Martin Landau Not Interested in "Mission: Impossible 4" CameoPosted: October 30th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

The actors of the original 1960's "Mission: Impossible" TV series are not happy about the movies based on their show. Martin Landau, who played super-spy Rollin Hand in the series, was offered a cameo in JJ Abrams' third installment, but "he had no interest in doing it," said Abrams.
MTV News caught up with Landau to get the whole story, which apparently goes back all the way to the first film. He said: "When they were working on an early incarnation of the first one – not the script they ultimately did – they wanted the entire team to be destroyed, done away with one at a time, and I was against that."
Landau continued: "It was basically an action-adventure movie and not 'Mission.' 'Mission' was a mind game. The ideal mission was getting in and getting out without anyone ever knowing we were there. So the whole texture changed. Why volunteer to essentially have our characters commit suicide? I passed on it. I said, 'It's crazy to do this.' The script wasn't that good either!"
Now that a fourth installment is being planned, would Landau reconsider being apart of it? "Unless it was a great part, which it probably isn't, it would probably be a cameo, a little joke, that wouldn't interest me at all," he said.

Well you can't win here really. If they took the original characters and recast them we'd never here the end of how better the original cast was...then when they change the mould and the characters we bitch about how it isn't faithful to the original...
...ya can't win- but MI:3 was definitely on the right track to making the series plausible as well as unbelievable. The first overdoses on its own muddled plot and the second is just a guilty pleasure...but the third was putting it on a good track to finally finding itself.
Like the Transporter series, execs just can't figure out a tone for this thing.
