Kevin Smith's "Red State" Could Still HappenPosted: September 8th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
It was assumed that Kevin Smith's "Red State" horror movie has been dead for awhile, since he has been planning it even before "Zack and Miri Make a Porno." Smith now revealed to Sci-Fi Wire that the movie could still happen.
"I had a conversation with Jon Gordon, the producer on it, a dude who was our guy for years and years at Miramax," said Smith. "The other day Jon was over, and he's like, 'What have you been telling people about Red State?' And I was like, 'That we don't have any money, that we can't find the money.' He's like, 'Why are you telling people that? That's not true.' I said, 'I don't see any Red State money. If I don't see it, if I've never heard of it, then how do I think that it exists?'"
It turns out that Gordon has raised enough money but wants to secure casting before making any announcements. Smith wants the opposite, he wants to see the money before he begins the casting process.
"Long story short, hopefully the money turns up very soon and we go," Smith continued. "Failing that, I'm going to pursue my hockey movie next."
"Red State" is based on Fred Phelps, the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, which became infamous for taking a supremely homophobic stance and for picketing the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq.

How exactly is that the synopsis for a horror movie? I read an interview with Smith last October in which he discussed this project and the details, as I recall, were vastly different from this (i.e., he described the premise of an actual horror movie).

Same thing as far as WP is concerned. We're lucky they didn't say that "Fred Phelps (father of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps) is rumored to star in the movie."

Cool.
I sent 17 pizza's to the westboro baptist church, I told them to write "God hates fags, but loves a good pizza!"

I bet if he plays it as a comedy- these dead soldiers come back as gay zombies- and instead of eating brains- they want to eat something else of phelps...That's the way Kevin thinks...
