JRR Tolkien is the Fifth Highest Earning Dead CelebrityPosted: October 28th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Forbes magazine has released a lit of the top thirteen dead celebrities, based on how much their estates earned from their works between October 2008 and October 2009.
Taking fifth place is JRR Tolkien, the author of the "Lord of the Rings" books. The money apparently came from the continued sales of the books and the settlement between New Line Cinema and the Tolkien estate regarding the "LOTR" movie earnings.
Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) took eighth place with $15 million, while Michael Crichton ended up in tenth with $9 million. The families of all three authors can expect big checks once again next year, since Hollywood is currently developing new movies based on their properties.
Entire list:
1. Yves Saint Laurent: $350 million 2. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein: $235 million (combined) 3. Michael Jackson: $90 million 4. Elvis Presley: $55 million 5. J.R.R. Tolkien: $50 million 6. Charles Schulz: $35 million 7. John Lennon: $15 million 8. Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel): $15 million 9. Albert Einstein: $10 million 10. Michael Crichton: $9 million 11. Jimi Hendrix: $8 million 12. Aaron Spelling: $8 million 13. Andy Warhol: $6 million

I wonder if Richard and Oscar are a bit nervous having Michael Jackson right behind them like that?

I don't understand why this article's title is about JRR Tolkien, its not like he's the most famous or popular person on this list

I don't know if it's really fair that Michael Jackson is put on here. Yes he may have made $90 million between October 2008 and October 2009, but in between October 2008 and June 25, 2009 he was still alive.

Tolkien had the biggest movies based on his books of anyone on the list, that's why the movie website used his name for the article
