What's Happening with "Italian Job" Sequel?

About a year ago, we caught up with producer Donald De Line to find out about the status of "The Italian Job" sequel. He said that he's had talks with Paramount Pictures and is hoping to get the film going within a year. De Line added that even though the cast doesn't have it in their contracts to return for the sequel, they have all expressed interest in reprising their roles.

Well it's now a year later and there's still nothing happening. So ComingSoon got in touch with "Italian Job" director F. Gary Gray to see if he has heard anything. "I think it's really just about getting the material in the right place," he said. "Sequels are tough and you always want to top the original, and I think that's where the energy is being put into developing a script that is just as good, if not better, than the first."

He added that he would love the chance to direct the sequel. "If you're on a movie, it depends on scheduling, that whole thing, but I certainly hope so," Gray said. "I loved directing that movie. It was a lot of fun, and I think people would want to hang out with that crew again and go on another ride, definitely."

In other words, there is no script in place, no actors on board, and Paramount is not sure if it wants to develop another installment, even though the 2004 movie earned three times its $60 million budget.

Realistically, a sequel isn't needed. Even if they did do another, do they use minis again or do they use some other gimmicky whatever?!

The first was good. No need for a sequel though. It will play out like this.. One of the crew members crosses them AGAIN and they do the same thing all over again in brazil with go carts.
