What's Going On with "Judge Dredd" Remake?

Back in January, it was reported that Rebellion and 2000 AD were in development on a new "Judge Dredd" movie, based on the 2000 AD comics and not the 1995 Sylvester Stallone film.

Now eight months later, Jock, an artist who has worked on the "Dredd" comics, has posted a message on his Twitter account with an update on the feature film. "Working through script visuals for Judge Dredd movie. Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) writes a great script," he said.

Judge Dredd is a comics character whose strip in the British science fiction anthology 2000 AD is the magazine's longest running. Dredd is a law enforcement officer in a violent city of the future where uniformed Judges combine the powers of police, judge, jury and executioner. He and his fellow Judges are empowered to arrest, sentence and even execute criminals on the spot.

Check out Jock's "Judge Dredd" concept art below.

This could be good. The first Dredd movie was kind of a joke, so was the first Punisher movie.. then Marvel Knight got to work with the sequel, and i turned out to be a good film..

excellent news. they wrecked everything with the Stallone version. Back it up and do it right. Bloody dark comedy.

This has potential to be excellent movie!!!

I dont know if it should be a comedy but it should be darker. The Stallone version was kind of campy. This should be dark, gritty, and nasty. The judge should be malignant natured and not some bio-enginered ass clown. It could be done very well if written right!

I've been a fan of the strip for a long time and was severely disappointed in the film. I have hopes that if done right, this would be more than a make up for that used toilet paper of a film.
And yes there should definitely NOT be any comedy or camp to this one at all.

are they gonna keep the 3 seashells?

This movie could be good if done like the comic, dark and exciting. I doubt it though. The only hope for this film is Alex Garland who is an amazing writer. Now just to get a director that will not ruin everything

Alex Garland, cool!

There has to be a bit of comedy. Fudge Dredd comics were always funny, always a little tongue-in-cheek. But it has to be rated R to work.

Ahhh, I'm pretty sure the concept art for the first film looked exactly the same and yet the film still looked ridiculous. The uniform is just too big a bulky to look serious on film. Change the uniform, lose Rob Schneider(or any comic relief), get Bale(could be cool with his true Brit accent) or Clive Owen(kinda looks like Dredd from the nose down and his voice might fit the part better than anyone) to star, and make it violent as sh*t. The first film was a joke. There's no need to dumb it down to try to make a buck again.

Thank God we haven't heard any 3D bullsh*t surrounding this film yet.

Im with Sac... haha.. Sac..
Honestly though.. ultra violent and f*cking super future...y.

Owens a good choice but hes always been kind of p*ssy... Bales would be great so long as he didn't whisper the whole way through...
triggax writes:

Bales = Bale... You get it.
rabid writes:

for one thing, Dredd should never ever EVER take his helmet off... but this being Hollywood, they'll always want to give their lead face time.
The first version was just made in the wrong time period. Now is the time for something more violent.

Am I the Only guy that thinks Judge Dredd and Demolition Man were like the BEST-worst movies in the history of classic action films... they just don't make them like that anymore!!! I must have seen Judge Dredd like at least 20 times (and I always have to watch Demolition Man like right afterward or beforehand). "I knew you'd say that."
Ranger writes:

Hey... don't leave out Starship Troopers then.
SACdaddy writes:

@halostingray: GIJoe was pretty close to Judge Dredd and Demolition Man bad. I saw it twice(please don't kick me off the website) and will probably watch it every time it comes on TV like I have JD and DM. What is it about these sh*tty movies(yeah Ranger, Starship Troopers included) that is so f*cking attractive? They're all terrible, but I love them!
