More on Hugh Jackman's "Real Steel" Robot Boxing Movie

While promoting the "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" DVD/Blu-ray, director Shawn Levy spoke to Sci-Fi Wire about his upcoming "Real Steel" film, which is a robot boxing movie starring Hugh Jackman (Wolverine).

"Hugh Jackman plays a former boxer who can therefore no longer do the only thing he was ever good at and has to make his way in this new world," said Levy. "It's faithful to the story in that that story was very much about a down-on-his-luck, slightly desperate journeyman who works in this robot boxing sport and who is desperately needing redemption and one last shot. The movie is more Rocky than Transformers."

And regarding the robots, the director added: "They are most definitely not Transformers, not Terminators, definitely not WALL-Es, either. These are human-built, human-scale fighting machines. They are built for human spectacle. People in this movie have gotten bored with human carnage and human violence. So in the quest for more, more, more, this sport has evolved to this."

Even though, Levy is mostly known for comedies like "The Pink Panther" and "Cheaper by the Dozen," he couldn't refuse the opportunity to direct "Real Steel" after Steven Spielberg approached him with it.

Why did Spielberg approach this guy with those kind of films to his name?

Remember Robot Wars and another show under a different name... same format though. One was an American production and the other from the UK.

That was some good entertainment there.

This write-up left out the cornball stuff of the article when was first heard about this a while ago. I believe the robot Jackman works on... has something of a 'spirit' (ugh!) that embraces his 2nd. chance at life (same as Jackman's character), and cleans up in the ring.

This could end up being really good.

Sort of good/bad Starship Troopers style.

Or go completely Lohan.

This could actually be pretty good. Maybe the robots have knives and an assorment of weapons in their arms.

Maybe they will try practical effects for the robots as well, which would be interesting to watch.

Plus, its got Hugh Jackman.

I like how they said it's true to the original story....what original story I didint know rockem sockem robots had a story...

The original story was written by Richard Matheson. It was then turned into a pretty awesome Twilight Zone episode starring Lee Marvin.

I can't say I'm excited to have it directed by this dude though.
