Mark Millar's "Superman" Trilogy Could Still Happen?

Posted: October 28th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

On his official site, Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass) was talking about "Superman Red Son," which is his graphic novel that wonders what would happen if Superman landed in Communist Russia rather than the US. Then he added: "WB been talking to me about Superman again too, btw. Heh heh heh. More later..."

It's not clear what he meant, but it sounds like Millar may still be pushing his "Superman" movie trilogy again, but this time, Warner Bros is listening.

He previously revealed his idea: "I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers."

Millar was able to attach director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Kick-Ass) to the project and has spent a good amount of time pitching it to WB. We've heard that the studio is no longer pursuing another "Superman" installment, but it seems that they are still planning something. It may not be Millar's idea since WB can't user Superman's origins, but something. Stay tuned.

I really like the idea of making Superman an actual SUPER MAN, but i think they need to get the rights to his origin, kryptonite and pretty much every other important element of Superman if they are to go with Millars 3-picture epic.

Have Lex Luthor play a major role, but at the same time keep in some awesome fight scenes between super powered titans.

Put simply: Millar should really bring Superman to film.

If they are just making one film though, stop Lex Luthor, stop the origins and just have Superman fight some badass alien. A real battle of the titans.

interesting way to end a trilogy to say the least... but thanks for spoiling it you dumbass

Red Son would be truly epic to see on the screen. But people might have a hard time understanding the concept of Elseworlds, and more importantly a Soviet Superman.
I still wouldn't mind seeing a Lex Luthor solo movie based on Man of Steel, where Superman is portrayed as the antagonist.

I would like to see this. A new take on Superman on the big screen could be epic.

Does anyone even care about new Superman movies?

Kick-Ass is going o open a ton of doors for Millar but I really hope he doesn't get a blank check to do whatever he wants with Superman. Although the Red Son story was amazing,it will not translate over well on screen. You just can't do a What If / Elseworlds type movie no matter how iconic the character is.
Superman is the biggest and most recognizable superhero ever and has had the worst deal in being portrayed in he movies. Inthe comics, he has an ton of foes he has stood up against but has only dealt with Luthor onscreen in every sinle movie. That to me is a flat out disgrace.
Imagine if every Batman flick from Keaton to Bale that came out had the Joker as his foe in every one? Or if each Spiderman flick had him ging up against Green Goblin every time? People would be enraged.
So why is it that Superman has to suffer this?
I say screw the origin bs, go big.
If Millar wants to do a trilogy, have Superman go at some of his biggest foes. I thinkonly in a Superman movie does the concept of havin multiple villains actually works.
I would not suggest the Doomsday / Death storyline since that would either take a major and unwelcome retooling or it would have to include all the other icnic DC characters which would be too much.
But have Superman face Bizzaro, Brainic, Darkseid. Give him somethin to do other than savin Lois, or stopping Luthor.

This Supes won't fly...

Although I like the story. Americans don't honor stuff in the theaters that doesn't have (Spidey) hanging from a flagpole with a huge flag (Saving Private Ryan - Supes flying with the flag in the Reeves movies). American's will flock to this like they did the movie 'Australia.' Commie Russia just won't sell tickets.

That + Supes would leave Earth if the sun was turning red in exchange for another solar system with a yellow sun.

Too bad. It's a hugely interesting storyline.

@vw - please, please for the LOVE OF GOD no MORE Luthor!!!!! No MORE wet spot for Lois. Those avenues of story have beaten that dog to a pulp... for decades!

I don't think these films have anything to do with Red son,the article just says that it's taken from an event where Millar was talking about Red Son then went on to talk about the studios intrest in his Triolgy idea.I remember hearing about the same triolgy a year or so ago but it got shelved.I say do it,Millar can't put a foot wrong imo.

Warlord, it was animated instead. It's still pretty damn good. It's called Public Enemies.

"WB been talking to me about Superman again too, btw. Heh heh heh. More later..."

..and from this blurb- this tiny ambiguous sentence-you somehow feel it sounds like he's pushing his trilogy? You need a job at
TMZ. Most writers wait for people to ACTUALLY do something before calling it news....because...well...news isn't NEWS unless it kinda...well...HAPPENS.

If you visit Millarworld regularly, you'd know he's been busted out for lying several times about his dealings with WB. Personally, I think he just knows the WB guys on a friendly level and that nothing official has ever taken place. Also Millar never EVER pitches. He signs the contract first, and only then delivers his script.
So no, none of this crap is happening, but it would be silly to presume WB isn't eyeballing Superman for another film. He's a cash cow waiting to be milked (so long as Singer's kept far from the project).

Red Son was a really cool "What if?" book, just to see what would happen if Supes landed in Moscow instead of Kansas.
DoucheNozzle writes:

Yeah, the death of Superman story, if done right, could work out beautifully on film, but I doubt they do that first. Other than that, have Supes battle Darkseid or Braniac, films with Supes fighting them could be very cool if they get the right filmmaker. Oh, Jon Hamm for Superman! Nash out.
PrevalentMind writes:

More than likely Millar is in talks for more animated films on his properties. WB hates his trilogy idea for the live action, but they know that his titles are very fitting for the animated quick flicks they push to DVD. I could easily see Red Son becoming a 70 minute animated flick from Warner Premiere.
vwkombi writes:

@ Ranger

ONLY if they are going with Millars 3 picture epic should they add in Lois and Luthor, since this would be the definitive Supes adaption and they are a pretty crucial part of his mythology.

But if it's just going to be another Superman Returns, throw in Doomsday or War World or something f*ckin' awesome!
