Update: Tobey Maguire is Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit"?

Update: Tobey Maguire is Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit"?Submit Comment
About a months ago, Tobey Maguire stated that he and director Guillermo Del Toro have been planning something for the near future. This sparked rumors that the actor may star as Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit" prequels. But two days later Maguire took his statement back by saying that his words were misconstrued.

At the time it wasn't clear how Maguire would be able to take the Bilbo role considering that he had to begin work on "Spider-Man 4." But now that the superhero movie has fallen apart, the actor is once again being named as the lead in "The Hobbit."

"I have been personally told by a source very close to Guillermo del Toro that it's true... Tobey Maguire IS The Hobbit," said AMC's John Campea. A bit later, The Sun confirmed the rumor after getting in touch with its own sources.

Update: Director Guillermo Del Toro has posted a message on The One Ring forum denying the rumor. "Two words. Not true," he said.

Hey, dude is a way better actor than people give hiim credit for. Still, if "The Hobbit" had been made before Lord of the Rings I would have suggested Ian Holms for the role, the guy who had played Bilbo for the LOTR series for the first movie and the end of the last movie. He played the role great. But I can see Tobey McGuire as a younger version of Ian Holms so I think he is a great choice.

Hobbit sense is tingling

By the way, how's this for what a Tobey Maguire victory. I think this picture sums up just how unaffected he is by a Spider-Man 4:

Well, he will kinda look like Frodo, seeing how Bilbo is his Dad, kinda works
Sev writes:

I take it you guys have only seen McGuire in Spiderman 1, 2 and 3 yeah? Cus he's actually a f*cking good character actor when he's given a good role. He looks like Ian Holm, and if the direction is rock solid, he could be really good.
J.A.Ottley writes:

Nice at least they got a name thats gonna sell the film, this should be interesting because he makes a great replacement for a younger version of Ian Holmes
barley_cat writes:

@SEV
Well you just bit yourself in the arse with that statement there mate lol. A good actor should be good despite the directing right?

Even the most acclaimed director in Hollywood couldn't make a bad actor look talented, unless he cut him out of the movie!

Bilbo is Frodo's uncle...

It could be good, Guillermo is the man and Tobey isn't a bad actor. I loved him in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas...

do we really care if he's in any other movie other than spiderman?
Kindlegolas writes:

That'd be cool, I like Tobey Maguire
Peter Parker writes:
on January 18th, 2010 at 9:16:53 PM

That's funny, Tobey Maguire looked just like a hobbit when he was playing Peter Parker.

All he needs to do is to change costumes and there, instant hobbit.

HorrorJunky4Life writes:

Trueman: Unless Tobey Maguire is sucking up large amounts of blow, I'm pretty sure he is still rich enough from the Spiderman films to retire and live on some tropical island for the rest of his life. And he'll still get paid to do all of the artsy fartsy films he's always wanting to do.
Pathfinder writes:

Tobey Maguire is a tight assed bitch who doesn't tip anyone properly(like many celebrities) and only gives money when he will receive recognition for it (Like Belushi, Pam Anderson, and most other celebrities) I have never paid to see a movie Tobey Maguire was in and wont start now. If Jackson & NewLine want maguire to ruin the Hobbit movie(s) then we can only pray that their future projects show greater distinguishment of talent, because Tobey dont have it!!!!
HorrorJunky4Life writes:

Pathfinder: I'm going to assume that you are not only a waiter but Tobey was one of your customers. If not, then how do you know this?

And this twat is about as far away from a Hobbit as you can get.Hobbit are suppossed to represent rural England in the great war(ww1)not gay overacting emos who ruin classic characters.
Martin Freeman,no makeup needed.
rocketman writes:

....Plus i don't want amn American trying to do a rural English accent and murdering the films either.
no offence to Americans, its just your accents are by and large a bit iffy when trying to do'English'(Mary Poppins?),just cast a f*cking Brit and have done with it.
Brody writes:

Tobey's not a bad choice, I think he would do a good job. However, if you're after a British contender, then Aaron Johnson might have a chance.
Can't wait for the film.
Sev writes:

@barley_cat

Erm, not necessarily. If the Director does a bad job the actor's performance is going to suffer from it.
