Update: "Seabiscuit" Director to Helm "Venom" Spin-Off?

Update: "Seabiscuit" Director to Helm "Venom" Spin-Off?Submit Comment
Gary Ross is currently writing the fourth "Spider-Man" movie for Columbia Pictures. He is also writing the "Venom" spin-off, based on the villain from "Spider-Man 3."

THR has learned that Ross may end up directing "Venom," making it his third helming project after Tobey Maguire-starrers "Pleasantville" and "Seabiscuit." No word on whether Topher Grace ("That 70s Show") will reprise his role.

Up until now, we've been hearing that "Zombieland" writers have been working on the script for "Venom." In fact, about two weeks ago, they said that Columbia has two of their drafts. I guess the studio decided to head in a slightly different direction, or maybe Ross was hired to do a re-write.

Update: Variety got their hands on a quick summary of the new movie.

Venom, an archenemy of the webslinger in the Marvel Comics series, will be transformed into an antihero who becomes a defender of the innocent.

Agreed, agreed, disagreed.

'Ed Wood' was arguably the last Tim Burton movie to include a plot.

Come on, SpookyCupcakes, Sweeney Todd was pretty damn good, even if one doesn't like musicals.

I understand you, though, as Burton has been descending into mediocrity for quite a while.

Oh yeah, Sweeney Todd, that was based off of a musical stage play to begin with!

why would topher grace come back? hes been killed off.we all seen him get blown up along with his symbiote. only way there could really be a spin off is if another symbiote somehow landed and bonded with another person who takes the alias Venom. but even that sounded stupid and i thought of it.this movie just aint gonna work.

i can see this happening, but like a "lets take a wrestler and make him act" type thing...although brock lesnar is a doucher, he resembles eddie brock after prison IMO. he's monstrous and has a crazy stare. but other than that...it'll be another sh*t movie like the rest of the superhero movies that've come out recently (excluding iron man, which was good).

They need to drop Topher Grace, and punch Tim Burton in the face if he comes within 100 feet of the set. I like the guy, but he's no Venom director, unless you want a camp version.

Awful. This movie wont work with Venom being an Antihero.
ACTIONFIGURE writes:

Question...How the f*ck will you bring him back?? Was he not vaporized at the end of that sh*tty movie that had "Spider-man" in the title??
eViL.kEv2 writes:

NO. Please, NO. Why are they going to set themselves up for another failure? How f*cking out of touch with the fans are these people?

Venom IS an anti-hero in the comic books. Eddie and the symbiote both shared, at times, a desire to protect innocent people from all harm. He's only against Spider-Man and Carnage.

from my knowledge...it was spiderman that venom had a problem with...but then that all changes when carnage comes into the picture and even threatens gwen stacy...and then venom and spiderman team up....i just don't see why they can't put that into a spiderman movie instead of trying to milk all the money they can out of this franchise

Gwen Stacy has been dead for years by the time the symbiotes come on the scene. Historically Venom wasn't always a bad guy, it's the suit driving him insane. The suit feeds off of adrenaline, making the wearer over-emotional. The suit is in love with Spider-man since he is the only host it has ever tasted that it will not use up. Most humans will not feed it for long before being used up, but Brock has a type of cancer that overstimulates his adrenal gland, so the symbiote can feed without killing him and at the same time keep his cancer in check.
But in the end, Spidey is the tastiest morsel, and the symbiote will always try to latch back onto him.

@rabid not coming from the comic book universe at all that's some good info for movie fans like myself who don't know

That's alot like wade wilson's cancer saving him from being over healed by the healing factor and exploding or some sh*t
rabid writes:

Yeah, well they'll probably use none of that interesting stuff in either Venom or Deadpool.
But oh well. I'm sure it will look cool.
