Domestic Box Office to Break $10 Billion Milestone

Domestic Box Office to Break $10 Billion MilestoneSubmit Comment
Even though America is currently going through a recession, the domestic ticket sales for 2009 are still up 8% over 2008 and will likely break the $10 billion mark for the first time ever.

Through Sunday, box office revenue was $9.48 billion, only $175 million short of breaking the $9.65 record set in 2008. Most sources believe that the record will definitely be broken and the $10 billion mark will be reached, since studios are still waiting to release "Sherlock Holmes," "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squekuel" and James Cameron's "Avatar."

Going to the movies has been considered cheap entertainment. And history shows that the more families are struggling financially, the more they will skip vacations and restaurants and settle for going to the theaters.

The funny thing is that even though studios are also bringing in record-breaking profits, they are having a tough time coming up with marketing dollars since most of the money earned goes to save their parent companies. Universal Pictures has GE to take care of, while Warner Bros has Time Warner, and Paramount Pictures has Viacom.

All that revenue and yet no originality. I'm tired of them retroing movies like Jordans.

Well... here's a classic example as to why Hollywood doesn't need to go through the expense of making really original, higher-end pics. All these reboots, re-hash, re-do's sell just fine. Sequel something to death... it sells. We all ask for better stuff (and granted, most of what is offered is pretty/really good), but were I in the biz... I wouldn't go out of my way to make the next Braveheart, when I could just crank out another Transformers (Shia and Megan are cheap... the rest of the 'actor's don't only exist on a computer) to make $60mil. a flick like Bay does. I'd be like the rest and just crank out the sh*t that pays (and so does the audience).

Surprised Princess and the Frog wasn't mentioned. I have a feeling that movie will make bank. All the Tyler Perry fans and Disney fans will go see it.
