"?!?!

however Titanic does have much more ticket-sales then Avatar does, considering the price movies where back then and now ... Titanic still actually did much better.

@ OwenWilsonsNose:

That's nonsense. Not everybody on this site bashes people who are involved in "Avatar", nor people who liked the movie, just for the sake of it.

The movie was OK, but it's not worth all the attention and recognition (in terms of awards) it's been getting.
That's essentially what some of the users around these parts complain about.

I said it before and I'll keep on saying, "Avatar" is nothing but eye-candy... and eye-candy makes more business than vindy's mother at a pick-up bar chock-full of sailors on a Saturday night.

James Cameron sold his soul to the devil in exchange for having everyone of his movies from here on out being the highest grossing movie of all time. After the deal was finalized, he kicked the devil in the throat and took his soul back. Being that the devil can appreciate irony he could not stay mad at him for long and they now play cards every second wednesday of the month.

I love that this visually stunning, narratively mediocre film is doing so well.

And while the difference in ticket prices does make a big difference, I wouldn't say that Titanic did much better. It definitely sold more tickets so far, I just wouldn't say MUCH more. And I think in the long run Avatar will end up selling more tickets, and doing better on DVD and BRay (when compared to Titanics VHS and DVD numbers)since Titanic was also just visually stunning mediocre story-telling. Except Titanic was less visually stunning with a sh*ttier plot.

It can make all that money, it doesnt matter, money doesnt say anything about the quality of the movie. Its entertaining eye-candy: cool visuals that have never been seen before with some interesting 3D techniques. The only reason its making this much is because its a phenomenon that can only be witnessed in theaters as of now because there aren't 3D DVDs, even bluray couldnt do justice to this film visually. Like many others, I found the movie to be OK (story was Pocahontas/Dances With Wolves/Last Samurai on a different planet and the characters were very underdeveloped) but it was fun to watch (even though it felt like my right eye was melting because of the 3D and I had a massive headache afterward), but good for Cameron for making his money back. But still it doesnt deserve all this award recognition, if it wins Best Picture that will be the biggest joke of all.
takai writes:

Whenever someone says anything about 'Avatar', especially in regards to it's record setting, all I hear is "Blah blah blah, I'm a dirty tramp."

Also, I can't wait for a 3D, virtual reality, $40 per ticket, Pixar film to pass 'Avatar'. Because how much money it makes, no matter the ticket price, is the merit of how good the film is.

I just didn't like that movie. Why couldn't they make (spoilers, I guess) Jake's dead brother something other than a scientist. That threw me off. And that Deus Ex Machina at the end kinda killed it for me. It was beautiful to look at, but very derivative and dull.

I was trying to have this argument the other day on here but the topic is long since dead...

The argument was that, regardless of inflation, regardless of tickets sold, ticket cost etc...
Avatar just had no real Competition..

I think this came from Takai... Well, as much im on the fence with Avatar and dont care either way.. This statement couldn't be any further from the truth... Lets have a look at the Dark Knight, released at the end of July... Its ONLY f*cking competition from there out was Tropic Thunder, Step Brothers and Pineapple Express, 2 of which failed to break 100 million at the BO... So... how do you base an argument around that, when you have a film like Sherlock Holmes, on the brink of 200 million at the BO and even the f*cking chipmunks, Which already broke 200 million... Not too mention this past week The Book of Eli debuting at almost 40mil... How about its complicated? raked in almost 100mil... I dont see that argument..

The fact of the matter is, there is no argument as to why Avatar has made so much, Inflation this inflation that, high ticket prices, no competition etc.. Its made toooooo much f*cking money in less than 6 weeks to argue the fact that MILLIONS of people have seen and love this film, and its their repeat viewings that are keeping it alive...

Like I said, I thought it was a cool movie.. But again I never bought into the hype, i just wanted to see another James Cameron movie, so I didnt go in with all these fan boy expectations.. So if Millions upon millions of people agree that this film is one for the ages and is worth seeing over and over to make it billions of dollars... I mean, are any of your opinions about it being a piece of sh*t or a cheat at the box office credible in any way? Nope... Not at all... talk as much sh*t as you want... He pulled it off when every f*cking one of you said that he wouldn't....

It seems that the 150 million dollars of promotion budget worked exactly, with the help of the gossip and chat of the audience to each other in order to convince them to go see this movie. The next Avatar movie that Cameron directs will be promoted with the logline "From the Director of Titanic and Avatar", and 200 million dollars will be spent to promote this next movie.

I really enjoyed AVATAR.. I saw on someones post that asked What connection did you make with any of the characters?
SPOILER BELOW!!!

There was one scene where Nitiri's mother was crying and everything was being destroyed and she cut down Jake and had that one line to him.. that one hit home with me. I also had a deep connection with the entire species of Navi. Also when Jake told Nitiri what he was really doing there Nitiri's reaction and her scream of anger gave me chills.

This movie deserves every credit it gets.

my comment came from a perspective that is looking in on the us, from canada.

it's just an observation that i felt i should share after reading comments like " oh slavery is making a comeback!" i know these are not your words, but im only explaining as to why i posted my comment.

also the plight in america can be contributed to all corporations that outsource labour to foriegn undeveloped countries. taking jobs away from the american public.

so this whole notion of "hey lets fix our front yard first before we startb helping others" is just stoopid, so quit ypour whining folks.

also this is a movie site, so maybe poilitics dont belong on here, but when some hick starts to say racial sh*t then its already political.

@ captnhowdy:

No biggie. Your first post looked a little out of context, but I see what you're saying.

Regarding whose front yard America should fix first and the outsourcing jobs issue, things aren't so cut and dry.
Usually, the best solution lies somewhere in the middle, and not "it's either here, or there", or "the foreigners are taking away our jobs".

And politics are always welcome in this site, since they're often the motivation behind many of the best movies out there.

You may want to take racial provocative comments posted on here lightly, though. Most of the times, they're more meant to be quick jokes, rather than public declarations of any type of racial hatred.

Cheers.

@ Triggax - Just because the movies 'Avatar' is showing alongside made some decent money, does not mean they were its direct competition.

Chipmunks - Directed at children

Sherlock Holmes - Directed at young adults, primarily Guy Ritchie fans. (in my opinion)

Book of Eli - Directed at a certain action movie demographic

It's Complicated - I don't even know what it's about.

Avatar -Directed at kids, teens, adults, of every demographic. A true 'escape' experience.

There's no competition there, but then again, that's WHY they released it then. Because there was nothing to take money away.

I have never made a big deal of TDK. I refused to see it in theaters (as I'm doing with Avatar) to spite my friend who wouldn't shut up about it. But I can say that I give TDK more credit as far as making a sh*t ton of money.

Dark Knight was a dark comic book movie aimed at a far narrower audience than Avatar, yet it broke the billion mark.

"Itss made toooooo much f*cking money in less than 6 weeks to argue the fact that MILLIONS of people have seen and love this film, and its their repeat viewings that are keeping it alive"

Seriously, I get what you're saying, but the 3D tickets were f*cking $17! IMAX was like $20+.

If you're going to argue about box office (record) success, you HAVE to consider inflation and ticket prices. It makes no sense not to.

Like I've said before, I don't passionately care about box office bullsh*t, but it's real fun to discuss.
triggax writes:

Dark Knight was a dark comic book movie aimed at a far narrower audience than Avatar, yet it broke the billion mark.//

WTF Batman, Dude BATMAN! Are you f*cking serious? Its f*cking batman... wtf... I semi understand what you're saying but at the same time, ITS f*ckING BATMAN... I would totally disagree, that movie as aimed at every single person on the planet thats ever heard of Batman.. which is everybody... Its f*cking batman..

Oh and again, Im not arguing inflation, nor am I concerned about what Avatars made, all im saying is that these films were still able to rake in 50-70 million per weekend with avatar STILL on top.... regardless of the demographic its directed at thats still pretty f*cking heavy competition...

I mean, after 12 years.. Titanic with inflation at this point would be impossible to mount... But thats not what im saying at all.. I never said it didnt matter.. im simply stating that regardless of high tickets prices.. it still made 2 billion f*cking dollars... first off, my imax tickets were 16.50, my regular theater tickets to see it were 14.50... I saw Sherlock Holmes in the regular theater it was 13.50... So by that logic had sherlock holmes been 14.50 it would be one of the highest grossing films of all time... this is all im really getting at man... I mean if it were able to make say over 100 mil in theaters and the ticket prices were more expensive, sure you could attribute a good chunk of that success towards the ticket price... but when something damn near clears 2 f*cking billion man...

Anyways... Yeah.. internationally, unadjusted avatar just officially became the highest grossing film of all time... unadjusted...
But in all actuality, so it needs about 500mil more to break the adjusted amount...

Im just sayin' man... For a movie where every sniveling nay sayer all over the web said wouldn't make the budget back... Its quadrupled its budget and damn near become the highest grossing film ever... Thats gotta sting to be THAT f*cking wrong...

MmMm... Im really just rambling..

My point is, no matter what negative comments people may have about how the film made its money or how sh*tty they feel the film is... It f*cking made 2 billion dollars....
I f*cking HATED Titanic short of the ending, It made more money than avatar, won 800,000 oscars and as far as Im concerned was WAAAAAAAY f*cking sh*ttier than Avatar.. I dont know.. I mean really at the end of the day here.. What does this really say about the population of this planet? Are we all retarded? Yes...

I finally went to see Avatar. Good acting, excellent CGI and filming. But the plot was thin with alot of rehashing of prior Sci-fi projects (Giovanni Ribisi's character was lifted straight from Aliens). And the political message in the middle of the film was insulting. Not because of it's message, but because Cameron decided to spell it out.

I really don't think it deserves the film awards aside from best effects, and it doesn't deserve the box-office it is getting. I will say it was far superior to something like Transformers 2.

in regards to avatar, ive seen it once and thought it to be garbage, eye candy yes.

there is a point in saying comparing actual ticket sales vs just the money that is being made due to inflation, but people tend to take it at face value and just pay attention to the money, hey money makes the world go around folks

lol

Yeah, everyone's heard of Batman, but Batman Begins and TDK seemed to be steered more towards fans of the comics, just because of how badass they were compared to the first Batman films.

I'm not going to lie, I was one of the nay-sayers, and it does suck to be THAT freaking wrong, but to know that all the suckers buying tickets to this movie understand how shallow the film is, makes it a little better.

Yeah, the movie is a massive success. Sh*t happens. But it is pretty funny to see how retarded some people are.

(I'm still pulling for a Pixar film to end up on top of the box office record)

As big as Batman is its a largely American thing. Look at its foreign box office numbers. Batman can't compete with an Avatar on a global scale its just not for everyone. Superman has more of a chance of global appeal and even then I'm not sure it could compete with something like an Avatar or Titanic or even stuff like Star Wars or E.T stuff that is geared towards extremely wide audiences.

I mean it is INCREDIBLE to think Gone with the Wind made 196+ million at the box office. TICKETS WERE LIKE 25 cents. When a film like Avatar makes damn near 2 billion I'm like meh, I mean they rape you so much at the ticket booth these days. Also Cameron picked a perfect time to release, not even on a competition stand point but a work standpoint. People were on vacation with their families, students out of school, catch them right during the christmas chill period.

Well.. Its largely a north american thing, I'd say it's pretty big in the UK as well.. I know this particular Batman was A HUGE DEAL in australia... I think we can all agree on that...

It still managed to surpass the 1 billion mark world wide.. so it was still recognized a fair bit over seas..
