Tim Powers' book "On Stranger Tides" was optioned by Disney many years ago, and the studio is now using it as the basis for their upcoming fourth installment in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

Powers' novel tells the tale of "Jack Shandy" Chandagnac, who is the son of a British puppeteer who gave up the family marionette tradition after his father died destitute. He sets sail for Jamaica to find the nefarious uncle who stole his father's rightful inheritance but en route he is captured by pirates who practice sorcery -- they give him the choice of joining their ranks or execution. Soon he reluctantly falls into service to Blackbeard, who is on a quest to locate the Fountain of Youth.

Powers has now spoken to LA Times about how he thinks his book will be adapted. "I've watched all the movies several times and I think the clear thing they would use is the trip to the Fountain of Youth," he said.

"My main character doesn't overlap with Jack Sparrow at all [in personality or circumstance]; they're totally different characters. I suppose they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard. The only thing I feel certain they will hold on to is the Fountain of Youth since they telegraphed that at the end of the last movie."

Screenwriter Terry Rosio told Empire: "We wanted to do a story about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth, and Tim Powers wrote a book about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth... it just turns out that to do that story you would need that book. It's a brilliant and Tim Powers is an amazing writer - and it's a great title. It allows us to draw material from that universe and his expertise. I don't know if its proper to say [the film is] based on [the book] but there are enough common elements to think that the book had to be optioned to us to reasonably proceed along that story line."

@Kirk - agreed. Depp owned this franchise from the inside out. Just let them replace him and the DVD will go straight into the $2.95 bin with RoboCop sequel... ahh... ANY!

@ vwkombi...don't worry man...hillbillies can't type lol...just like the way bay was being racist when he uses the twins in transformers 2 'no we don't really do much readin'...isn't it funny how back then, bullies used to give nerds so much sh*t about the internet...what the bullies didn't know, which obviously makes them more stupid, is this: 'american pie' the internet scene with nadia...so yea bullies are *ssholes

I might actually watch it if they use someone other than Jack Sparrow. I really wouldn't mind a Pirates series that changes tales with each incarnation.

Sorry but I hate Johnny Depp, he used to be good, "Nick of Time", "Blow" or "Whats eating Gilbert Grape", but now he is either a meth addict pirate or a pale shemale.

PEACE!

They need to find a bankable actor to replace depp. Depp did an excellent job carrying the first three, but with the new three, they need a new person to carry the load. Johnny D. is a great actor, and should have a role in the fourth, but what's going to make the new series is a new actor. I wouldn't want to see Depp in three more of these. They should totally include G. Rush in them though. I could almost see Ewan McGregor taking it over, or someone like that.

I just hope Depp doesn't end up with AIDS, like Zac Efron!

depp's not bad...i'd much rather watch him as jack sparrow than see another disappointing x-men movie or remake of some stupid sh*t with new actors that i can't even credit...didn't he reprise his role from fear and loathing in las vegas a year ago?...a doc*mentary on hunter s. thompson?...he's still got it...you know what will happen?...they will either recast someone else for jack sparrow...or they won't use jack sparrow at all...either way wouldn't work for me...all it needed was a better story and jack sparrow comes off looking great...maybe then can be a bit more realistic about that if they had jack sparrow and barbossa talking and doing things with black beard...i'd like to see that
victor arroyo writes:

They need to bring back the first Jack Sparrow, they always do this in Hollywood, they make a good movie and then they try to top it by putting 10 000 times the jokes that worked in the first project. "Spider man", "the mummy", etc. I hate that. I know why they do it but sh*t! be creative.
And I hated the giant calypso. Loved Davy Jones.

@synthetic1985:

1. The Mask (Jim Carry)
2. The Mummy (Rachel Wise)
3. Home Alone (Macaulay Culkin)
4. Adams Family (every one)
5. Butterfly Effect (Ashton Kutcher)
6. Walking Tall (The Rock)
7. XXX (Vin Diesel)
8. the fast and the furious tokyo (everyone)

They can not change the actors, they can reboot, but they can't change the actors.

PEACE!
