Plane Hijacked During "Amelia" ShootPosted: October 24th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
While filming her "Amelia" movie, starring Hilary Swanks, director Mira Nair needed lots of props, including one of the actual Lockheed Elektras planes that Amalia Earhart actually flew. But she had no idea that getting the plane from France to the South African set would be such a disaster.
Nair tells WENN: "We located this Elektra in the south of France from this wonderful family called the Shabers, who agreed to fly it to us across the entire continent of Africa.
The Elektra runs on Aveo gas, which is not a gasoline you get now and it was almost like flying it in Amelia's time. You have to keep landing for extra fuel.
At one time they radioed down to a country - I won't mention the name - and asked if they had fuel and they said, 'No,' and then said, 'Oh, yes we do.' The Elektra landed there and the family was surrounded by 15 soldiers and taken hostage for one and a half days. They demanded $13,000 and we had to fly in $13,000.
They called the French embassy in that country and the French embassy called the producers and we wired the money. We were literally hijacked and the plane arrived 24 hours before the scenes had to be shot. It had to be polished and, oh my God, it was a big saga."

It was probably a guerilla coalition of lesbians who are disturbed that the film turns Amelia into a heterosexual.

Hahaha, every time I see Swank mentioned now I think of "The Office" episode where they debate whether she is attractive or not the whole episode. Good times!

@rabid. You got it! Amelia was a lesbian and the film wants to make her out to be some sort of love torned femme fatale. Read the true story Hollywood. Plus, Swank is a great actress no doubt, even with those giant horse-teeth. But she can't save this movie.

@BayHarbor_Butcher Hopefully, you were the only one who thought that the COUNTRY of Africa hijacked the plane. You may be joking but I hate it when people (especially the former "leader of the free world") refer to the continent of Africa as one country. It probably was an african country seeing as how the plane traveled from France to South Africa, but you're still killing me, Smalls!
