Director Reveals Original "Monster's Inc" Story PitchPosted: November 14th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Director Pete Docter participated in a Creative Screenwriting Magazine podcast, revealing the original pitch for Pixar's "Monsters, Inc" that's very different from the actual movie.
Docter's pitch: "My idea was that it was about a 30 year old man who is an accountant or something. He hates his job. And one day he gets a book with some drawings, that he did when he was a kid, from his mom. He doesn't think anything of it, he puts it on the shelf and that night, monsters show up. And nobody else can see them."
"He thinks he's starting to go crazy. They follow him to his job, and on his dates, and it turns out that these monsters are fears that he never dealt with as a kid. And each one of them represents a different kind of fear. As he conquers those fears, the guys who he slowly becomes friends with, they disappear as he conquers those fears. It's this bittersweet ending where they go away."
Sounds like a great idea for a Pixar movie, but Docter admits that "it sounds better as a pitch."

@ wonderBOY - aus = Australia? I'm moving there in a few months!
This pitch seems like it could be an entirely different pixar film. they could totally still push forward with it. Or get Spike Jonze to direct it and make a pretty kick ass feature.

Yeah, Dandy, get Spike Jonze to direct it and then have the studio screw with it for two years cause it's too scary for kids

Pixar at the time could not do that kind of movie. Its only UP that has actually sparked Pixar to actually consider that kind of movie. The original idea for monsters inc sounds incredible. Hope they consider something along those line later on.

Sounds somewhat like a Pixar version of Flatliners, which was a pretty good movie. I'd watch this pitch if they made it.
