JJ Abrams Developing "Micronauts" Film, Based on Toy LinePosted: November 6th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
In an article about toys getting the big screen treatment, The Wall Street Journal mentioned that JJ Abrams (Star Trek) is in-talks to produce a movie about the Micronauts, a Japanese toy line that was recently acquired by Hasbro.
First released in Japan in 1974, Microman toys were imported to the United States by the Mego Corporation in 1976 under the "Micronauts" name. The line consisted of 3.75-inch tall action figures, vehicles, robots, play sets, and accessories which used a universal, five millimeter inter-connective design. Although deemed a success, Mego cancelled the Micronauts line in 1980.
The toys were also turned into comic books published Marvel Comics, Image Comics, and Devil's Due Publishing. Their first comic appearance was in "Micronauts #1" by Marvel in January, 1979.
Abrams told the newspaper that those who doubt whether a board game or science-fiction toy can become stars, will be proven wrong.
"Sometimes, when someone is not a celebrity and you are casting them in a role, everyone who is in a seat of authority voices questions about that actor's talent, sex appeal, looks, ability -- their everything," he says. "But then they get the role, and suddenly they are on the cover of every magazine, and nobody questions those things again. In retrospect, everyone says, 'Of course that person is a star.'"

Hey, can't be that bad with J.J. Abrams, right? Look what happened to the recent films from Hasbro. They got ripped to shit this summer.

This sounds incredibly lame. I suppose he deserves the benefit of the doubt since he managed to make a fun and enjoyable Star Trek film (something that, before the prequel, was all but lost). Not only that, he gave us Lost, which I believe is one of the finest TV shows ever made.
Let's just hope he knows what he's doing.....
