"Love Happens" Being Sued for $100 Million

"Love Happens" Being Sued for $100 MillionSubmit Comment
Universal Pictures' romantic comedy "Love Happens," starring Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart, faces being pulled from theaters because screenwriters Greg Crowder and Tony Freitas have filed a lawsuit against NBC Universal.

The pair claim that they showed a script titled "The Truth" to Universal back in 2006. They met with the vice president of production several times to discuss a deal, but nothing was finalized despite the studio's interest.

The writers then tried to sell their script to another studio earlier this year, but were told that they had stolen the idea from Aniston's latest movie. This is when they found out that Universal pushed forward with their proposed film without their involvement.

Crowder and Freitas have asked for the release of "Love Happens" to be stopped from its planned opening today or $100 million in profits.

why sue a film that won't crack 20 mil in its entire run?

Getting 100 million from a film such as 'Love Happens' is like trying to get blood from a f*cking turnip.

The arrogance of those idiots to blackmail the studio into handing over vastly more than they would've been paid upfront for ther script, and on a film that everyone knows and expects to not make sh*t. Who the f*ck do they think they are? Extortionists, and I don't care if the CEO of Universal crawled into these two idiots little love nest and stole the script out from under their dog-eared copies of Cosmo.

@ Minkowski, where's your Hollywood savvy? If you want $20 million you start with $100 million and then settle out of court. I hope their lawsuit succeeds, studios are in the habit of getting away with whatever they want.

You can't sue for more than you were going to make. What, are they demanding compensation for pain and suffering? Then what the hell is the audience's compensation? "Love Happens" won't even get you laid.

"If you want $20 million you start with $100 million and then settle out of court."

Then why are they giving the studio an impossible ultimatum? Just say, hey, here's a reasonable demand, we want what we would've been paid, plus twent percent, or we will sue you and pursue an injunction against the film's release.

The way these dipsh*ts are playing it, they're almost begging for a potentially protracted lawsuit, unless they work out a deal later, which is what they should be doing to begin with!

It's one thing to start with a high demand and negotiate down, it's another to say: gimme your first born son or die. And then they have to wonder how, if they manage to delay the film's release, with all the marketing already rolling, will they make as much money later as they could've made NOW.

These guys are f*cking idiots. But coming from two guys that haven't written d*ck, and probably know more about midget porn than high-dollar negotiations, that doesn't surprise me.

"studios are in the habit of getting away with whatever they want."

True, but they're also habitually eating sh*t on films that bomb like Hiroshima. So it's a draw.

maybe it includes money spent on making the movie... how much was the budget?
minkowski writes:

Not much, but most of that probably went to paying Aniston and Eckhart. What a waste, huh? I'd rather see them pay for another Reeves/Bullock 'Lake House'.

It wouldn't make sense to sue for the entire production budget, and I doubt Love happens cost more than twice the budget of Resident Evil 3.

Screenwriters typically get paid a flat fee. Or, at most, a percentage of the gross. 100 million is vastly beyond both.

Ironic alternate title for this film;

'sh*t Happens'.

Well, today was opening day, so they didn't halt the film obviously.

This news is probably from six months ago. WP is always a little slow on the delivery of it's third hand stories. Takes a while for the news to filter down from AICN and JoBlo.

Who knows. This law suit can even be a publicity stunt for a movie that most people wouldn't even notice otherwise. Who gives a sh*t about a law suit on a romance/comedy? Honestly.

why would anyone want to take credit for this movie anyway? The real screenwriters should sue the studio for giving them the credit.

^ what he said

Why is Hollywood still giving Aniston money to make movies? I can't remember the last one that made loads of money.

This movie is going to suck *ssholes and make a TON of money. These guys are right! Mink, if someone stole what you did, after telling you they were not interested, you would try to be fair with them? No way! They need to know they cant walk all over people. I think that if this is indeed true they should be punished for being douchbags!!
bluemeenie writes:

They'll have to give them some money now...They thought they could walk over them. Lawyers are starving these days- they'll pick up on this.
