Is Marvel Working on "Smallville"-Type TV Series and Doctor Strange Movie?Submit Comment
Stan Lee spoke to MTV News about which of its 5,000 characters Marvel is working on bringing to the big screen. "Doctor Strange I'm sure will be out," he said. "You probably know they're working on Ant-Man now."

Lee continued: "Every one of the Marvel characters, there's somebody working on it. Somebody is trying to put together a story that will work. It's just a matter of time they can only do so many a year. You don't want to flood the market. I'm sure [they'll do] the Black Panther, eventually."

For now, Disney is focusing on using the characters for other things than movies, maybe even a "Smallville"-type show. "Instead of making a $200 million movie and kind of betting the farm on one character, you can develop a television pilot, a television series," said Disney's chief executive Bob Iger.

This makes a lot of sense ... but this will most likely fail when translated from script to camera, unless Spidey thor Iron man and hulk make cameos and the TV show is not focused on one character but all of the Marvel Universe!

'Smallville type show' - so, 9 years on TV without any character development (beyond Supes learning that he has 'Super-Sneezes!'... and he still CAN'T fly) or story advancement?

Zzzzz...

Never got the whole Dr. Strange thing...always seemed kinda creepy to me...in a pedophile kind of way.

Is Smallville still on the air? I'm not talking about reruns.

A smallville-type show? could be good depending on who they do. But dont do spiderman because hes been used too much lately and they must do the show for someone else, Moonknight perhaps

This sounds like a bad idea for some reason. There is enormous potential to screw the pooch on this one.

Soooo Jaba was there a Dr. Strange kind of guy trying to give you some strange or what?

@Horror - ol.

And yes, Smallville is still on (ugh!). It looked very promising at the very beginning of this season (seemed like they finally got the pickle out of their ass and were going to dive into the real beginning of Superman)... but alas, only a few episodes into it this year, and they were back to their usual: 1 episode on message, 2 episodes (min.) = WTF episodes.

Done right, Captain America should be the best movie Marvel has to offer in my opinion. If it's done right that is..

X-Men 1st Class would do so much better as a show than a movie. Look to Smallville as all that was done wrong, and do it right and they'd have a hit on their hands, Mainstream and cultish....

They should make a Star Fox-movie...
rabid writes:

We already know that Black Panther is being developed for Nickelodeon, by the people who write the Boondocks. I haven't heard of any other properties. A Marvel Knights tv show would be great, but I don't think Stan Lee really knows of what he speaks.
If they were smart, they'd create their own tv network. They have enough material to air as it is.
johnny_boy writes:

I say do a captain America series if it'll be like smallville. It would have a "24" feel to it with him fighting terrorist. If they went with a hero with powers, they're budget would be screwed cuz of adding the special effects therefore making the show suck. With CA all you need is a physically fit guy and no need to add much special effects. Plus throw in cameos as well.

Iron man: The Alloy Years
Ghost Rider: The lawsuit origins
OR Put War Machine and Iron man on Pandora and each week they hunt down another annoying CGI character
week 1 - Avatar blue things
week 2 - Jar Jar
week 3 - I Robots
week 4 - Buzz Lightyear (part 1)

They could write a series around JJJ - he interacts with heaps of the Marvel universe.

Doctor Strange is a badass, one of the best Marvel characters invented. The translation to the big screen could mean big bucks, if given to a competent director.
Dfresh writes:

I think the best way to introduce new characters is to create a Marvel Channel. Its not like Disney cant afford it. Run Marvel cartoons in the morning and instead of stupid music videos in place of commercials show a 2 minute digital short featuring a new character kicking someones arse! After say 6pm or 7 start showing the Marvel Movies. THey could the a Smallvile type show on that channel as well. I knw my son would rather watch a Marvel Channel than the disney channel.

J.A.Ottley writes:

Hmmmmm this sounds interesting a lot of Marvel Franchises could be done Smallville style...

And to all that stated that Doctor Strange is badass, but hard to transition on to screen and obviously needs a faithful writer and a director, both whom must be fans of the source material...

I'm with you guys :D
rabid writes:

The animated Dr. Strange film sold terribly, as did the original 70's Dr. Strange film. They're probably pretty apprehensive about using that character.
But they shouldn't be. All it needs is a great budget and the classic storyline. It's all the updates they make that ruin the character.
