DVD Preview – Superman Day (11/28)Submit Comment
If you are a Superman fanatic, this is the day that you have been waiting for. First, let's start with the latest blockbuster that revived the franchise, "Superman Returns." Bryan Singer's take on the superhero received a rather lukewarm reception at the box-office as it was easily outperformed by the likes of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" or "X-Men: The Last Stand." Still, it's worth checking out, either as a single-disc edition or a Deluxe 2-disc set.

Additionally, Warner Bros. has decided to put out the entire Superman movie series, with each title getting a special edition. The original, and still the best, "Superman: The Movie," now has a Special Edition that's a whopping 4-disc set. "Superman II" gets a 2-disc Special Edition, while parts III and IV get single-disc deluxe editions. If you want to own all four of these in one shot, there's "The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection." If you want to throw in the latest "Superman Returns" into the mix as well, there's the "Superman Ultimate Collectors Edition." The real treat, however, is the long-awaited release of "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut," which is also included in the latter collection. For those that do not know, the first installment in the series was directed by Donner, who then took over the duties for the sequel as well. Although he finished the film, the studio decided to scrap half of his work and have Richard Lester tinker with it more to their liking. Up until now, Donner's version has been unavailable commercially, although some bootleg copies have been rumored to be circulating. The new release offers a drastically different and very interesting take on the sequel from the one we are familiar with.

Not to be outdone, director Kevin Smith has two releases of his own. First, there's his successful comedy "Clerks II," which revisits the familiar characters and locations of his first, breakthrough hit, ten years later. Second, there's "An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder," where the filmmaker once again gets into lengthy discussions about his work in Q&A sessions with fans, this time in London and Toronto.

A couple more all new releases hit stores today. The CGI animated film "The Ant Bully," which features the voices of such superstars as Nicolas Cage, Paul Giamatti, Julia Roberts, and Meryl Streep, underperformed at the box-office, but should prove to be a great rental. Meanwhile, one of the many generic horror flicks that populate the screens recently, "See No Evil," should entertain many eager teenagers that still have not been thrilled enough. The flick stars WWE wrestler Glen Jacobs, AKA Kane, as an unstoppable killer after a group of… teens, of course.

A couple of re-releases might be worth checking out as well. The crazy comedy "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" gets a Special Edition that features new, unrated footage. The release will coincide with the upcoming sequel "The Rise of Taj," which hits theaters December 1st. Disney's classic, but somewhat flawed 1973 animated film "Robin Hood" gets the DVD treatment with a solid "Most Wanted Edition."

Plenty of television shows are hitting the DVD shelves as well. Here's what you can now own or rent:
7th Heaven - The Complete Third Season
Bones - Season One
Ellen: The Complete Season 5
Flavor Of Love: The Complete Second Season
Jamie Kennedys Blowin Up - The Complete First Season
Joan Of Arcadia: The Second Season
Thundercats: Season Two - Volume Two
Touched By An Angel: The Third Season - Volume One
Touched By An Angel: The Third Season - Volume Two
