Google Infringed on Philip K. Dick's "Blade Runner" Novel?

Posted: January 7th, 2010 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Google Infringed on Philip K. DickSubmit Comment
After Google announced its Nexus One phone, family members of sci-fi author Philip K Dick immediately got in touch with their lawyers to figure out if they have a case against the company.

They believe that the device's name infringes on Dick's 1968 novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep," which was used as the basis for the 1982 cult film "Blade Runner," about a bounty hunter chasing androids known as Nexus-6 models.

"[Google has its] Android operating system, and now they are naming a phone 'Nexus One,'" said Dick's daughter. "It's not lost on the people who are somewhat familiar with this novel."

Attorneys who specialize in trademark disputes don't see a clear-cut case. One key issue is whether consumers are likely to be confused and think Dick's estate was associated with Google's phone.

Here is an idea, throw this bullsh*t case out.

Did Mortal Kombat: Deception infringe on Phillip K. d*ck because it had a place called Nexus?

...and did Lindsay Lohan infringe on the property because her hole is referred to as "the Nexus" by all that have been there?!?

What a d*ck. I wonder how the "Star Trek: Generations" lawsuit turned out.

I hate sh*tty unartistic moves like this. While it may not be a direct violation it is harping on the sci-fi fame of d*ck's ideas to sell to a certain crowd and thus is weak.

I have a feeling they are just trying to get their name out there and try to make a few mil off of Google......heroin doesn't pay for itself you know.

You've got to be kidding me? If they had called the phone "Nexus 6" I could understand their concern but it seems as if any number after the word Nexus is grounds for a lawsuit?

I find it funny how there can be two completely different things, and someone makes a lawsuit. Sure, d*ck's novel was a Sci-fi novel, but it's not like Google is making a story about it's Nexus unit. Google is releasing a piece of technology, not fiction.

Hell, if I wrote fiction about a piece of technology that wasn't created, and someone named a real item after it, that would rock.
