Director Paul Greengrass Exits "Bourne 4"

Director Paul Greengrass Exits "Bourne 4"Submit Comment
We've been hearing about the fourth "Bourne" movie for quite a while, with both Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass very excited about returning. And even though George Nolfi has already handed in a script, Universal Pictures went on to hire Josh Zetumer to pen what the studio calls "a parallel script."

Now, The Playlist has learned that while Greengrass was working on "Green Zone," Universal didn't bother mentioning to him that they have brought on a second writer to put together a new "Bourne" script. That didn't make Greengrass happy, but that's only the beginning.

The studio funded "Green Zone" to keep the director happy between "Bourne" films. But Greengrass quickly escalated the budget for "Zone" to $100 million and will likely bring it up to $150 million when everything is done. As a result, Universal has been forced to get involved to keep the spending under control.

So now that Greengrass has been left out of the loop during the hiring of a "Bourne 4" writer and has been pressured to abide by Universal's rule, he has decided to exit the fourth "Bourne" movie, citing "creative differences."

Some believe that the studio and the director could eventually put these things aside and get back to work, but that's very unlikely. The one thing that could make Universal bend over backwards for Greengrass is the fact that Damon is very loyal to the director. So, if Universal loses one, they lose the other.

Well that sucks, hope they work this out, cause we could all use another Bourne movie.

So...does that mean fans can hopefully expect for the next Bourne movies to be shot in focus?

Matt has said he would bend over for Greengrass.

I never thought I would say this but I think this is a good thing. Lets face facts, Bourne Ultimatum was awesome and one hell of a way to end the series (as was originally intended). Why bother risking a fourth movie (which there was never a book written for by Robert Ludlum) and which is already struggling with in the writing process?
Dont risk ruining the series just to make a buck, if you want to see more movies like Bourne, fine, hire a couple good writers to make a completely original story with Damon and Greengrass teaming up for a kickass story, but leave the Bourne series alone.

The first two Bounre movies were decent, but it all fell apart in the third. This is one franchise to let die.

@kmccarney: while I agree that the thing should be allowed to die, I don't think the books should be cited as a reason. I didn't get around to reading Supremacy or Ultimatum, but at least as far as the first book goes, basically only the names and a few of the locations were used...MOST of the story in the first book was absent from the movie (literally, just about all of it). I wouldn't scream bloody murder if they made a Bourne movie without a basis-in-book since I believe none of them were ever based-in-book.

Paging MR. Liman, then. He and Greengrass could just go back and forth doing the films then. Hell, Liman said in 2002 that he would direct Bourne sequels and as such he hasn't done that yet. Here's his chance. Just sub for Greengrass and let Greeengrass pick it up if there's a fifth.
