Photo: Nicolas Cage as Superman in Tim Burton's "Superman Lives"

Photo: Nicolas Cage as Superman in Tim BurtonSubmit Comment
Back in 1998, Tim Burton was set to direct and Nicolas Cage was set to star in "Superman Lives," a project that Warner Bros eventually scrapped due to budget concerns. But before pulling the plug, the studio spent millions on pre-production work that included concept art and costume designs.

Today we have a look at Cage wearing a redesigned Superman suit. He is shown sporting long hair, similar to Superman's hairstyle after his rebirth in the comics, and a very bored look on his face. Check out the video below that contains several concept art pieces and a shot of Cage wearing the costume.

Another interesting bit of trivia about "Superman Lives," is that it was written by Kevin Smith, something that the "Clerks" director has talked about several times.

Editor's Note: We can't be sure that the photo is real, but both Mania and TimBurton.jp are claiming that it is.

I really hope that's a fake. From everything Kevin Smith, Tim Burton and Jon Peters have said, I always got the impression that Cage was cast and they didn't go much further along than some storyboards and costume designs. And Jon peters said he didn't want Superman to have a cape. It looks a little skinny for Cage also. The hair is pretty f*ckin funny though
triggax writes:

^Not a fake... those pictures are from the late 90's, when they were actually considering this film.. I heard Smith dropped out because the studio wanted to put flames on his boots and make his suit look, well, like it does up there... what a crock of sh*te..
Looks like an old embarrassing junior high halloween photo his mom took. Poor guy.

Now I know what Superman would look like if he smoked weed. Thanks Burton and Cage.

And I doubt that haircut has anything to do with the rebirth story arc. Nick Cage has that haircut in almost every movie he did in the 90's.

The Nic Cage image is Photoshop work definitely. The video shows it more clearly. It looks like an action figure that had Nic's head, neck and chest composited onto it. Look right at the bottom of the neck/chest line. See the blurry Blue? tell tale sign. It's sloppy work. Also look at the cape if you don't believe me that it is from an action figure... It's molded plastic.

Cause he directed f*cking Ed Wood and Batman Returns.. f*cking guy is amazing when hes on key... Worst director my ass...

On that note... To call Cage the worst actor ever is also a HELL of a stupid claim... If I drove down to hollywood right now and decided to do a movie, i would probably be pretty close to the worst actor ever... but apparently in Cages case, being the worst actor of all time garnishes you a f*cking OSCAR and 20 million dollar roles in some of the biggest films out there...
Why would any actor ever aspire to be anything but the WORST actor ever... Look where it got Cage... I hate that guy up there... with his snide little comments..

Superhero films are a genre in itself- and it's not Burton's. Burton has done some good stuff, but the superhero part of his resume- Sucks.

It always did- I'm questioning why Warner Bros. ever even considered Burton with Superman. Once again, I say another note of thanks to Mr. Nolan.

Burton was the first one on Earth to make a Batman that wasn't a joke. Burton for a Frankenstein remake, an episode of Darth Vader - give him all those dark scifi fantasy dark characters: yay.

Burton to make Superman (Superman is light), Burton to direct Toy Story, Burton to write a book for kids: nay.

For the guy who ran out of oxygen upon birth: Burton and co were gone on Batman 3 and of course Batman 4 also. Those two movies had reverted back to an Adam West style but, pumped with millions of dollars.

Sorry to break it to everybody, but Tim Burton was very much involved in "Batman Forever". He was the f*cking producer!!! I think he had a say in casting Val f*cking Kilmer, who was also Bob Cane's favorite on screen Batman. Look it up, "coldplayesence". What does that name mean anyway? You smell like a sh*tty Brit-Pop band? and Trig - what's wrong w/ "Returns" and "Ed Wood"? Two of my favorites right there. Most of Burton's other stuff blends together after a while. Except his "Planet of the Apes" sh*tfest

Dear "Armpit", please change your name to "*sshole" before looking up some facts and commenting on something you know nothing about. "Spiders are the fiercest killers in the animal kingdom" is a quote from "An Evening with Kevin Smith" - which is the movie PrevalentMind brought up. If you haven't seen or heard of it, you probably shouldn't talk about it. And for the last f*cking time, you schmuck, Tim Burton PRODUCED "Batman Forever"! It is a fact. You can not argue it. And for all the numb nuts d*cks out there that think they know sh*t about it.. Emily Schweber was the casting director on Batman Forever, Schumacher NEVER wanted Keaton for the role.. Tim Burton acted as an investor and THATS it.. nothing more.. Emily Schweber has worked on a countless number of Schumachers films..

BURTON HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CASTING OF VAL KILMER AND NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTUAL PRODUCTION OF THE FILM.

Trig - not that I care if you'd been a miscariage or that Needled*ck did miss on a few breath of oxygen at birth, but you are right. I checked that info too.
Now, aruing with me that a spider is an animal and not an insect because some director said so, should say something about someone's iq.
But, enough about Needled*ck - he should've been a soiled kleenex that ended in the toilet.
Burton CAN be a GOOD director given the RIGHT project. He's not the type to handle Superman. I think I made my point before - that he wouldn't handle Toy Story but could make one hell of a Frankenstein remake.

First, TrigAss, maybe you lighten up a little, huh, f*ckface? I reread your post. The sarcasm, as I detected it, still reads like it refers to "Returns" and "Ed Wood" being some of his lesser work. Don't f*cking go off on me for having the same opinion as you and stating it in plain English because sarcasm doesn't translate the same in text.
Now, c*ckPit, even though you posses an amazing skill with anagrams (did you notice my f*cking sarcasm there, Trig?), is it that hard for you to understand what a quote is? I'll go slow for you - Jon Peters . . . the producer of all the Batman movies . . . and Superman Lives . . . said to Kevin Smith . . . "Spiders are the fiercest killers in the animal kingdom" . . . I didn't say it . . . I was quoting him . . . That's why there's those funny little marks before and after the statement . . . they're called "quote marks" . . . OOPS, there they are again.
I know what the f*ck spiders are you stupid little twat. Are you still gonna argue that Tim Burton was not involved with "Batman Forever? (or as you call it, Batman 3 - wait, have you even seen the movie? Are you one of those people that thinks "Batman Begins" was a prequel and Heath Ledger is the younger version of Jack Nicholson's character?)
Lastly, what the hell does this mean: (watch out, quotes again!) "...in fact...don't call me, I'll call you...NOT." What the f*ck is that? Are you a 12 year old girl, if so, that's fine, it makes perfect sense. Is that supposed to be some kind of dis? "Not"? Really? The more I think about that, the funnier it gets. What is this, "Wayne's World"? (uh-oh, sorry I didn't warn you about the quotation marks that time. I'll explain to you next time how to use them when writing about movies and trademarks and such.)

If the costume looked that damn shiny, and if his hair looked that crazy, I would have bought a ticket in an instant just to watch what a trainwreck it would have been. Plus, looking at the "photo", you should be able to tell that Cage wasn't THAT skinny in the late 90's, coming off The Rock and such, he was much bulkier than what the "photo" seems to suggest. Pretty funny, though. Oh, judging by the concept art, it becomes clear that Burton was not the right man for the job, I mean, one of his sketches has Supes looking like a slightly tougher Edward Scissorhands. I would have been fine with Cage as Supes, minus the faux Fabio locks.

Spiders are NOT insects... they are part of the arachnid family. 32,000 different species of Spiders (or was it 24,000?), if memory serves (which clearly... it isn't!).

Just a bit 'o trivia.

But you're quite right. They are as different from insects as a healthy, loving, attractive balanced woman is from The Lohan.

Val Kilmer was his favorite but he never got to see Nolan's film, he died shortly after watching Batman and Robin LOL! I just lost respect for Tim Burton, there mere idea of casting Nicholas Cage in anything is enough to make me vomit. Let alone SUPERMAN! That suit looks f*cking ridiculous.

I hope that's fake though. Seriously that costume screams Village Halloween Parade. If anyone's from NY they'll get that reference.

That was...terrible.

The domain www.timburton.jp was created just a few months ago on 2005/07/09. The registrant is 'Team THRC', whoever that is, and the domain is a 'value' domain, which means it's a cheap ass domain. It even says so on the website that it's not an official Tim Burton website.

http://www.whois.net/whois/timburton.jp

Now, if this is real test footage, wtf would it have 'timburton.jp stamped on it? It wouldn't. It's most definitely a blatant fake. So is the material in the footage real? Well, some of the sketches look real enough for rough draft concept drawings, but that's beside the point.

The issue is whether the Nic Cage shot is real. Well, to me it looks fake. Why does Cage have a Frankenstein cut around his neck? It looks like someone took a below-neck image of a Superman high gloss toy, composited it on top of a photo of Nicolas Cage. If so, it's a very, very poor job.

The reason I say this is because of Cage's hair. It looks like it's naturally blended into the gray backdrop. Hair is notoriously difficult to copy from a photo, even with some of the best masking tools.

So I'd say the head and the gray background are part of the same image. Someone then pasted on top of the cage photo a toy shot. Toys and other manufactured objects have smooth contours and sharp relief edges, so you can mask them in with better results.

Here's a more believable photo of Cage as Superman:

"Back in 1998, Tim Burton was set to direct and Nicolas Cage was set to star in "Superman Lives"

1998? Over seven years later, the timburton.jp page gets made. lol. Ok. And if you do a search on Google Images for either "Superman Lives" or "Nicolas Cage Superman", the image in question does not pop up anywhere that I can find. And, anyone notice that Nic Cage, in that silly image, looks older than he did in 1998?

Mindless boredom? Wishful thinking? Someone hoping to see a long-haired Nic Cage wearing a tight plastic costume?

Well, it looks like this thread is dead.

Anyway. I think this photo could be be the real deal. According to Sylvain Despretz, Cage attended a costume fitting for the film. I can't find a record of the interview on Superherohype.

Well, if it IS real, it looks like sh*t. The costume looks like a plastic toy, and doesn't resemble the concept art for Superman Lives.

And none of the concept art has a long haired Superman, despite the fact the film was to be based around the Death/Return of Superman, wherein Supes returns with long hair.

The picture of Cage in the suit, it looks like his head was superimposed on an action figure!

That is truly scary!!! He looks like Gene Simmons In drag! I don't even think Tim can work a miracle on this one. Nicholas Cage just needs to hang it up. He can't really act anymore (or could he ever-I am not sure) anyways his attitude is just lousy and it comes across on film. But that is just a truly scary picture!!! I wonder if he'll put the wig on display in his home with all the others for guests to see. (Man, personally I think that is creepy!!)
Armpit writes:

It's not because the image was superimposed or they used an action figure that it means it's fake. Studios will start with strands at first - from the feedback I had at the time - there's no reason to believe that this is a legit embryonic idea of a "maybe Superman Lives" concepts. These things evolve - if any of you have the Superman dvd special edition - some of the concepts in there were pretty wild at first.
Needled*ck - relax - uh? Burton didn't direct Batman, and spiders are widely claimed as insects. So don't really see spiders at the farm much... It's like whales - they are not fish - they are mammals. I'm actually suprised that you didn't post 17 links to prove that a spider is an animal like a bull or a rabbit or something like that. Please, stop pushing that sh*t of yours - since you push your boyfriend's sh*t back up his ass anyways. And I'm going to try not to cry about your changing my name from armpit to c*ckpit - bwahahahahahahaa!!! I'm so angry - armpit is my real name - you messed it all up...
Now - can we get back at the Superman Lives thingie?

@ PrevalentMind - Those "Evening's with Kevin Smith" films are f*cking comedic GOLD. The Bruce Willis story had me in f*cking stitches, but the anal fissure story had me constantly thinking to myself "Why am i still so f*cking intrigued about Kevin Smith having a torn *sshole" hahaha.

But seriously kids, the only thing missing from the soulless concepts of this "once upon a time of a movie in development" is Superman having scissors for f*cking hands ... CHYEAH RIGHT!?

PS. To Australian Kevin Smith Fan's, we need to create a petition to get ol Kevin to hurry the f*ck up and do the 4th Round of "Evening with KS", NOW!

No, KindBicMac - nobody reads any posts here. Take me for example, I put my posts up and only show up to read them... ;-)

Yes, I read all the posts actually. If I haven,t said it - but I know I did - the fact that this is a montage could also indicate that this was only a primitive layout to to illustrate the "maybe" project at the time. Being a Supes fan, I clearly remember Nic Cage attached to Superman at one point. I would have to "revisit" the script - but I really remember that a lot of those pics had leaked out somehow.
