Fans Crash "Avatar" Website

Posted: August 17th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Fans Crash "Avatar" WebsiteSubmit Comment
20th Century Fox recently revealed that it will show an early look at 16 minutes of footage from the upcoming James Cameron-directed "Avatar" movie in more than 100 IMAX 3-D theaters around the world.

Fans would have to go to the official "Avatar" website on August 17th (today) to get free tickets that are on a first-come, first served basis.

The studio has now released a statement saying that so many people visited the site for tickets, that they actually crashed the site. Fox added that it has repaired the problem and fans can continue reserving tickets for nearby theaters.

Several people believe that the crash was part of Fox's master plan to show that there is lots of interest in the movie. After all, it's not the first time that the studio experiences an influx of visitors to one of their sites.

i feel like the hype is gonna hurt this movie in a big way. i kind of agree with you murphyslaw, i mean we havent even seen anything (unless you were at Comic Con) that is worth getting excited over for. however, hopefully Avatar Day next monday will change that. i already got 8 tickets for both showings back to back for Albany after the site was back up and running

I'm sure that fox leaked wolverine for the exact same reason, to build up unneeded hype and sympathy for a movie they knew was going to be just O.K.

jesus f*cking christ, yeah the movie looks and sounds intersting. But come the f*ck on, Free tickets for a trailer, who the f*ck do u think u are Cameron, wow. Talk about having an ego problem.. Im begining to hope this movie bombs just to have Cameron knocked off that cgi Horse he is so proud of...

whether it's reasons known or unknown.....i will have no interest at all in this movie until i see a trailer or something...cameron has to prove his worth before i credit him as if he already did so...pictures don't do it for me...as from what i've heard from people who did see some footage...they said the graphics were indeed amazing...but is the story really all that much better than terminator or the abyss or titanic?...i mean i aliens was one thing...the abyss was sweet too though cuz it was realistic even though it was fantasy...and the extended version was even better...but i just can't see avatar as a story fitting in that field...i mean i could be wrong...but let's see what happens

I had to settle for the puny IMAX screens in NYC. It's a shame what they're doing to the IMAX screens completely killing what made the experience so amazing in the first place.

James Cameron needs to just stay in his mansion and spend his Titanic money and leave us alone.

this could turn out to be like 'the abyss'...sci-fi without famous leading actor=box office letdown

Crashed server... please.

Same as the Wolverine leak... etc.

These scams of marketing have become far too predictable and obvious.

Cameron is a master at limited looks, secrecy, etc. He knows what he's doing. I won't judge on this movie (or these tactics)at all, but will see it.

"Several people believe that the crash was part of Fox's master plan to show that there is lots of interest in the movie."

So who are these 'several people'? I love the fact there's no names or sources, or even links, just a mention of 'several people'. Well several people also say that space aliens from the eighth planet of Rigel VII crashed the server to keep puny humans from seeing the film. Supposedly, Avatar depicts their world in a compromising way.

And it's NOT a trailer, it's a LARGE chunk of the movie. I mean, it's only a sci-fi film 15 years in the making. Yes, you heard me right, 15 years. It's taken FOUR years just to make. It's not a film, its a work of art, a labor of love. It's not just some commercially made sci-fi flick created to sell tickets.

People know Cameron. he only made the highest grossing film of all time. He made T2 T1 Abyss, True Lies and Titanic. And I hate Titanic, but has ANY other movie made 2 billion in ticket sales? Remotely? And then inflate that 2 billion into 2009 money. No. he's PROVED HIS WORTH over and OVER again. Like he needs to do it YET again.

And you people call me negative? f*ck. You're positive when you shouldn't be and negative when you should. Totally inverted. hating on Avatar, but I see there's a plethora of positive comments for White Chicks 2? LMFAO!

"i feel like the hype is gonna hurt this movie in a big way."

There is no hype. Like Neo's spoon, the thing you have to realize is the hype is an illusion on your mind.

Four years of production and we have the promise of a trailer, ONE crappy comic con poster and few pictures. And I mean a FEW. The HYPE is in people's heads. Why do I have to keep saying this sh*t? People know Cameron, they know the SCOPE and they know the DETAILS surrounding and comprising this film. They know Cameron loves to push his stories and his imagery. They know he's a demanding taskmaster and a perfectionist. When you see all of this, when you think about all this, and look at Cameron's track record, how long he's worked on this film, if you're a Cameron fan that is, you can only have the HIGHEST hopes. It's natural, I think. So Cameron isn't hyping anything. There is no hype but Cameron's REPUTATION, and that's what's driving this activity, activity I think you're totally misunderstanding entirely.

'Free tickets for a trailer, who the f*ck do u think u are Cameron"

You don't read well, I'll say that. It's 16 MINUTES of the film, not a TRAILER. There's something of difference between those two...

"sci-fi without famous leading actor"

Sam Worthington isn't just yet 'famous' perhaps, but that could change with Avatar. He's already growing in popularity and is getting more recognition. Already he was on the cover of a popular mag, billed as 'the greatest actor ever', or some sh*t.

"Talk about having an ego problem"

I think Cameron has damned well EARNED an 'ego problem' unlike all other directors that've made one sh*t film after another but talk like they lay the golden egg. Yeah, Paul W. Anderson, I'm talking to you, *sshole.

"Im begining to hope this movie bombs just to have Cameron knocked off that cgi Horse he is so proud of... "

CGI isn't Cameron's claim to fame. Recall he made MASSIVE replicated sets for Titanic and the rather limited CGI. He's a modelmaker and a traditional artist, not a CGI guru. He uses CGI only when he can't do something with real objects just as cheap. He's a practicing pragmatic artist of the screen.

" the crash was part of Fox's master plan to show that there is lots of interest in the movie"

Sure, I can see that, but the server crashed because it couldn't properly scale to handle the data requests. I mean, this IS FOX we're talking about, so they were probably using Microsoft's Internet Information Server and not Apache on a properly configured Linux server. I KNOW they weren't using UNIX because it shouldn't have crashed, instead the server should've timed out the request and the user would've got either a wait error or a blank screen. More than likely, this was because of IMCOMPETENCE and not a deliberate plan. I refuse to give FOX that much credit for anything. Even their incompetence is incompetent.

I think they just goofed, their server puked, and they tried to capitalize of the situation. Dumbasses. I wonder if Cameron knows the FOX he's working with today is NOT remotely the same FOX he's working with NOW?

"After all, it's not the first time that the studio experiences an influx of visitors to one of their sites"

You mean 'experienced', right? And I hope so. An influx is nothing more than a 'coming in' of visitors. So what you're telling me is that some people visited a studio's website. Corect? and You're telling me it's not the first time? Well, somebody took a dump today, and it wasn't the first time either. Aren't you surprised?

So I think the word you're looking for is 'avalanche'. A f*cking TORRENT. A fire and brimstone hurricane of whirling, screaming ticket-hungry banshees. Not just an 'influx'.

Damn Mink, that was a big ass comment. A true comment, but a big ass comment none the less.

On the subject of Cameron, the man knows what his doing, i have faith in him. But i am NOT looking forward to this movie. But that's got to be Camerons strategy. Make everyone curious or apathetic and then blow them out of the water.

"But that's got to be Camerons strategy. Make everyone curious or apathetic and then blow them out of the water."

Exactly! It's cameron style of misdirection I think.

Watch this hand do nothing while this hand over here readies for the KO.

"Misdirection. What the eyes see and the ears hear, the mind believes."

Cameron is the modern Houdini of Hype.

I guess - yeah.=)

P.S. But "Avatar's" PR company actually suck. Showing 20 minutes of movie in theaters - is madness. Like to show District 9 ending in theaters when movie didn't even came out.

P.P.S. But im gonna watch it anyway.

it's been a few years...just sayin after all that time...why would i already place hope in him that this movie, despite that i haven't seen anything yet, would be a lot better than anything this decade?....to me, i'll have to watch the movie before i start saying the man pulled through....cuz i'm not buying this pre-hype before the hype...the technology and graphics might be cool...but what i really want to see is more movies that were like the 80s...better storytelling with everything else that went with it...before cgi ruled everything else

Hopefully having to watch this on the smaller IMAX screen doesn't ruin it for me. I'm so used to the big one. Has anyone been to one of the puny IMAX theaters? Do they still arrange the seats in the same manor? At least it was free.
