The film looks like a mix of live-action with PS3/360 graphics. Don't get me wrong the movie still looks interesting but it's not as groundbreaking as people make it out to be.
PrevalentMind writes:

Yes very impressed. We knew this was going to be a blend of live action and CGI from the get go...no one said it was going for insane high quality realism so I dont understand the bitching already. It's a 3D movie for christ's sake Zemeckis does Beowulf and people love it- yet when Cameron does the same thing while incorporating live action haters lose their sh*t?!?

Daf*ck guys? Daf*ck?
PrevalentMind writes:

Just wait for the exectution...I mean the first shot with Worthington getting out of the ship in the wheelchair is FULL CGI...Everything but Worthington's face is CGI...

It's CGI with live action- chill out.

Maybe it'll be a little more "groundbreaking" on the big screen than on my computer screen. Still have faith!

The TECHNOLOGY created to produce it was the groundbreaking part...

CGI will always look like CGI. Cameron's trying to show us how to tell a story with it instead of treating it as a gimmicky effect we've come to loathe in mainstream films.

"It's a 3D movie for christ's sake Zemeckis does Beowulf and people love it- yet when Cameron does the same thing while incorporating live action haters lose their sh*t?!?"

Actually it's the other way round. We were promised to go to another world by Cameron. I could make better cgi with my rendering software. He lied, this movie looks even more shallow than I once thought.

Terrible,300 million to make that? ripped off.serves him right for blowing his own trumpet.
SpookyCupcakes writes:

Oh AND not to mention the insanely large budget, and this is the outcome.

You shouldn't be so submissive, PM, that kind of mindset is what sheep have on the way to the slaughterhouse.

Well, nobody is going to SEE the technology while they're watching the movie, are they? The camera they're using isn't that f*cking special, nobody is gonna say "HAI THAT SEEMS MOAR REEL TO ME" if they have real d glasses on, will they?
PrevalentMind writes:

haha Whatever cupcake...

You guys thought this was going to be live action?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Sucks to be you right now. And WHAT would classify as 'another world' for you...

lol Hold on, I'll get Cameron and Nasa on the phone. They have a ship to Jupiter with your name on it. hahahahaha Foolish...
SeWerin writes:

Seriously, this plot reminds me a lot of that of Pocahontas.

Anyone else thinks the same?

Never thought that Cameron would write such a cliche :/

"lol Hold on, I'll get Cameron and Nasa on the phone. They have a ship to Jupiter with your name on it. hahahahaha Foolish..."

We know that the planet will obviously have to be cgi, but we're pointing out that for 300 million, they could have done a LOT better than the outcome.

SpookyCupcakes writes:

isn't this also WETA digital? You know, the same company who made the same level of cgi for 'district 9'? You all remember 'District 9', right? The movie that had a budget of 30 million? Yea, that movie.
PrevalentMind writes:

"We've already come to terms with the fact you're a troll on this so don't expect us to try to change your mind."

I don't need you guys to change my mind, I was teetering on "well, maybe this isn't so bad, I mean I realize I've been giving it blind hate lately, maybe the trailer will be good" and then WHACK! Nope, it showed me everything that I thought was gonna be sh*t about this movie, and then some.

"One sentence and flashes of cuts over the span of 2 minutes is NOT the final product."

Don't give me that bullsh*t, Snyder didn't put a shot of Crudup in his LED suit in the watchmen trailer, did he? no, because that would be irresponsible to not be done rendering at so close a release date. That, what you just saw, IS the final product, and you know what? It sucked.
PrevalentMind writes:
on August 20th, 2009 at 3:07:49 PM

District 9 wasnt full CGI...it was live action filmed with affordable HDV cams that included CGI characters. It had no actors with high price tags, and it was directed by a man who does CGI by himself for the most part.

D9 was awesome but it wasnt a massive scale CGI movie. I compare this to Beowulf- and doing so you can see the new technology has brought this forward. If you dont thats your loss.
PrevalentMind writes:

SpookyCupcakes writes:

"Oh yeah...YOU."

Yea, because I actually give a sh*t if a movie looks like it's budget, and once again, like Spiderman 3 (250 million) and G.I. Joke (175 million), it doesn't, and the story sounds just as shallow and cliche ridden as the storylines of the two previously mentioned movies.

No, I can't see the camera while I'm watching avatar, unless there is a goof in the film!

And I do not give any sh*t about what technology this has produced, a movie should be based on the movie itself, and not the camera or other technology that was used to make the movie!

Horrible. Not impressed. And yeah I won't even waste my time watching it for free at a friends house. f*ck I hate James Cameron. All his films with the exception of Aliens suck. All he does is dump his budget in effects and totally cast out everything else. T2 had the worst acting and soundtrack of any film.

I think anyone questioning the CGI needs to go to Apple's website and watch the trailer in HD. What I saw was pretty damn amazing and lightyears beyond what we saw in Beowulf.

"I like how people are basing the whole movie on this short teaser."

I'm bashing the effects, the uncreativity, and the ridiculously high budget for the piece of sh*t, but not the movie itself, I'm gonna bash the movie when I see the illegal cam.

"Seriously, it's either you think it looks interesting or not. That's about all you can say at this point."

No it's not, you can talk about the sh*tty average effects, or the terribly unimaginitive aliens, or how useless it is to have Worthington all cgi'd in a wheelchair for no reason, or talk about the sh*tty, tiring, cliche, and boring storyline.
SpookyCupcakes writes:

I already have, 3 times to be exact, and it still looks like a video game. Am I supposed to watch it 4 times before the CGI magically changes and gets to all of a sudden become worth it's budget?
DoucheNozzle writes:

Photoreal my ass, Cameron. I'll give this trailer one thing, the music. You can always count on James Horner to create a majestic score. On the other hand, seriously, the Prawns of D9 looked way more real than the cartoony blue creatures here. I wouldn't care so much if Cameron had kept his mouth shut and not said that this film was going to change cinema, that the avatars would look photoreal, no, Cameron, they don't. I honestly don't see why Cameron wanted to make the entire planet CGI. It looks like a slightly more tropical version of Earth. Did he forget that you can shoot on a location and if you have to, add things in later. Maybe with the money he would have saved, he could try and make the avatars look more real and less like Jar Jar Binks painted blue. I'm with SpookyCupcakes on this one, Cameron let his ego get the best of him by bragging that this film would "change the game" when the final product looks like Cameron spent the 300 million on craft services. What a shame. What is most hilarious is that the story is basically Dances With Wolves In Space.

Don't even start with that bullsh*t.

This movie has been in production for 4 years. Pre production for 10, and alltogether James started working on this 12 years ago.

If the CGI isn't finished yet, then that means that yea the CGI might be good in the final product, but it just shows how incompetent a director James Cameron would be.

"so stop spewing your garbage when it comes to JC."

I don't care if he directed Aliens, or T2, or True Lies, or even T1. I'm judging him, not as a director, but as a director of avatar. And if he's being incompetent or lying through his teeth, I'm not gonna be quiet and say "well, he directed a lot of good sci fi so I guess I can't say anything bad about him..." f*ck that, I'm gonna call him out on his bullsh*t, while people like PM and Vega eat up said bullsh*t.

I could care less about the CGI in this film. Really, big f*cking deal if I spent a lot of money I could make CGI look fun and important too. What i'm interested in is the 3D Tech developed for the film. From what I hear thats the real kicker.

Let me make this clear: I have high hopes for this movie, and tomorrow I'll be watching the 15 minutes preview at a press screening in my country.

I believe is too early to judge the movie, and that some haters are way too exaggerated, and often their intention is to bully people who have faith in the movie, and most of the times they win. I don't mind, it's just their opinion, I have my own and that's all I care.

Still I believe they are kind of right, because the teaser trailer showed a lot of scenes, and at the same time, most of those scenes showed a lot. I mean... A LOT! For the first teaser they should've stay with some real characters moments and some landscapes (like the first seconds), and some close-ups of the aliens: their faces, eyes, mouth movements. That's all, no action.

That would've been a great teaser, right?! To show the groundbreaking technology in these characters they promised us. I didn't have issues with the aliens, I had issues with aliens riding in winged creatures, surrounded with endless forests and battles with thousands of humans.

That looked like The Phanthom Menace + The Matrix Revolutions + Delgo = Dances with Wolves in Space, but I don't mind that the story isn't original. Same thing happened with "The Abyss" and "Titanic", and they were great movies.

So everybody who say is too early to judge movie are right. Everybody who say the CGI is great are right (but I think it will look fantastic in a few months and in the theaters) and everybody who say that it's nothing new and that they've seen it before are right too. At least, now.

Anyway, maybe tomorrow i'll have another opinion. This one is mine now.

Once again, to all of those who have missed it:

The movie isn't about the "SUPER f*ckING COOL" technology that was used to make this movie, therefore rendering the whole "technology" argument moot. Instead, this movie takes place on generic future dystopian earth #83 with space marines trying to kill aliens and some faggot in a wheelchair got his mind downloaded into an alien that the humans want to kill.

On top of that, the aliens have teeth like humans, and they scrapped the bendy fingers thing, which is the only thing this movie had going for it.

The effects look like sh*t (compared to budget), the story is cliche ridden, and Cameron is suffering from Zemeckis syndrome.

Alright everyone, yeah it may not look perfect here, but didn't Cameron say he edited 8 trailers? and wasn't that months ago? For all we know the effects could be outdated in this trailer And also, most films that use cgi, the trailer makes the cgi look like crap. Cloverfield for example. The statue of Liberty, the head. In the trailer looked way fake but as I recall when I saw the film, I thought it was real. Chill out. Wait for December before you judge the cgi. A trailer is only supposed to give a glimpse, not show everything, in this case I think it did a very good job. Bitch about the cgi when you actually see the final film.
GIJOE was a cock garage writes:

Had EA sports not handled the effects, and the aliens been something other than smurf Legolas, this probably would be an amazing movie. However it seems that he took some short cuts, or just homogenized a huge idea too much to fit into the family Christmas fun zone. If his reasoning was that no one is 10 feet tall so they had to be CGI, then the first Alien movie would have never been made. Peter Jackson just had them all kneel down to be short(hobbits), so that um, kind of worked out for him (millions).

That was one instance of CGI on a reletively cgi unfriendly budget, it only got better after the trailer was well recieved and paramount threw some more money at matt reeves.

Well you know it is isn't complete yet. This trailer was probably edited weeks ago and since trailer s are supposed to be just a preview, the size of the file isn't going to be extremely large, so they aren't gonna load it with the best version of the effects. Another example, Transformers 2. As sh*tty as that movie was, the effects were stunning. The trailer I don't remember had very stunning effects. I have no doubt that Avatar will do the same. Give it a rest, like I said before, don't judge a two minute trailer, judge the final fil. That's what really matters.

I thought it looked worse in HD, simply highlighted the segments that weren't pure CGI as looked that much better. I also don't understand how this movie can be 60% CGI and cost 300 million dollars. By the same train of thought Final Fantasy Advent Children should have cost 500 million dollars, and Beowulf should have been funded by the U.N. As far as "photorealism" goes, the fact you can easily tell which elements are CGI is by definition, not photo realistic. Hollywood's growing obsession with rendering everything they can is really starting to cheapen the whole movie experience. Films like District 9 pull it off wonderfully, where as this appears to simply be as big as possible and forgets smaller details. The setting/scenery looks great, but again it looks fake, there's no reason 90% of what is CGI in that trailer couldn't have been shot in real life. The success of this movie (if its overwhelming) is going to really start to sh*t on films that want to film expansive effects shots in real life rather than rendering. A good example of a film (not a great one) is the first Underworld, the fact the werewolves/Lycans were real added a huge element to the movie, and really became more believable (as far as vampire werewolf movies go). Had this movie been 90% real 10% CGI, it really would have raised the bar in Action movies and really ignited a Sci-fi craze in Hollywood, which does already seem to be happening. Instead, it just seems like its going to do good its opening weekend, and not really change anything with the way movies are addressed. Granted the 3-D experience is a separate element from this film itself. Cameron could have invented some sort of God's gift to 3D, but that doesn't really do anything to help me think those aliens aren't just some dude spending time with a shader for a while.

Booze my friend. Aliens is a good film, and I got a bit drunk.

To everyone else: Instead of calling me a troll or a loser (which I am proudly both), why don't you try to tell my why I'm wrong instead of calling me names like the irrational little pricks that you're being?

I'm not going to read all of these posts. If you were lucky enough to see the half hour of footage at Comic Con San Diego, you know what this film looks like. It IS actually very convincing and you are transported to another world. It's very much an homage to scifi in the 50s and 60s...not film, but novels. Cameron said one of his biggest influences was Heinlein. The point is, ALL cgi looks better in context and terrible in little snippets. When you see the detail that went into each character (even down to wrinkles in the feet and chipped toenails, for example), you'll start to get it. Wait until you can see it in context guys. Oh, and who are you all kidding...you're going to go see this. I mean...seriously.

How the f*ck do you leave out photo realistic CGI from a trailer for a movie that's SOLE CLAIM TO FAME IS ITS PHOTO REALISTIC CGI. That'd be like the Transformers previews just having stick figures and Micheal Bay saying "oh well I left out the robots duh".
GIJOE was a cock garage writes:
on August 20th, 2009 at 7:43:13 PM

Some of the excuses are kind of shocking. Take a poorly photo shopped image. Shrink it down nice and small. Surprise! It looks more realistic since you have trouble discerning what had been altered. Now make the image really big. Oh no! Now you can see all those crappy alterations. CGI works the same way.

By definition, yes they do. I dare anyone to link one trailer from any movie that was released with unfinished special effects scenes. Try real hard to find a movie that was an effects driven movie that did this. The only memory of ANYTHING like that being released was the Iron Man teaser that Favreau said "This isn't finished, but it looks cool". It also wasn't a trailer.

You mean the teaser? Oh so they weren't shots were things were missing? Which is what you are saying they did. They simply released the footage and thought "oh hey lets remove that photo realistic element because thats something people really do". You honestly believe that? Really? Then I saw the trailer. Then it sunk in. Now I'm just shell shocked that this was hyped and labeled the way it was. I'm more stoked for Zombieland 10:1 than this. I assume I'll rent the game, play that, and if the trailers at that point don't look any better, whats the point of seeing the movie if it just looks the same as the game?

Also, do you think they have an unlimited amount of time between now and the release date to "finish the movie" finalize the master, finish all the sound, languages, then print and distribute the reels? This movie is complete, it's done, it is what it is. Anything at this point is going to be band aids on bullet wounds. I pray you are all right, I would be ECSTATIC if a trailer comes out in a month and its honest to god real as it gets. I would be camping out at that point. But that's just not going to happen. Oh, yea, the opinion thing, well, I guess everyone has an opinion, and everyones opinion is equal!

Oh, wait, sorry, I just had a small surge of retarded go through me, not all opinions are equal, I've already said this (albeit in a different article). It looks interesting. I do think it was far too over hyped and was never going to live up to expectations of some people. James Cameron has made a few films I have really enjoyed so Ill give him a chance.

I think ill watch it with the missus when it's released as its a nice escape from a cold winters night in December!

P.S Please don't quote me :D

@Spooky: I, like a lot of people on this site, see almost everything (within heterosexual limits) that comes out. If you read any of my posts before it came out, there should be no doubt about how sh*tty I expected it to be. I was just impressed with how much it exceded my worst expectations. For that reason I've grown to love it. Then again you already knew that.

I'll probably stop making obscene diggers on this movie for one fact. Cameron is a man with a vision. He is able to tackle movies with a huge scope and (typically) execute that vision. He is also going to make what will become my favorite movie of all time, True Lies 2. That said, he probably makes more in a week then I will see in my intire life, and I accept and respect that. What I don't respect is him saying this movie was going to wipe his ass with my brain. Based on the trailer it simply can't. I'm sure it'll be entertaining to an extent. Whether or not it's GI Joe entertainment (teeth pulling) or the new Star Trek (d*ck pulling) is yet to be seen. I would love nothing more than to sit down and watch a 300 million dollar sci-fi opus that sh*ts down the throats of anything before it. I would happily give 10 dollars to see that. It just doesn't seem like that's going to happen. However this movie could do the same thing Star Trek did. Run an insanely terrible trailer (the tv ones blaring Disturbed saying not your dad's star trek) and then release the third trailer (if you are a fan you know which one this was) and literally create one of best trailers of all time, and somehow pack dudes with popper collars and flip flops into a sci-fi movie. Am I interested in seeing another trailer? More than anything. Do expect it to change my opinion? Not so much.
SACdaddy writes:

Spooky Cupcakes: Oh, wait, sorry, I just had a small surge of retarded go through me, not all opinions are equal, I've already said this (albeit in a different article). If your car breaks down and your mom thinks it's the axels, but the mechanic says it's most likely the engine, who are you going to believe? Sure you love your mom, but the expertise and degrees and years of school the mechanic has under his belt should tell you that he probably knows what the f*ck he's talking about.

Same here, just because someone thinks "HAY THIS MOVIE LOOKS SO GUD PHOTORELISTIC!!!" and I say "no, it doesn't, for this, this, and this reason" and the original poster retorts with "U R A 17 YR OLD GURL WHO GETS RAEPD" then who's opinion matters more?

That example doesn't apply here cause in that case they are arguing over something that can be factually proven as where this is an argument of tastes. I don't give a f*ck if a Chef tells me something tastes good if I chew on it and I think its disgusting we will have to agree to disagree. That's my opinion its my choice. Now you might say he knows more about food sure but he ain't me and he's not gonna convince me that it tastes any better than my taste buds are saying it does.

Another issue with that example is that you're just another guy on these forums. You aren't a director, editor, writer, CGI artist or anything like that. You are just another movie goer like the rest of us which means your opinion means just as much or just as little as ours.

Lastly, I said I wasn't responding to you but since you responded to me in a nice fashion, which actually makes me think you have some logic and reasoning in your mind, I responded back. Personally I think the film looks great. I think the CGI/Live Action mix was pretty good, especially in the shot of Worthington in the wheel chair considering everything but his face (allegedly) is fake. Since it's live action mixed you don't have those wonky animations for CGI characters.

Also Cameron has claimed that the CGI/3D is only one layer. The movie could still be very good. A mistake Cameron makes is talking too much about the tech and not hyping his actual story. The story, characters, and universe could all be very good at the end of the day, but all the emphasis is on looks due to his comments so this kind of backlash at the end of the day is his fault. I'll end this by saying don't give up on the film because you're not sold on the CGI/3D aspect, because the story might actually be interesting.
Ronsauce writes:

We'll then look for a producer, then get started on primary shooting, then we'll enter it into a film festival (most likely tribeca, or toronto international), then hopefully pick up a distributor.

Once you are in the process of doing these things, then tell me that I can't make a better movie.

I can't believe the amount of hype this movie has had. It looks OK at best, not like a massive budgeted movie by one of he biggest directors out there. And what is with this growing trend of making EVERYTHING CG in movies, even that which could be easily real (and look better that way). I was psyched to see Sam Worthington in another movie, but apparently he's only in a fake wheelchair in the beginning then a skinny cartoony cat body for the rest. Guess I'll have to wait till Clash to see him back in action. Oh, The Wolfman was a much better trailer and may even be the better movie.

I have to agree about the CGI looking like a video game and the fact that the plotline sounds like Dances with Wolves in outer space. But i have faith in Sam Worthington, and a lot of James Camerons films sound bad when you summarise them into a short synopsis (Come on, "A hardass spy must confront his wife about his double life while fighting a terrorist cell") but they have always been great films.

I think this might turn up to be a pretty sweet sci-fi film, but not the Star Wars of this generation like it's hyped up to be.

Wtf, you just completely made obsolete your opinion with this stupid bullsh*t. Not only is your reasoning extremely shallow at best its pretty ignorant sounding too. Say something worth reading or f*cking shut up.

Somehow also theres this correlation between the movie being good and it having 'photorealistic' cgi. Also if someone could explain how you make something that never ever existed photorealistic in a computer while simultaneously overcoming the "blank" valley (i forget the name, its where just before photorealism is achieved theres a creepiness that is very hard to overcome in the mind of the viewer), I would listen all ears. I do think the creatures faces look a little cartoony but I don't think you could have an audience empathize with it without having a feature like exaggerrated eyes or something like that. Look at how big the eyes of the creatures in D9 were.

Also, I know I can't speak for everyone but theres f*cking alien mounted dragons battling space marines... like, god damn. Its your loss if you can't find excitement in that.

I don't get the comments about the wheelchair being unnecessarily cgi. You can barely see the wheelchair anyway, and someone said his body is cgi just his head is real. Well if that's the case f*ck me sideways, there's nothing 'cartoony' about that. (and I watched it in HD)

BlueMobius writes:

The reason the cgi in the trailer looks so cartoony is because you don't have enough time to suspend disbelief. It really comes down to that. The fact is...and I know this is going to be a shocker to a few of you...there is not such thing as a giant ten-foot-tall blue alien. Therefore, your mind is trying to explain it away. However, after watching it for minutes on end, you start to forget that it's animated and get lost in the little things that make it "realistic cgi." There area hundred and one little things that trick the eye and convince you from how they move to how their eyes track. Cameron explained that each actor had FOUR cameras trained on their eyes using the retina as a focal tracking point. They also had multiple cameras that used each individual pore on the actor's body as a tracking point. The reason that's important is that our skin movie in such a wide variety of ways that our eyes don't track each movement BUT if even one of those movements is off, our eyes know something isn't quite right. Yes, the tech. on this film is amazing. Will it work? I think so but only if you guys go in with an open mind. After all, the film is NOT about the animation, it's about the story and the story looks awesome. If you are not a scifi fan, stay away, because this is some old-school scifi Cameron is pulling.

Oh, and one more thing...from an artistic standpoint, the film is breathtaking. All of the plants and whatnot are largely inspired by Cameron's time spent deep sea diving. There is a lot of bioluminescence going on that looks awesome in 3D.

"The reason the cgi in the trailer looks so cartoony is because you don't have enough time to suspend disbelief."

"suspending disbelief" is a fancy term for "imagination". I shouldn't have to Imagine photorealistic effects, that was the animators job, to not make me suspend my disbelief.
SpookyCupcakes writes:

Also, enough with the tech. Between this and regular movie cameras there is absolutely no discernable difference, it was a waste of money and he didn't need two cameras to do the focus for him, he just needed a focus setting on a camera.

No, cameron said "LOL LOOK OUT PHOTOREAL CGI IN MAH MOVIE LOLOLOL" and that was it's main hype point, and it looks like a WoW cinematic.

Every single person who said that i'd be wrong about the trailer and that the cgi would be photorealistic is now telling me that "ITS NOT CGI THAT MAKES A GOOD MOVIE, ITS THE (cliche, boring, ripped off from halo) PLOT DUDE!!!!"

You know what was great about this trailer.....the fact that I saw the preview for "Sons Of Anarchy" Season 1 DVD.

How the hell can you have a 300 million dollar budget and have blue cat creatures that look that bad.At the start of the trailer was good until Sam got out and the horrible CGI robot was there guarding the platform.

I will watch this for free but just like G.I.Joe I will refure to pay any money to see it.This isn't mindblowing or changing what can be done CGI wise.

Also why does he feel the need to put actor's faces on CGI bodies...was Sam to lazy to sit in a wheelchair, pushing it along while in front of a green screen...Obviously yes.For all the money he spent this is a piece of crap so far.

Plus how can you say the story is great when all the trailer does is try to get you to believe that this is going to be good.Hell I'll admit it..the CGI in Titanic was better than this.

Also Spooky you can quote me on anything I have said. The people that think this is great need to have someone tell them elsewise.

Dude this is just a d*ck comment. Its pretty obvious that this animation is of the very greatest calibur, and the fact that its gonna be in 3d is pretty ridiculous. It looks like the animators put a lot of time and effort in, and you just brush it off as though its nothing because some f*cking promise was broken to you. If the direction is good (which I think it will, you think it won't) it won't matter if the animation is perfectly photorealistic. Three hours of staring at these things and we'll be able to connect with them as characters. The movie looks like it can stand on its own to me, regardless of whatever sh*t Cameron was spitting. And really, compared to spielberg and some other big directors, Camerons track record is pretty solid. His movies are always well shot, well edited and well paced.

I just still see no real reason to be negative I guess.

@Bluemobius: Nice way to break it down my friend. I really think that under all this "photorealism" anymosity lies a basic dislike for the way the creature looks. In all these years of hype I dont think I ever heard Cameron mention that the main character would be a 10" tall blue self illuminating Thundercat looking mofo! He took a big risk going this far out the box and it can make or break the film no matter how good the tech looks. I also think we're only getting one layer of these scenes watching this without the 3D Cameron developed (typical JC builds his own new 3D camera) for it. Its always hard to fully accept trailers for 3D movies (like The Final Destination) without the 3D. We may never get the full effect until you actually sit in a theater and strap on the goggles. Maybe this is one reason why JC is giving out free 15 minute screenings. I really believe that we're just scratching the surface of what this movie has to offer and if not then even JC deserves to be verbally butt f*cked for waisting $300 mill. I'll wait till after I see it to form my complete opinion. I think JC has earned that respect at least.

So, FinalFantasy, do you decide which films you will pay money for solely on their trailer? Can you say that you've never paid money for a movie that you either thought the trailer was crap or you didn't know anything about in the first place? And with your obvious immediate direct hate for the film just from said trailer, why the hell are you even commenting, to purely try to stop others from seeing it? Coz thats just sad.

And as for spooky, I can understand your 'pessimism' toward the film now that the trailer has proven the CGI (or whatever you've been promised by our friend James here) isn't up to expectations, however even yourself has admitted that it is possible that in the time frame given from when this trailer was created to when the film is released that the said effects have been improved (to what we have been promised). And yes you've already said that this should be the final look given that they've had 4 or however many years, but we don't know for sure. SO, I think maybe you should quieten down just slightly incase you have to eat your words come christmas.

? The thing about his new system that was so impressive was that he could see all the rendered visual effects while he was shooting. Instead of shooting a scene and having to wait to go to post and do visual work he saw it in real time. Then they have some improved 3D stuff but the real time CGI thing was what people were going ape sh*t over, things we are never going to see really.

Also principle photography started in 2007 and the film was pushed back cause they needed more post time. I'd reckon it'd look better by release but not miles better. This is what it's gonna look like pretty much and I'm fine with that.

I missed out on all the "Photo Realistic" stuff, I heard it out of TIME Magazine but not Cameron so I don't really care, I wasn't expecting that. Knowing CGI, we won't reach full blown photo-realism for a couple more years (at least that's when it should be possible). I was more impressed by the character design, the creatures, and the twist put on a rather old storyline (Pocahontas).

First thing- they're slapping up the 300mill price tag- Cameron isnt sitting at home shaking and quivering with his hands pressed together, praying to god he makes 300 million at the box office to recoup his costs.

This film could make 10 million, totally bomb, and Cameron would still make close to a billion dollars renting out and selling the technology for the next decade. Why dont you think he's worked in ten years? The underwater camera advancements kept him rich.

The technology he created allows filmmakers to actually view CGI rendered animation while actors motion capture, so these CGI figures might as well be ON SET. You can see exactly what you're going to get instead of motion capture first and rendering later- THAT'S AMAZING.

The film's going to showcase technology that's going to make him billions. He doesn't care if the movie bombs- either does Fox, they'll all make a sh*tload either way.

The film might as well have cost 50 cents because 300 million is piddly sh*t compared to what the tech will bring in. He's not puttin all his eggs in one basket and letting it all ride on one film. He's a successful business man as well as an inventor. You event something desirable- and you get paid out the ass. Been that way since slice bread and the lightbulb.

PM, We aren't talking about the f*cking tech, we are talking about the sh*tty CGI that we were lied to about and the boring story and the dull aliens.

Nobody is going to see the technology, nobody will notice the difference, stop saying "BUT BUT BUT THE TECHNOLOGY" because that doesn't mean jack sh*t, because if it's first used in this sh*tty cartoon, then Cameron will be out of a job.

@Spooky--It's amazing to me that two minutes of what will most likely be close to a three hour film is what you're basing your whole opinion on. That cracks me up!

In answer to your question about the comment I made on the story, I am NOT basing my judgments on the trailer. I was in the panel in San Diego and was able to see a half-hour of the film. I lost myself in the world (which IS photo-realistic, btw) and connected to the characters almost immediately. When you're looking at the avatars, it's neat that you can recognize the actors playing them.

And no, Spooky, we are NOT falling back on the tech now that the CGI supposedly fell short. It's simply the fact that the technology used in this film was new. CGI is NOT new, of course. I mean, c'mon, CGI is almost thirty years old and it started as a live-action/animation combo (TRON). What IS awesome if when you see the characters walking WITH live-action and honestly can't tell they aren't there which you CAN NOT see in second long snippets.

Listen, I don't have to sell this movie and you'll see it or you won't but please don't download it for free. It's theft, for one thing, and it's a slap in the face to all the artists who worked on this film. Speaking as a stage director, I can tell you that the work that goes into making any type of story come to life is, though fun and rewarding, incredibly hard. If you don't want to pay for the product (or wait to see the DVD your friend buys), then just don't watch it. Seriously. I have no doubt this movie is going to make its money back and doesn't need your help to do it.

Spooky, it's amazing you say I "show my stupidity" by stating the fact I thought the trailer was good. Really? Is that the best you could do? If you had any basis besides your OPINION, it may make sense. You can't take your opinion against the opinion of someone else and make a concrete argument. That shows YOUR stupidity. You don't know the facts about this movie, so stop trying to convince everyone you do. Even if you did, nobody on here would really care. Take that to the bank.

Just watch the movie when it hits IMAX. The groundbreaking part lies in the combination of great storytelling and 3D. I've just got one expecttion, wich is to be blown away by the intensity of imagination and to be sucked into storytelling, believing you're a part of it. The 3D will be cutting edge. I think it's pretty exciting Cameron developed that stereoscope camera.
It'll be somethin' new. I agree with the CGI part. It's not that hyper-realistic. But the scale of rendering....mindblowing. I can't wait. Now i gotta take a dump big time!

He hasn't been the one praising it, nor has he needed to. It's the other artists who've been weighing in. I'm talking about respectable film-makers, many of whom have voiced that they would 'never' consider making their movies digitally or otherwise. Traditionalist like Ridley Scott(wtf), and now even Spielberg of all people have either a film in Post or are in the planning stages of making 3D cinema.
