"District 9" Director to Take on "Dune"?

"District 9" Director to Take on "Dune"?Submit Comment
Not too long ago screenwriter Josh Zetumer, who is also writing the new Jason Bourne film, turned in his epic 175-page draft of the new "Dune" film for director Peter Berg (Hancock). At the time, Berg said that he and Zetume will try to "beat the script into something manageable without offending the purists."

Now, Pajiba is reporting that Berg and his Film 44 production company have backed out of the project, leaving Paramount desperate to find a new director to replace him.

There are currently two helmers at the top of the studio's list, Neill Blompkamp (District 9) and Neil Marshall (The Descent). Paramount wants to develop "Dune" for under $175 million and are leaning toward Blompkamp rather than Marshall, considering how well "District 9" turned out for only $30 million.

"Dune" is a priority for Paramount, so expect some more news soon. And if you're upset that Berg dropped out, you should know that he was in talks with Robert Pattinson (Twilight) to star.

Well....

If anybody could do a proper Dune movie, it'd be blomkamp

David Lynch would be great :-)

David Lynch's version is one of my favorite movies of all time. I just don't know if they can compress the story enough to make it come in at an acceptable time for the average movie-goer and keep it true for the "purists". Make it two or three 90-120min movies and I'll be okay with this. Berg and Pattinson - terrible idea. Neill Blomkamp is at the top of a very short list of directors I would trust with this material.

Didn't Blompkamp say he doesn't want to make big budget films because of the restrictions it puts on him creatively? He would have to make something studio approved rather then him having the freedom to make it how he sees fit.

@osirus

I would imagine that he would only do a big budget movie if the studio listened and agreed with his script/sypnosis.

Thank God Pete Berg left the project. I don't know, I don't really love him as a filmmaker, so him being on board a film that could actually be done right made me nervous (as Hanc*ck and most of The Kingdom blew). If he was in talks for Pattinson to star he should have been booted off it for sure. Either of the two choices they want to give it to seem to be major upgrades, so I'm liking this news.

Let's see how good this Blomkamp is.

This story to to big for the big screen it belongs in a mini series format or as a trilogy. Trying to condence this in one 2 or 21/2 hr movie will ruin it.
If the studios were really taking this seriously they wouldnt have considered Berg or doing just one film.
How about the other Dune tales like; children, messiah, etc.....
Lots of story, action, sex, and intrigue here.

@dre-el....right on. The first Dune sucked because they tried too hard to fit it all in. I don't know, maybe it's a little too old for today's Twighlight generation. It's a great story though.

what's "Dune"?

I know a lot of people hate it .. but it would be much better to take on The Butlerian Jihad etc as a trilogy. Far easier for people to get their heads around - Rise of the Machines and all that .. no to mention emerging sectarian violence.
